It is not by chance that Formula E drivers are breaking into Formula 1. The arrival of Nick de Vries and Stofel Vandoorne to the grand circus shuts down the mouths of those who have repeatedly questioned the quality of the electric single-seater series.

On this aspect, racer Jake Dennis considers it positive for the category that one of its drivers has been able to reach F1. Although they have lost a world champion for 2023, the Briton believes that the signing of de Vries by AlphaTauri gives more credibility and prestige to the tournament founded by Alejandro Agag.

Formula E will lose the first world champion in its history in 2023. The Dutchman says goodbye to the electric category to realize his dream of becoming an official driver in the top category of world motorsport.

Dennis looks favorably on De Vries’ move, even if, in the first instance, it does not help Formula E by losing a monarch. The Briton argues that Nyck’s arrival in Formula 1 reinforces the competitive level in the championship.

No criticism

Despite being a tough blow for Formula E, Dennis endorses the step taken by de Vries. However, the Briton maintains that he will not change Formula E for any of the ten teams on the grid, because at his age, the main thing is to win races and be competitive, so he is not for very long-term projects.

Speaking to Motorsport, Dennis said he was very happy about the Tulip driver’s decision. “I’ve known him since my first day in European karting, he has been one of my biggest rivals. We’ve grown up together and raced against each other, so to see him in Formula 1, against other of my adversaries in the past, is great, it’s also good for Formula E”.

“When he raced at Monza, all we wanted is for it to go badly, as it would have left us Formula E drivers in a bad place. Obviously, the way he tackled the weekend and how well he did, it gives more credibility to our World Cup,” he emphasized.

Although it is true that Formula E is still a young competition compared to the tradition of other tournaments, the directors have ambitious goals in mind, such as, for example, merging with F1 in the medium term.

FIA ETCR had set a precedent the previous year after competing under the name Pure ETCR. However, for 2022 it took an impressive leap in quality after adopting FIA homologation and racing this year under a new name: FIA ETCR eTouring Car World Cup.

However, in the words of Xavier Gavory, Series Director, racing under the Pure ETCR format was more about a test season. “It was a fitting launch pad towards a bright future. I am particularly proud of the fact that we managed to keep our DNA, to be different and daring,” he assured.

Of course, he highlighted the commitment to sustainability as a core element of the series. “We serve the sport right through a different race format with short and sharp battles, plus a much more sustainable approach,” he emphasized.

FIA ETCR 2022

The category is barely two years old counting the previous format. There is still a long way to go, although, it brings with it all the necessary elements to establish itself as one of the most attractive touring divisions in motorsport, with the added advantage of being aligned with electrification going forward.

FIA ETCR is still young, but it is getting stronger despite the challenges along the way. The most important element is the fact that we are stepping up and building momentum to become an FIA World Cup represents a big step forward,” Gavory noted.

“On the track, the action was phenomenal with so many different scenarios in our race format. We saw photo finishes, teammates crashing into each other, drivers talking directly to their rivals while still on the track to express their opinions, team tactics and dramatic moments off the track,” he finished.

After three races, the 2022 UCI E-Mountain Bike World Cup season is starting to take shape for the rest of the calendar, although there are still six more races to go. The men’s field is more open than the women’s, with Lapierre Overlot’s Frenchmen Jérôme Gilloux and Trek’s swiss Nicole Göldi at the top of the standings.

Guilloux has a almost perfect record after three rounds and sixr races. In Monaco-Peille he took top honors during the opening weekend of competition and the opening of the World Cup. Two weeks later he proved to be the fastest in Bologna-Montagne to take two more important victories that may represent the start of a breakaway in the overall, although, in Charade he splits honors with Joris Ryf to break the perfection that he had so far, but he still with a high gap at the top of the table.

The race for the women’s title is tighter, although Tonso took a double in Monaco-Peille, in Bologna-Montagne Round 1 she broke the seat of her electric bike, forcing her to retire and losing valuable points. However, the next day she recovered, took the lead and went on to win Round 2. However, at the Charade circuit, Nicole Göldi took it all into the Round 3 weekend to put the championship on her favor and become the new provisional leader.

