More than a Vehicle

Now, after surprising just by revealing its design in virtual form, it now did the same in physical form when SangYup Lee, Hyundai’s executive vice president and chief design officer, revealed features that go far beyond driving, serving as a complete technology suite that transcends the concepts of mobility and transportation.

“A cocoon-like personal space,” Lee defined the IONIQ 6, which can be taken anywhere and transformed into a personal office or sleeping center.
The center console has been designed to accommodate a laptop computer, as well as an integrated notes application on one of the car’s two 12-inch screens. USB-C and USB-A ports can power multiple devices to maximize the work or relaxation experience.

Also, you can work outside the vehicle by powering the laptop through the V2L adapter, serving as a great charger that can also provide power to other devices, such as appliances.

Finally, its creators describe it as an ideal car for people looking for more technology, who are company professionals, while the IONIQ 5 is aimed more at a family vehicle.

The world of technology surprises every day with new innovations for electric mobility evolution. The main brands from the automotive world are increasingly adopting more sophisticated systems for vehicle production, not only to boost their sales, but also to contribute to environmental protection.

Accordingly, Hyundai announced a partnership with IonQ, a U.S. company specializing in Quantum Computing, in order to apply it during car manufacturing.

Quantum Computing is a different paradigm from traditional computation, based on cubits, a special combination of zeros and ones to form algorithms for solving situations that seemed impossible just a few years ago.

Battery Focus

Hyundai and IonQ will apply this new knowledge and start working on Lithium batteries to develop more efficient chemistries. The focus will be on performance, production cost-including supply chain and battery end-of-life-all the way to comprehensive cell safety.

Through the impressive reach a quantum computer can have, the automotive giant will perform a process of simulating chemical reactions inside battery cells with never-before-seen precision.

This will make it possible to design and develop new materials that save time, money and effort, while increasing charge and discharge cycles before they begin to degrade, improving energy capacity, reliability and higher safety standards.

A Step into the Future

TaeWon Lim, Executive Vice President and Director of Hyundai Motor Group’s Materials Engineering and Research Center, expects this partnership with IonQ to provide innovation in the development of basic materials in virtual space for various parts of future mobility. He noted that from the company they are motivated to enter the new era of innovation with quantum, to have a more effective battery power.

For his part, Peter Chapman, President of IonQ assured that the company’s mission is to solve the most complex problems through the continuous development of quantum computations, and see global climate change as one of those problems to be addressed with quantum chemistry solutions.

“Battery efficiency is one of the most promising emerging areas where quantum computing can make a difference. We are delighted to be working with Hyundai Motor Company,” he added.

This partnership solidifies Hyundai’s commitment to electric mobility and sustainability to meet its 2025 goal, by which time it expects to manufacture more than 500,000 electrified cars annually.

Despite the great advances of technology in the automotive industry, there are those who prefer a balance between taking the positives of the old and the modern to present a vehicle that appeals to all targets. This is the case of Hyundai, which has built an all-electric version of its Heritage Series Grandeur from the 1980s.

The South Korean company stresses that the car was designed as a tribute to the thirty-fifth anniversary of this classic car. The prototype combines its styling from the past with the latest technology, such as exterior LED headlights, while inside, the buttons on the dashboard were replaced by a large flat-screen touchscreen and a modern audio system.

Redesigned side mirrors, covered wheels and sliding cladding were also developed for the model.

Interior Features

Inside, the car received a luxury makeover with burgundy velour upholstery in the front of the seats, reminiscent of the original interiors and chestnut nappa leather in the rear.

It features a single-spoke steering wheel and airplane-style shifter which are designed to maintain the aesthetics of the era. Other details include a hidden drop-down compartment for storing valuables in the center console armrest, and bronze-colored lighting that mimics 1980s audio equipment.

Regarding the mechanics, Hyundai merely points out that it is powered by an all-electric motor, but without giving details about it as was the case with the Pony Concept.

