The arrival of 2023 represents yet another season for the WES World e-Bike Series, the 100% electric bike category that offers action in various European countries, naturally incredible scenery and top-level riders fighting for competition glory.

Last season saw Nicole Göldi and Jérôme Gilloux crowned champions in their respective categories, after a demanding calendar that was more disputed in the women’s category, but still gave hundreds of emotions as the races went by.

In that sense, the great 2022 season only leaves room for a better battle in 2023. In view of this, know how would be the possible calendar of WES World e-Bike Series facing a new campaign of the 100% electric bike racing category.

Undoubtedly, what will be virtually certain is that the 2023 season will start in Monaco, the home of WES. It has always been like that, therefore, there is no indication that they will change the tradition of starting there. Thus, a new battle for glory could begin in April or May.

Then, other nations present in the WES schedule would be back, such as Italy (Bologna-Montana), Spain (Costa Brava-Girona), France (Charade/Clermont-Ferrand) and Belgium, the latter also appears as a safe scenario after the agreement between the category and the mythical Formula 1 circuit, Spa Francorchamps.

The WES UCI E-MTB XC World Cup continued its action this weekend in Girona, Spain, with another double day of racing that again saw Nicole Göldi (Trek) consolidate her position as the best rider on the course, while on the men’s side Jérôme Gilloux (Lapierre) and Joris Ryf (Bergstrom) split honors.

For Saturday’s competition, Göldi and Guilloux were the fastest qualifiers to claim the Raspini Pole Position. Nicole started confidently and gradually increased her lead despite the fact that it would not be an easy race, especially with Sofia Wiedenroth (Specialized) chasing her throughout the course.

On the other hand, Jérôme got off to a solid start and stayed that way to triumph, once again so far in the 2022 World Cup to consolidate his lead in the overall rider standings with full authority.

Second Race

Saturday’s events were behind us, as a new competition was about to begin. On the women’s side nothing changed as Nicole Göldi was steady again despite crashing on the first lap, losing valuable time which she recovered to win again in the Costa Brava-Girona round.

Now, the men’s race saw something that had never happened so far in WES 2022, “the fall of Jérôme Gilloux“. For the first time, the Frenchman from Lapierre did not win the race, as Joris Ryf started with speed, took the first corner in first place and did not get off until he triumphed.

Göldi thus leads the women’s standings with 213, followed by Sofia Wiedenroth (169) and Justine Tonso (143). Despite not winning, Jérôme Gilloux remains the undisputed leader in the men’s standings with 230 points, followed by Joris Ryf (157) and Ismael Esteban Agüero (83).

Finally, where the next race will be held again in Spain, but this time in Barcelona, on October 15.

The third round of the WES World e-Bike Series took place at the Charade Circuit in Clermont-Ferrand, where Nicole Göldi, Joris Ryf and Jérôme Gilloux were the weekend’s winners after two intense races on a truly demanding French track that brought out the best in them during the six laps of each race.

Under a bright sun, Saturday July 23 welcomed the riders for the first race of the weekend, where Göldi and Ryf took the Raspini Pole Position and then went on to ratify the victory. The Trek rider remained solid throughout the course to clinch her second victory of 2022, which had come in Bologna.

On the other hand, the men’s section lived a totally different scenario in race 1. The lead changed constantly in the first three laps, offering a luxury show in Clermont-Ferrand, where Ryf (Specialized/Bikebox) was climbing little by little to place himself in second position to then attack Hugo Pigeon after a final sprint that left a photo finish on the Charade circuit.

Race 2

What happened on Saturday was left behind, a new day was in charge of leading a new race where everything had to be left out. The women’s competition again saw Nicole Göldi, the reigning world champion take pole position for the third time in six races, and then clinch yet another victory (her third) with an incredible pace on track that helped her recover after being overtaken by Justine Tonso.

The men’s race once again featured an old acquaintance as pole position and victory owner: Jérôme Gilloux, who until race 1 at the Charade Circuit had come in flawlessly with all the available wins to his credit. In this race, he was also beaten at the start but then recovered to lead the race from the second lap on.