Extreme E has just come out of two very back-to-back races that gave continuity to the 2022 season of the championship. Before that it was necessary to wait for a break that exceeded four months after a change in the calendar by the organizers that dropped a significant weight on the island of Sardinia.

Island X Prix I and Island X Prix II were held there. The first race was won by Sara Price and Kyle LeDuc of Chip Ganassi Racing, while the second was conquered by Johan Kristoffersson and Mikaela Åhlin-Kottulinsky of Rosberg X Racing. However, beyond their victories, certain factors stood out during Extreme E’s presence in the region.

During the opening race of the 2022 season in NEOM, Saudi Arabia, driver Kevin Hansen injured his back and had to go through a recovery process to get to Sardinia in the best possible shape.

Sustainable Actions in Sardinia

Extreme E reports that 2021 saw a series of fires that resulted in the destruction of 20,000 hectares of land, wiped out around 30 million bees and displaced more than 1,000 people. In addition, the ocean water was also significantly affected.

With its collaboration with Vodafone Business, the 100% electric all-terrain category launched a fire prevention campaign in the Montiferru area. By means of low-power, long-lasting wide-area network sensors, any fire can be detected, alerting the authorities to prevent damage such as that described above.

On the other hand, the marine posidonia was also analyzed, one of the aspects that Extreme E emphasized in its first visit during the 2021 season. In this section, the category collaborates to study, analyze and replenish marine phanerogams in Sardinia, where the main objective is to plant one million by 2030.

Tesla is working on multiple aspects of electric mobility with the goal of being a pioneer, from small, medium, large cars, trucks and charging infrastructure. Now, one of the sections that has attracted attention are the company’s so-called “autonomous robotaxis”, which already have a date of arrival on the market.

Another project by Elon Musk is Starlink, the high-speed satellite internet that plans to bring to the Amazon. Precisely, he was visiting Brazil to talk about it, where one of the questions he was asked was about the company’s autonomous driving technology, to which he responded positively stating that by May, “robotaxis will be a reality”.

Now, what is the difference between an autonomous vehicle and Tesla’s trademark. Calling it a “robotaxi” will make the car as autonomous as possible, i.e. with level 5 driving. For several years, Musk has announced such cars, it was even thought that they would arrive in 2024, but clearly the Tesla CEO’s statements change the whole picture in a positive way.

One of the challenges in bringing quality autonomous vehicles to the sustainable mobility market for Tesla, Musk says, will be based on solving real-world artificial intelligence, which no one else has solved.

“The whole road system is made for neural networks and biological eyes. So really, to solve driving, we have to solve neural networks and cameras, and I think we’ll get there this year,” the Tesla CEO commented when revealing the original news of autonomous cabs.

About Tesla

Tesla was founded in 2003 by a group of engineers who wanted to prove that electric vehicles can be better, faster and more fun to drive than gasoline-powered cars. Today, the company not only makes electrified models, but also infinitely scalable clean energy generation and storage products.

A little over a month ago, expectations for the Vancouver E-Prix were extremely high. The event’s promoters were already talking about 30,000 tickets sold and a great musical show around the day.

However, the organizers themselves commented that there were still some formalities to be approved with the city authorities, but they hoped that this would not be an obstacle for the great party prepared to welcome Formula E, which had not visited Canadian territory since 2017 in Montreal.

At the end of March, representatives of the Canadian city’s public administration, noted that the approval of the E-Prix would depend on the requested documents being delivered, reviewed and approved by the city’s Film and Special Events Office.

Related content: Abt Plans to Return to Formula E for Gen3 Era

“Complex event planning requires more effort in its first year, and the city is monitoring progress closely and is in frequent contact with the event organizer to help ensure everything is in order in a timely manner,” officials detailed.

