The impressive track of Assen, Netherlands, was the stage for two new days of the MotoE, where the great riders of the competition showed their favorite badges again. Dominique Aegerter and Eric Granado were the fastest during the contest to shine in races that left emotions, speed and even a scare with the accident of Miquel Pons.

In the first race, Aegerter narrowly beat Mattia Casadei, whom he overtook in the last corner. From the start, the Swiss, the Italians Ferrari and Casadei, and Granado showed signs that the race was going to be extremely close.

The last turn was decisive with a tremendous offensive by Aegerter, a sector where he showed that he is one of the fastest riders in the competition. With great strategy to overtake at the right time, the Swiss was able to cross the finish line first, followed by a Granado and a relegated Casadei who could not maintain his advantage.

Granado Shines at the Second Race

On the closing day, Eric Granado took the honors by being in first place when the competition was stopped by a red flag due to an accident between Miquel Pons and Marc Alcoba. It was before reaching two-thirds of the race, so due to MotoGP conditions it was decided to call it a day and hand out half points.

Before the accident, the rain that fell on the asphalt of Assen predicted an early day that despite being declared in water, all riders opted for the dry and, in the formation lap, asked to delay the appointment despite being warned of the rain.

At the start Mattia Casadei took the first position by braking on the outside, but with Dominique Aegerter and Matteo Ferrari close behind. Granado already overtook Ferrari to take third, very close to Aegerter. However, his teammate, Miquel Pons, surprised him from behind, passing him on the inside under hard braking. It was a wake-up call for the Brazilian, who quickly regained his position and also passed Aegerter.

At the start of the third lap Granado passed Casadei to take the lead of the race. Then came the moment of the big crash in which Pons fell and Marc Alcoba hit him from behind. Granado, Aegerter, Casadei and Ferrari were well ahead, but the red flag was raised to stop any duel and avoid further incidents.

The race was over and only half of the points would be awarded. Victory for Eric Granado ahead of Aegerter and Casadei, while Ferrari finished fourth.

After three races, the MotoE riders’ championship is beginning to take shape, as well as the fight to be crowned at team level, in a special season at technical level since it will be the last on board the motorcycle developed by Energica, to give entry to Ducati from the next campaign.

However, to arrive at Ducati, the 2022 season must first be finalized, which has left its mark three times after racing at the Circuito de Jerez, LeMans and the Autódromo Internacional de Mugello in what was the Grand Prix of Spain, France and Italy, respectively.

Now, the riders must prepare for the Assen Circuit, for what will be the Grand Prix of the Netherlands to be held on June 26 in conjunction with the MotoGP World Championship, as usual.

About MotoE

MotoE is a new entry in the MotoGP World Championship that emerged in 2019: an all-electric developed series that has been the venue for close racing and spectacular battles at some of motorcycling’s most iconic circuits. The 18 riders have fought at every corner for the title.

The winners of the previous editions were Matteo Ferrari (2019) and two-time World Cup champion Jordi Torres (2020 and 2021); other riders also managed to get on the podium and finish in the top three in the races that have been contested so far.

The MotoE title slipped away from Dominique Aegerter on the last day of last season, after a penalty handed the title to Jordi Torres for the second time in a row. However, the Swiss rider started the current campaign with a bang and showed in Italy that he wants to get rid of the thorn in his side.

The Dynavolt Intact rider shone in the weekend’s double-header, winning Saturday’s race and finishing second on Sunday.

In the first round, Aegerter, who started first in the E-Pole, was able to recover from a loss of positions at the start that favored Andrea Mantovani and Matteo Ferrari to take the first places.

It is worth mentioning that the race had to be shortened to only five laps for safety reasons, so the only possible strategy was to stay ahead and withstand the pressure.

Eric Granado, who had taken the lead, could not maintain his position against Aegerter who believed in the comeback and, after overtaking Mantovani and Ferrari, retook the lead he had earned in qualifying.

Thus, on the last lap, the Swiss was clear that whoever arrived first at the braking of turn 1 had half the race done. He got rid of three riders and increased the pace significantly. This allowed Aegerter to get away enough to tackle the long straight of the transalpine track without losing the first position. Thus, the Swiss was able to win by only 33 thousandths of a second over Ferrari and by two tenths over Mantovani, which allows him to escape in the overall standings.