Inspiration from the Past

Hak-soo Ha, Head of Interiors Group at Hyundai Design Center noted that with the Heritage Grandeur Series, designers have reinterpreted an important part of the brand’s history, as a unique combination of the old and the contemporary reflecting the limitless possibilities of the new era.

“As our designers envision the future, it is important to look back at what we have created in the past and find inspiration from it,” the executive added.

The Heritage Series Grandeur’s own sound system was developed by South Korean expert Guk-il Yu and uses 18 speakers. The brand claims that the car’s dashboard and center console have been molded to the acoustics of the concert hall’s architecture.

When introducing this gem, Hyundai described its approach to design as “Newtro” (new + retro).

Hyundai’s family of electric cars has great projections to increase over the years. One of the models keeping the brand’s followers expectant is the Ioniq 7. Therefore, the brand has decided to reveal a small preview of what will be the Asian sustainable vehicle.

It is an image of the prototype that could later become the design in question. It should be noted that this is not the production model but a design by the brand to illustrate a minimal preview of the upcoming car.

The acronym SEVEN refers to the number seven in English decorating the lower part of the front grille. However, this is a totally different prototype to the Ioniq, but it serves to ‘predict’ what the next member of this family will be like.

The LED headlights have been symmetrically placed in the form of small squares. 39 geometric figures to be exact appear on the far right of the front grille that reveals the front wheel and part of the rear with an attractive silhouette decorated in dark green, pleasing to the eye and imposing at the same time.

Although electric innovation is getting all the spotlight nowadays, even with legislation being passed to encourage its implementation, another element has also emerged which promises to be competitive in terms of clean energy.

This is Hydrogen-powered vehicle development. The most important brands in the world have already turned their attention to this aspect, and organizations like Hyundai are betting on the construction of their cars, such as the Hyundai Nexo and its XCient fleet of trucks.

The South Korean giant will launch this September a strategy that will set the guidelines for its planning on building cars with this structure.

It is the “Hyundai Hydrogen Wave”, a virtual event where it will show new prototypes that will use this technology. There will be several “next-generation fuel cell electric vehicles”, among which there will be a new truck, and even an interesting sports sedan that has been shown for the first time on an original video.

The audiovisual material details that this future model is the size of a Hyundai Sonata, covered by a blue, black and white camouflage. Also, the brand demonstrates that hydrogen can also offer all the sportiness of a traditional combustion car, as it is not only able to skid without contemplation and drive at high speed, but also offers the sound of an electric racing car.

Event details and central focus

On September 7, Hyundai Motor Group will broadcast live on their YouTube channel, the digital meeting that will unveil their hydrogen-based wave of products and technologies.

The Asian manufacturer promises to focus on the big challenge of hydrogen mobility: refueling. With a virtually non-existent network of refueling stations, it is impossible to democratize this technology, but Hyundai promises a supply chain that will revolutionize this technology.

Augusto Farfus has been one of the drivers with the best pace during the debut season of the PURE ETCR, the electric touring car series. At 37 years of age, the Brazilian is delighted to join this innovative competition.

Behind the wheel of the Hyundai ETCR, the racer dazzled at the first race in Aragon, and has become one of the benchmarks. “What I’ve been able to bring to the project is my experience in car development, working as part of a team and things like that, but to be honest, it’s all so different compared to anything else, you can’t say it works like a GT car or whatever,” Farfus says of this new experience.

“It’s like comparing sushi and pizza, both are delicious and edible, but also completely different. It’s the same in this case, such a new and beautiful experience,” he added about the features of the PURE ETCR.

Related content: Introducing an Electric Boat with the Longest Autonomy Range

The ETCR cars are used in 300 KW and 500 KW configurations, and the Hyundai driver admits that driving these cars at maximum power is a big challenge: “It’s very difficult to drive with 500 KW because of the enormous power. You have a very small operating window in these cars, that’s why we’ve seen so many mistakes,” he explained.