The worst-case scenario came true and the Vancouver event was postponed due to a lack of permits. In a press release, OSS Group, the company sponsoring the race, informed that after an intense analysis with the city of Vancouver, it has had to make the “incredibly difficult decision to postpone the Canadian E-Fest until 2023”.

Vancouver E-Prix preliminary map

“The City of Vancouver fully supports the postponement. The staging of a world-class event is of the utmost importance to the organization.” “We will be communicating with ticket holders through APTI, our ticketing partner, to inform them of their options,” adds the promoters’ release.

Waiting for Formula E

The Vancouver E-Prix was scheduled for July 2, two weeks before the visit to New York and London, next July 16-17 and July 30-31, respectively.

So far Formula E has not commented on this decision, and it is expected that the electric single-seater series officials will announce some substitution or other measure to counteract this unexpected situation.

Barring any further changes to the season, the 2021-22 season will end in Seoul, with Formula E visiting South Korea for the first time on August 13-14.

With Vancouver set for 2023, it will join another confirmed new venue with Cape Town hosting a race in the Green Point area of the South African city.

Electric categories have gradually taken over competitive sports. Land, sea and air have been conquered by different categories seeking to bring sustainability to all sectors of mobility. E1 Series is one of them, a division aiming to electrify the waters, raise awareness, and of course, provide exciting, eye-catching and attractive races.

Rodi Basso was present at the 2nd Vitual Summit organized by Green Racing News. There, the CEO of the category revealed important details and aspects to consider regarding the upcoming maritime revolution thanks to the initiative to embrace the oceans, during a pleasant conversation led by Juan Moran, Global Customer Director of DHL.

“It all started in pandemic times. I was talking with Alejandro (Agag) about different events and businesses. There he mentioned having invested in a London-based startup called SeaBird Technologies; he asked me about different materials, technologies, sustainable carbon fiber that you can reuse. So, when Alejandro was asking me these questions I immediately saw an opportunity to build a racing platform.”

“I’m a fervent believer in combining sport and technology.”

Rodi Basso

E1 Series has one of the most transparent goals regarding the integration of sport, sustainability and oceanscapes. “You can show the world how to enjoy with technology featuring a new wave of experiences on marine mobility. Enjoy the water, have fun and be respectful of this important element of the ecosystem.”

Undoubtedly, the electric boat racing category plans to make events all over the place, where people can gather at incredible locations while enjoying the RaceBird traveling across the waters at incredible speeds, without forgetting about the main objective of betting on mobility and green behaviors.

“We are targeting only 10 locations for the first season. But, we are talking to 70 cities, engaging different conversation levels to host the races, of course, it is an impossible challenge to have them all. In fact, after these races that we have already decided, we will be in Monaco, Rotterdam and Budapest”.

On the other hand, concerning the logistical transport of the category, Basso detailed how they are preparing to contaminate as little as possible when traveling between races. “We will build a series of boat sets depending on where the distribution of the championship will be. We will use the Extreme E St. Helena boat, in addition, we will have another set of boats that will go along with the Extreme E championship.”  E1 Series will have specific boats for certain locations with the intention of reducing the long distances, and consequently, the emissions.

Waymo is a company specialized in autonomous driving systems, and through an official statement, it assures to be totally ready to provide the city of San Francisco with a fleet of 100% electric and driverless vehicles. The proposal has been submitted, and if approved, they would be the first to offer this service in the city.

With the continuous technological advances, autonomous driving is gaining more strength nowadays, and it is expected to become a common factor in a very short period of time. Many companies are carrying out tests to make the most of it, and Waymo is one of them, who have emerged from the bottom to become a sector reference.

They have been working for more than 12 years on this kind of system for the driving of the future, therefore, they have enough time to support their words and place these vehicles at San Francisco’s disposal for people to enjoy short, medium and long trips; everything will depend on the person requesting the service.