Thus, three winners for four races leave expectations for the next WES race, which will be held at a mythical motorsport circuit: Spa-Francorchamps, from September 3-4 in Belgium.

Months of preparation and waiting finally paid off, as the 2022 WES UCI E-Mountain Bike World Cup season debut was successfully held in Monaco-Peille, where riders Justine Tonso and Jérôme Gilloux, both from the Lapierre Overlot team, triumphed after a challenging course in terms of weather and terrain.

The circuit designed for the first race of the championship was expected to be complicated and very technical in some parts, and so it was. In addition, the riders had to battle against a light rain, precise enough to make the road slippery and tricky.

The race saw some of them hit the ground, muddy and with willpower they continued. However, at the head of the competition, Gilloux brought out the champion’s caste and absolute dominator of Monaco to add another win at the venue, in fact, the Frenchman is who has taken all the victories since the championship’s inauguration in 2019.

Tonso scored the first victory of the WES UCI E-Mountain Bike World Cup 2022, 1.22 minutes ahead of her closest pursuer, Germany’s Sofia Wiedenroth, and 3.08 minutes ahead of Switzerland’s Nathalie Schneitter, who closed out the podium at the official debut of the 100% electrified category of bike racing.

Finally, the action does not stop, as the second race of the season will be held on Sunday, April 24, in the same place but under a different race layout, where Gilloux will try to remain dominant on the territory of ‘The Principality’, while Tonso will seek to consolidate his good start of the campaign.

WES is preparing the 2022 edition of the UCI E-MTB XC World Cup in style, having announced the provisional calendar of the championship a few months ago. However, there were two locations to be confirmed, although one of them has been recently revealed to give more shape to the upcoming competition.

Bologna, Italy, will host the WES from May 28-29 when the second race of the season will be held in the European nation. The Apennine Mountains will be the place selected by the organization of the championship to test the riders, who will try to conquer the absolute glory on Italian soil.

“Bologna confirms its presence in the #WES2022 race calendar! Italy will once again host the UCI E-MTB XC World Cup event, this time at the Monghidoro area, in the Apennine Mountains. See you there next May 28-29!”, announced the competition through its official social networks.

The Apennine Mountains form a beautiful natural expanse running 1,400 kilometers from the north to south of Italy. Forests form part of the main panorama of the place, although a great peak of 2,914 meters stands out above the rest, called Gran Sasso d’Italia. There are 223 high peaks that exceed 2,000 meters.

The flora and fauna diversity makes the place a natural source of incredible landscapes. The Apennine Mountains are home to chamois, Italian wolf, golden eagle, leonardo vulture, lynx and brown bears, but in the north there are also weasels, martens, otters, deer, foxes and badgers.

This place is full of history, because during the Second World War, the German army used the region to defend itself from enemy attacks, suffering an unsuccessful strike in September 1944. The place was baptized by the Germans as the Gothic Line.

A few weeks ago, WES announced the official calendar of the UCI E-MTB XC World Cup. Several interesting news and novelties accompanied this revelation. New circuits will take over the competition, while a new race format will be premiered with fans in anticipation.

The legendary Spa-Francorchamps circuit will receive all the action, adrenaline and speed of this sustainable category, being one of the most attractive scenarios to be visited by the series. However, before admiring the competition, it is necessary to know exactly how the format works in which the cyclists will try to achieve glory.

The championship will be run under a double race format, where the qualirace will establish the order of the riders prior to each valid, twice per weekend. Diversity will continue to be part of it, where men and women will race together. The top 50 finishers of each gender will be part of the following WES UCI E-MTB XC World Cup race.

(Photo: WES World E-Bike Series)

The route of each course will be announced prior to each event. A great combination of mountain, coastal and urban areas will guarantee adrenaline-filled action and challenges to overcome. In addition, there are individual prizes to be awarded at each round:

Magneti Marelli Checkstar Power Lap: Will be awarded to the rider who achieves the fastest lap.

WES Holeshot: Will be given to the fastest driver at the start of each race after the first corner.

Of course, at the end of the season there will be an individual and team champion. However, if a bike manufacturer supplies vehicles to more than one team, he will also be eligible for a separate title. The same will apply to the motor manufacturers.