“You stop 5 meters too late and that’s bye-bye, you won’t be able to stop it. This puts the drivers under pressure and you have very few free practice runs. We were able to test that at Vallelunga and it’s an incredible challenge,” expressed the Curitiba-born driver.

Cars Comparison

On this particular, Farfus stated that the power of the cars are similar. “All the cars have the same propulsion system, so the development is even more difficult, because you have a dominant factor in the car that you cannot modify.”

“You have cars that, as similar as they are, are also completely different. For example, Williams has a standard traction control that is the same for all the cars, but whether it works on one model that doesn’t mean it will also work for the others, so it’s also an incredibly difficult job for them,” he detailed.

The Brazilian feels that the driving style required to push the ETCR cars to the limits puts an extra focus on the rider that is very appealing: “It’s a lot of fun because it’s difficult. The car is a different beast compared to yesterday, and you go out for time trials without knowing what the track is like, and you can’t even test it on the out lap because you have to save tires,” Farfus maintained.

“It’s very challenging because you get into it and you don’t know what’s going to happen, and it has 900 Nm of torque, which is the same as a Bugatti Veyron, and there’s no GT car like that,” he pointed out.

Tournament Planning

Farfus celebrated the PURE ETCR’s great organization despite being a new competition and the threat posed by COVID-19.  “It’s great to see that now everything is working as planned, I’m very happy. Considering the COVID and so on, it’s amazing what has been achieved.”

“I am absolutely sure that this championship will take shape in the coming seasons and will be very popular. It will take a while for people to start watching this sport, but it will be a great spectacle, especially once more manufacturers enter the series,” he finished.

Hyundai achieves another milestone on its path toward a change in policies for electric and hydrogen battery-powered vehicles. The manufacturer announced its Xcient fleet of trucks in Switzerland has already reached one million kilometers driven in just 11 months.

During that time, the South Korean company’s cars have reduced carbon (CO2) emissions by more than 631 tons. Following their arrival in Switzerland in October 2020, the 46 hydrogen fuel cell trucks achieved this milestone in service of 25 Switzerland-based logistics, distribution and supermarket supply companies.

The companies that rely on these new-era trucks praise their extensive autonomy and fast refueling, two essential aspects for heavy transport which make this technology an ideal solution for their operations.

Related content: Nico Rosberg reveals his top 5 drivers

Jörg Ackermann, President of the H2 Mobility Switzerland Association, noted “the Swiss transport and logistics companies are convinced that hydrogen fuel cell commercial vehicles have greatest potential among various alternative energy vehicles.”

He detailed that partner organizations “are not limited only to introduce hydrogen fuel cell trucks. They have high expectations with hydrogen as an energy source, which has a great potential for the future, and believe that it will be the key to transition to green energy.”

Specifically, the hydrogen’s biggest advantage is its excellent storage capacity. So it will play an important role in the green energy era. Many distribution companies are already experiencing benefits by using Xcient fuel cell trucks firsthand, and I believe that if the summer operation is successfully completed, the demand for fuel cell trucks will grow even more

Jörg Ackermann, President of the H2 Mobility

Technology growth and expansion

Hyundai reported that after the success of Xcient in Switzerland, they expect to ship 140 units of 2021 model by the end of this year. Leading this green switch even further, their fleet will expand to 1,600 hydrogen-electric trucks by 2025.

The company also estimates that by 2030 its production capability will increase to around 500,000 fuel-cell vehicles, considering the construction of all its partner companies.

In addition, Hyundai is working with bus operators in Germany to conduct in-service testing of its Elec City Fuel Cell hydrogen model, while exploring opportunities to introduce the zero-emission vehicle to the European market.

“We are planning to expand to other European countries next year,” said Mark Freymüller, general manager of Hyundai Hydrogen Mobility. “Germany and the Netherlands are the most likely, but there is also a great interest in our vehicles in nearly all European countries.”

With the Swiss experience and the rapid expansion of this innovation, the company hopes to demonstrate that hydrogen-powered buses are a reliable and efficient solution for commercial transportation.
