What until recently seemed like a dream could become a reality that will revolutionize the world of technology and electric mobility. From Switzerland, the startup Morand is conducting tests to charge an electrified car in just 72 seconds.

It is “eTechnology“, based on a hybrid system using traditional battery technology and ultracapacitors. This new hybrid electric battery structure would be a highly influential factor in the future adoption of electric vehicles.

In addition to its efficient charging time, another attribute of eTechnology, according to Morand, is the fact that it can also offer a much longer service life than the lithium-ion batteries traditionally used in electric vehicles.

Morand’s Data

After testing a prototype of its eTechnology solution, the company reported that its battery specimen can be recharged to 80% in just 72 seconds, 98% in two minutes and fully recharged in 2.5 minutes.

It should be noted that, according to the organization, these reported charging times do not apply to the larger battery packs, over 100 kWh, used in the most demanding electric vehicles.

Morand explains that this technology is suited to small city cars, such as the Citroën Ami, which has a 5.5 kWh battery. Similarly, this resource could also be useful for drones and electric bicycles, which require fast response times thanks to fast charging.

Likewise, the Swiss startup reported that it has tested its eTechnology prototype for more than 50,000 charge cycles, ensuring that its innovation shows the potential required to retain energy for many more charge and discharge cycles than a traditional lithium-ion battery.

Another highlight of this development is that the technology employed works efficiently even in extreme temperatures, setting an exception to the rule that currently applies to conventional batteries used in electric vehicles.

About Morand

Morand was founded by former Formula 1 driver Benoît Morand, who played a crucial role in the development of the Hope Racing Oreco 01 Hybrid, the first hybrid prototype to start at the 24 Hours of Le Mans more than ten years ago.

Today, the company is pursuing the goal of applying energy technologies developed for motorsport to everyday solutions that contribute to the transition to clean energy.

Power, autonomy and charging times still represent important challenges for the rise of electric mobility, which in turn has opened the door to investment opportunities in the new business model and outstanding advances in science.

With the aim of innovating with respect to batteries and electricity storage, a group of scientists belonging to the company Influit Energy, with experience at the Illinois Institute of Technology, presented nanoelectrofuel, a flow battery system that is easily recharged and has 23% more power than conventional lithium batteries.

The innovation works by means of two chemical components that are dissolved in a liquid medium and introduced into two containers separated by a membrane that creates a flow of electric current. The difference of this new system is that the liquid works as a fuel that can be removed from the battery and replaced by a fuel that has already been charged.

Scope

According to the scientists, the system offers an energy density per volume 23% higher than lithium-ion batteries (between 350 and 550 Wh/l) and will cost half as much. But the researchers have already advanced the second generation of this platform that will provide four to five times the energy density of lithium batteries (550-750 Wh/kg) at a third of the cost.

Influit’s chief operating officer and head of research and development, Elena Timofeeva explained that the unique high energy density liquid format of NEF flow batteries allows the same fluids to be used in different devices, which means that this, charged at the charging station from renewable energy sources or from a grid, can be used to quickly refuel vehicles, or for stationary storage and other large portable applications.

For his part, Influit Energy Co-Founder and CEO, John Katsoudas, detailed that they have created a new type of flow battery that is based on a composite material they call nanofluid in which nanoparticles are active materials for the battery.

It should be noted that this innovation has attracted particular interest from organizations in the United States. For example, NASA, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) of the U.S. Department of Defense and the U.S. Air Force have requested Influit’s collaboration, approving millions of dollars to finance the research.

One of the fundamental values of sustainable mobility is its high interest in improving society’s living conditions as citizens move around major cities.

The percentage of the world’s population with a disability can also count on technological tools, in the field of electromobility, that will help make their day-to-day lives easier.

In this sense, the giant of the automotive industry, Ford, developed a charging station for electrified cars that, through a robotic innovation, allows people with special conditions to connect their car.

How does it Work?

While it is true that complex technological mechanisms have been applied for this product, the way it is used, as explained by Ford, is quite simple. The first step is to activate the FordPass application on a mobile device or in the car, which opens a cover on the charging station; subsequently, a robotic arm extends towards the car’s charging port, guided by a small camera.

Thus, drivers, without getting out of their car, can monitor the progress through the app. When charging is complete, the arm automatically returns to the charging station.

According to Ford of Europe Research Engineer Birger Fricke, the company is committed to ensuring freedom of movement and, at the moment, refueling or charging a vehicle can be a big problem for some drivers.

“The robotic charging station could be an additional convenience for some people, but absolutely essential for others. In the future, refueling technology could be a fully automated process, with drivers sending autonomous vehicles to refuel without the need for a human operator,” he argued.

Ford clarified that after undergoing laboratory tests, it began real-world testing of the new robotic charging system created by the University of Dortmund, Germany, which could be installed in accessible parking spaces, parking lots or private homes.

An efficient, safe and fast charging system are major challenges facing electromobility in its massification process. At the same time, this situation opens up a great number of opportunities for companies seeking to develop new technologies that not only contribute to sustainable mobility, but also become an attractive business model.

The elements that make up the batteries of electric vehicles are under constant study to optimize recharging processes. In this sense, an innovation was presented by the U.S. startup Enovix, which is working on a silicon anode battery design that is capable of recovering 98% of its capacity in just 10 minutes and withstand 1,000 charge and discharge cycles.