The Same Players on Sunday

On the second day on Italian soil, Ferrari and Aegerter once again took center stage. The Italian took a decisive lead in the final laps to claim his first victory of the season, while the Swiss rider, fourth on the last lap, moved further ahead in the overall standings with his second place finish.

If on Saturday the competition was reduced to five laps for safety reasons, Sunday was no exception after a chaotic start in which Aegerter did not start as expected and Zannoni took advantage to overtake him. In addition, Mattia Casadei’s crash at the exit of turn one could have complicated things a lot, as his bike remained on the line. Something similar happened with Hikari Okubo, although fortunately there were no major consequences.

For his part, Aegerter began to lose many positions until he was in the middle of the classification, while Ferrari managed to impose itself in the fight for the lead. From there, the Italian began to set a great pace that no one else could follow, allowing him to have a slight but decisive advantage for the victory.

Although the leader remained in the middle of the field for most of the race, he was once again able to pull away and, on the last lap, he put in a spectacular last lap, overtaking three riders to take third place on the Mugello straight. He also took advantage of the breakaway to move up to second place and continue to make his overall lead slip further away.

After the weekend in Italy, Aegerter dominates the standings with 103 points, followed by Granado with 83 and Cassadei with 72.

Mattia Casadei and Dominique Aegerter were the main protagonists of the second round of the MotoE 2022 World Championship, held at Le Mans. Casadei triumphed on Saturday as he dominated the circuit from start to finish.

The race was extremely eventful with crashes for reigning champion Jordi Torres, Xavi Fores and Marc Alcoba. The first of these was taken to the hospital to have his injuries checked.

Amid great pressure from Kevin Zannoni, who was closing dangerously and with eight laps to go, Casadei held firm. Although Dominique Aegerter was also closing in on the frontrunners, the fight for the win was turning into a tussle between the two Italians. In the end, Zannoni fell in his attempt to overtake Casadei, who showed great coolness to withstand the onslaught of his compatriot.

Aegerter benefited from Zannoni’s mistake to take second and Okubo completed the podium of the first MotoE event at Le Mans. Héctor Garzó finished fifth and Miquel Pons sixth.

Sunday Session

In the second round of the French weekend, Aegerter, who had already fought hard on Saturday, was rewarded on Sunday and took the win. The Swiss rider managed the times well to overtake Casadei on the last lap of a race that had been dominated by the Italian.

Unlike the previous day’s start, this time there were no accidents to regret. Casadei started the race very solidly, just as he had done on the first day. Meanwhile, Eric Granado, winner of the double in Jerez, had problems to keep the fourth place at the start, and the ghost of irregularity came back to haunt him.

Casadei knew that with eight laps to go he could repeat the tactic that won him the race on Saturday, but a small blip allowed an incisive Aegerter to take command and cross the finish line first.

With Sunday’s win, the Swiss rider takes the lead with 78 points, eight ahead of Granado, 17 ahead of Casadei and 30 ahead of Ferrari.

Two races, one winner. Eric Granado (LCR E-Team) took top honors during the official debut of the 2022 MotoE season in Spain after dominating with authority on the Circuito de Jerez, and now, he will look to do the same in Le Mans, France, in what will be round 2 of the nascent campaign where Jordi Torres (Pons Racing 40) will try to stop him.

The first two races in Spanish territory left several sensations that outline an interesting battle between Granado and Torres. Both riders have been successful on French territory, so the knowledge of the track, knowing where to attack, defend and move to gain time is part of their repertoire prepared for the battle.

Granado was the only rider to repeat on the podium in Spain, while Torres wasn’t quite right, but his two-time title in the 100% electric motorcycle category will be enough to stand up to Granado, who will have to deal with the fact that the LCR E-Team rider is the most recent winner on French soil.

However, they won’t be alone. Dominique Aegerter (Dynavolt Intact GP MotoE) was solid in Spain with a second and fourth place respectively, as well as being one of the most familiar with the Bugatti circuit at Le Mans. On the other hand, his teammate, Miquel Pons, can be a threat if he can get the full performance out of his bike.

Another rider with experience in the French Grand Prix is Mattia Casadei, Jordi Torres’ teammate, who fought for the victory last season, which he lost in the last corner settling for second place. Now, with a new team, he will try to put all his knowledge of the circuit on the table to fight at the front of the grid.