(Pic: Waymo)

Precisely, the company has an “Uber” style: the user will specify a place to be picked up by an I-Pace Jaguar from Waymo, a route to travel and the final destination of the journey, to be transferred from one point to another without the need for a driver present in the vehicle.

Waymo’s Testing

Workers of the company Waymo have been the lucky ones to perform the tests of the vehicles, proving to be positive and satisfactory according to the company. In fact, if the project is approved in San Francisco, the initial trips would be free to boost the platform and give more power to the brand.

Moreover, it will not be the first time that a city in the United States has the presence of Waymo autonomous vehicles, as Arizona has a small fleet installed by the company in 2017, although the difference with San Francisco would be the power given that those that would be arriving will be 100% electric.

In fact, from now on, residents of the city will be able to join the Trusted Tester, Waymo’s program to offer rides in its autonomous vehicles in order to get the appreciation of users, and of course, to publicize the service they hope to implement.

About Waymo

Waymo’s mission is to make it safe and easy for people and things to get to their destination. From moving people to moving goods. At the company they are taking autonomous driving to new places. Their mission is big and the work has the potential to transform lives.

Only 14 points separates Sam Bird from leading the Championship, currently held by Nyck de Vries with 91 points. The Jaguar Racing driver had a black weekend in London, where he was unable to score points due a couple of retirements.

Bird regretted not being able to score at the London E-Prix, as he was leading before the start: “We had the pace. It just didn’t happen for us”.

The Briton, however, remains with high hopes, because a good run in this weekend’s double-header in Berlin, closing E-Prix season seven, would allow him to get his first Formula E title, a symbolic fact because Sam has been with the electric single-seater series since its debut in 2014.

“Winning the title would be super. It’s something I’ve been working on for seven years. I’d be really excited if I do it,” said the 34-year-old driver.

Setting his Sights on Berlin

Sam has promised himself to do all his best in Berlin, freeing from any pressure, as he added that, regardless the result, he will keep his head up for doing a good job.

“I had some positive results there in the past. I have never won in Berlin, but I had one or two podiums. So, there’s no reason why I couldn’t add one more to that count,” he said.

He continued, “If I I can leave Berlin knowing that I’ve done everything in my power to try to win the Championship and it’s not happening for some reason, I will be at ease.”

“We can leave Berlin with something really special,” the driver noted, while referring at the same time to the current campaign as his “best season” so far.

This weekend the fourth round of the FIM Enel MotoE World Cup will take place at the legendary Assen track in the Netherlands. The stage will allow us to see the intense rivalry that has been generated between Alessadro Zaccone (leader of the competition by one point) and Dominique Aegerter.

The Assen circuit is considered “The Cathedral of Motorcycling”. the racetrack was inaugurated and designed in 1955 especially for the Netherlands Grand Prix of the Speed Motorcycle World Championship.

Likewise, the track also hosts races for the World Superbike Championship and the British Championship and has the capacity for 100,000 spectators.

Regarding the route, its length has changed over the years since it was initially 7,705 meters long but was shortened to 6,134 in 1984, 5,997 in 2005 and then 4,750 meters in 2006.

It is worth mentioning that the Dutch Grand Prix by tradition always takes place on the last weekend of June. The previous year the track was on the 2020 season calendar but the Dutch government announced a ban on all mass events due to the Coronavirus pandemic until at least September 1, so it was finally canceled.

The layout of the circuit makes the race very technical for the drivers and with little margin for error. Despite the changes to the route that have been carried out in the last 18 years, Assen is classified as a “safety circuit” that avoids large crashes and the proximity of loopholes in curves.

In this sense, the curves are banked (slightly inclined) and the surface is very adherent, even in wet conditions.

Apart from the Zaccone-Aegerter rivalry, we must pay special attention to what the Spaniards Jordi Torres and Miquel Pons can do, since both are in third and fourth place in the drivers’ championship. Likewise, the Brazilian Eric Granado has been one of the protagonists of the season by winning the French Grand Prix and also obtaining all the E-Poles of the series so far.