The process replaces the graphite in battery cell anodes with a 3D-molded silicon architecture. Silicon stands out as an alternative material to graphite because of its far superior energy storage potential.

During tests carried out on June 13, Enovix announced that it had succeeded in demonstrating that its battery can be recharged to 80% in just 5.2 minutes and reach 98% in less than 10 minutes.

Innovation Details

Unlike the horizontally wound structure of a conventional lithium-ion cell, the 3D architecture allows for a reduction in the stainless steel required to apply pressure to the packaging and maintain the connection of the silicon particles. The result is a significant increase in energy density and battery life.

Enovix has also worked on the packaging process. The standard production procedure for lithium-ion batteries is replaced by an electrode winding method using patented laser design tools, which increases the speed of cell stacking and increases the capacity of the production line by 30%.

For Enovix Co-Founder, CEO and President Harrold Rust, fast charging can accelerate the mass adoption of electric vehicles. He asserts that as electric vehicle manufacturers seek batteries with longer ranges, the public and private sectors are working to increase access to a widespread and reliable fast charging network.

“We are proud to support these goals to help electrify the automotive industry and demonstrate that our batteries are an exciting option for powering long-range, fast-charging electric vehicles,” added Rust.

It is no secret to anyone that the comfort that a rider can experience is extremely necessary to be able to perform at their best on each race, on each curve and in each overtaking that he or she is about to make. In addition to having the necessary talent to be behind the wheel, this factor is essential to withstand the demands of the competition.

For this reason, Bercella and Formula Seven have teamed up to develop an optimal and exclusive seat for the cars that make life in Formula SAE, which will have natural and environmentally friendly materials in almost all its parts, resulting in a perfect combination between comfort for the protagonists and awareness of planet Earth.

The main material for the seats is linen fiber, a composite that stands out above all for being ecological and highly resistant to ultraviolet rays. It is also capable of tolerating corrosion, as well as impacts of considerable force to become an extension of the drivers while they are inside the cars.

It may also interest you: Mahle develops a highly efficient magnetless electric motor

This makes the work carried out by the two brands mentioned above a true gem in terms of time, since the parts provided by Formula Seven avoid the hard work for the Formula SAE engineers to focus their attention on assembling the components cars and go straight to testing, and now with the inclusion of new seats, working minutes are optimized more and more.

flax fiber (Pic: Bercella)

Benefits offered by the new Bercella and Formula Seven seat

In addition to all the aforementioned, this seat is capable of saving incredible space thanks to the linen fiber, as well as weight, an essential factor for the SAE Formula, since it only weighs just under a kilo and a half (1,450 kg). On the other hand, the resin used in the manufacture of the piece has a polyester base, this being the only non-ecological material. However, both brands confirmed that they are already working on ecological bioresins to turn this seat into a true 100% ecological work.

In this way, sustainable mobility increasingly enters competitive categories and daily life, given that the medium and long-term goal is to reduce the impact of the carbon footprint and other materials that make vehicles lethal for the planet, so much so that the International Automobile Federation (FIA) promotes this type of “green initiatives”.

The availability of batteries for electric cars continues to be a concern globally due to the growth in demand for these vehicles. A report by the consulting firm “Ultima Media”, commissioned by the Swiss company ABB, revealed that by 2030 the so-called batteries will be insufficient for the booming market for new technology.

The study indicates that due to the measures that governments have taken to protect the environment, including the limitation to produce more cars with the need for fossil fuel, it is expected that by 2036 electric cars will be above the aforementioned in terms of sales.

The report explains that by the projection date there will be some 80 battery factories in the world that will have to modify their production processes in order to meet the requests. Given this, ABB suggests that automated procedures should be carried out if the conclusion predicted by the research is not to be reached.

Read also: Arcfox Alpha S: Huawei’s first automotive bet

In addition, they propose that the centers where the batteries are assembled have a joint and strategic location, in order to implement the automation system they recommend in a feasible and efficient way.

The report’s researchers highlight the importance of the battery pack assembly being located near or within the automobile assembly facility.

Production in figures

The Asian continent is the leader in battery production at the global level with 77% of the market reaching a total of 450 GWh. Europe is its most immediate pursuer with only 13% of manufacturing and the United States closes the list with 10%.

By 2030, according to ABB and Ultima Media, Europe is expected to have a rebound in battery production to reach 33%, which would still be below the 57% that Asia will have by now.

Tanja Vainio, general manager of ABB’s automatic business line, assures that “automation is key to increase safety, quality, traceability of the assembly and to offer battery technologies in a profitable way, which is fundamental for the expansion of electric vehicles”.

“With production speed and flexibility essential to the successful scale-up of the EV battery industry, our cellular production architecture enables manufacturers to quickly validate a cell design and then roll out production cells globally with uniform quality, safety and productivity standards. Rollouts can be scaled to demand with the flexibility to adjust capacity in real time,” added Vainio.

Related content: ABB Debuts 350kW Terra HP Generation III: A premium charging experience

Regarding the reduction of the high costs that still represent the manufacture of an electric car, Vainio stressed that ABB is working in alliance with several companies “to increase productivity, quality and safety levels, as well as reduce finished pack costs through automated assembly – vital if EVs are to meet their required cost and adoption targets.”

The key point reflected in the study to conclude with the battery availability question is that in 2030 the large-scale automotive industry will multiply demand by six compared to 2020, taking into account that the report considers that 2036 will be the turning point on sales.