The race will take place on May 15, with Eric Granado and Jordi Torres as main candidates who will have to be precise not to make mistakes, neither against their direct rival nor the rest of the grid, which is ready to take advantage of any centimeter given to them on the track.

María Herrera is the only woman racing in the MotoE World Championship, so she wants to convey a message through her helmet to remember the struggle suffered by women with breast cancer. The Spanish rider explains in detail what it represents for her.

The color pink is the emblem used to highlight those who fight against this terrible disease. Herrera’s helmet has this color as the main protagonist of the design, with a small bow on top of the visor and the words of encouragement: “strength, fight, support, prevention, optimism and hope”.

The Openbank Aspar Team rider stressed the importance of this message for her, given that she started with the campaign in 2019. “The name was Ángela Vilariño, a close friend. People like the design because it shows support for the girls, plus it’s a color that pleases the eye,” Herrera told MotoE.

Herrera recalled that the first helmet with the aim of sending a message was elaborated in 2019 where she placed the same word of support over the entire structure. “For me it is very valuable because in these moments you have to be very strong, in addition to receiving family support and optimism given that it is a very difficult stage.”

During all her talk with the press team of the 100% electric motorcycle category, Maria stressed how important it is, letting know about the end that a family member died because of this disease, adding a personal cause to the project of support and backing in the fight against breast cancer.

The Grand Prix of Jerez, Spain, was the scene of the first weekend of the 2022 season of the MotoE, a category that deploys the technological electric motorcycles from 2019 and arrives this year with a new format.

Brazilian Eric Granado, LCR Team rider, dominated the Spanish circuit at will and took the double by winning the Saturday and Sunday races. Since 2021, the rider has been one of the main favorites in the series, however, occasional mistakes kept him away from the crown in the previous championship.

This season, Granado strengthened his status as the main contender with a victory in Jerez. On Saturday, the rider was among the leading group for most of the race and on the last lap he managed to reach a gap that allowed him to cross the finish line in first place. Dominique Aegerter and Matteo Ferrari also finished on the podium.

Tech3 E-Racing’s Hector Garzó stayed ahead of the race until turn six/seven, when Mattia Casadei (Pons Racing 40) took the lead.

From that moment on, this group occupying the podium positions began to open a gap that would become less than a second over fourth place, where Granado was.

With five laps to go, the front trio could not escape from Granado, who was trailing his teammate, Miquel Pons. At the same time, Dominique Aegerter (Dynavolt Intact GP MotoE), in fifth place, was able to get very close to Granado and the leading group had five riders in this stage.

With less than three laps to go, the race lead was being disputed between Garzó and Casadei with Granado joining this spectacular fight. On the last corner, but still with three laps to go, Casadei recorded a crash after a dispute with Pons, an incident that was investigated and earned the Spaniard a penalty.

At the front, Granado took the lead to secure and manage a gap of four tenths that earned him the victory.

Granado repeated on Sunday

The second race held in Jerez had practically the same protagonists. With only five laps to go, Aegerter went on the attack to overtake Pons and try to make up ground, but the Spaniard responded forcefully in the Dry Sack braking, while Granado simply waited for his chance to launch the offensive.

After a mistake on the last lap by Aegerter, Granado moved into second and prepared his attack at the right time. The braking at the Dani Pedrosa corner witnessed a spectacular overtake by the Brazilian to take his second consecutive victory. After Saturday’s penalty, Pons was able to finish the race in second place, while Mattia Casadei managed to take third after another mistake by Aegerter in the last corner.

Hikari Okubo; Matteo Ferrari; Jordi Torres; Alex Escrig; Niccolò Canepa; and Kevin Manfredi completed the Top 10 of the second MotoE race in Jerez.

After celebrating the title obtained in 2021, Jordi Torres has turned the page to concentrate on the 2022 MotoE season. The road began with the pre-season free tests held at the Circuito de Jerez, the same that will open the new campaign, and with it, a battle that will have him as the main protagonist.

Ahead of the upcoming season, Jordi Torres talked to the press department of the 100% electric motorcycle category, where he described his participation as “running with a knife in his mouth”. Torres referred to MotoE as the fastest competition he has ever participated in.

However, the challenge of this series has been successfully accepted by the Spaniard, who serves as the brand new two-time champion in the category endorsed by the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme. “Don’t give me a single meter to try to win the race,” says Torres.

“Winning both titles was incredible. No words are able to describe the season before because it was an incredible battle. I think it was amazing, in the last two or three races everything happened,” asserted Torres with a smile on his face that showed satisfaction after successfully fighting a complicated fight.

For the Spaniard, every race is at the limit, where you always have to give 110% of what you have in every straight, corner or overtaking you set out to do. Finding the balance between being extremely competitive without hurting your rival is an important point that Jordi analyzes. Fighting without touching the nearest motorcycle.

2022 for Jordi Torres

“This year it will be more difficult to stay on top, where for sure there can be more fighting, more overtaking. It will be fun, both for the fans and for the riders. It will be the last year with Energica (supplying the official championship bike) where many riders want to be up front.”

Jordi Torres (Photo: MotoE

Keeping the same way he did to conquer the bicampeonato will be the card to play on the part of Torres. Being focused and going step by step to control all the aspects that the riders can handle at will during the races, will Jordi Torres be able to become a three-time MotoE champion in a row?

Giampiero Testoni, Energica’s CTO, provided details about the brand’s farewell in MotoE, as the 2022 season will be the last one where they will serve as official supplier of the category’s motorcycles.

The weight distribution will be different where certain things will be handled differently. The inverter and power unit are the pair of parts Testoni says will be different for the upcoming two-wheeled racing campaign. “The components will provide a totally different feel throughout the bike.”

The changes will come into effect for Energica’s final ride in MotoE. However, there were plans to introduce them earlier, but the coronavirus pandemic changed the Italian manufacturer’s plan, leaving everything for the 2022 campaign, which has been dubbed by Giampiero as “the first big season after the COVID problem.”

In fact, these components that will be seen at the Circuito de Jerez when the action kicks off will be making their racing debut, but they won’t be entirely new since Energica revealed that they have been on street bikes for some time, but still need to be demanded in a more exposed way, which is why they decided to include them in MotoE.

After the last checkered flag to be waved in 2022, Energica will cede its place to Ducati, who months ago was announced as the new supplier of electrified motorcycles, taking a step aside in the sustainable competition endorsed by the FIM, but taking with them hundreds of hours of work, tests and useful information to apply them in their commercial line.

Energica in MotoE

In 2018, Dorna selected Energica as the sole manufacturer for the FIM Enel MotoE FIM World Cup. These all-electric races held at iconic MotoGP circuits across Europe feature 12 international teams, fielding 18 riders mounted on the EGO Corsa. All this led the Italians to perfect the bikes and intensify technological development.

The 2022 MotoE season is wrapping up details to kick off the season in Spanish territory, as Jerez will be the circuit to see the green flag for the first time, on a campaign which will bring important changes explained by Nicolas Goubert, Executive Director of the 100% electric two-wheeled category.

“What we’ve realized so far is that the teams have 30 minutes of testing session, but they haven’t used them fully. So we decided for the upcoming season to have 20-minute sessions. Even for the first day of testing in Jerez we had 15 minutes, just to make sure that the teams are not overloading the batteries, so by the end of the day, they have it in the best possible condition,” he said in an interview for MotoE.

“We still have 18 bikes which is a good number for entertainment, but one of the changes was experienced by Avintia going from two bikes to one. On the other hand, Whitu GRT RNF now has two bikes.”

On the 2022 season motorcycle engine, he also referred: “Yes, that is one of the big novelties of the campaign. We wanted to implement it last year, but the COVID situation prevented us from doing so. New engine and new technology, but the big difference will be the weight, as it is managed to gain 15 kilograms more on the total weight, which will now be at least 247 kilograms.”

“The power and torque of the engine will be the same, in fact, it is very similar to Moto2, but somehow it is still a tremendous change which will be introduced now.”

New Circuits, New Thrills

Leaving behind the technical novelties, Nicolas emphasized the addition of two new circuits to the calendar of the 100% electric two-wheeled competition. “We are going to Mugello, which is one of the most famous circuits in MotoGP. Our sponsors will be happy for us to visit there, you know, Enel X and Energica are Italian so it will be important for them.”

“It will be a challenge for the bikes because the track has a long main straight, where we will see maximum speed, especially with the new engine which can generate a bit more revolutions per minute. Now, the second circuit will be new for everyone and we are also very happy to go to the KymiRing in Northern Europe, in Finland, where people are very passionate about electromobility.”
