Extreme E is just days away from the end of its second season, this time in South American territory, as on November 26-27 Punta del Este will host the last race of the campaign. There, Fraser McConnell has been announced by JBXE as a driver for the closing of the competition in 2022.

Notably, McConnell has served as a championship driver in three races this season, where his opportunity to climb into the ODDYSEY 21 of the 100% electric off-road category has finally arrived. “It’s a great honor to join JBXE for the final round of Extreme E season 2 in Uruguay.

“As a championship driver in the last three rounds, I have been able to see more closely about how all the teams work, so I am very happy to get into the yellow and white JBXE machine alongside Hedda (Hosås). I’m looking forward to getting to know the team and getting some work done.”

New Experience for Fraser McConell

Jamaican-born Fraser McConell impressed in a big way in the North American ARX2 Series after reaching the final four times out of a possible five in 2018, including a podium finish on the final day that served as a preamble to the title achieved in 2019.

He also has experience in the RallyX Nordic Supercar class 2020 where he finished as runner-up, taking experience to beat Johan Kristoffersson in a race at RallyX Nordic in Nysum, Denmark the following year, where coincidentally, he will come up against the Rosberg X Racing driver in Punta del Este, who is fighting for the Extreme E championship.

“I had the pleasure of seeing Fraser in action recently. I couldn’t be happier to have him join JBXE for our last race of the season. Knowing how fast he is, I can’t wait to see him fight in the team colors alongside Hedda!” said JBXE owner Jenson Button.

Jenson Button, former Formula 1 star with his world championship in 2009 and current owner of the Extreme E JBXE team, coincides with his peer, Nico Rosberg, who declared a few days ago that the category is experiencing exponential growth in such a short time of inaugurated.

The Briton believes that it is a matter of time for more manufacturers to join the series of electric sports cars that, in addition to being an attractive competition, has solid environmental protection values.

“It has to be a fantastic playing field for manufacturers to really learn and test their systems. And it’s a fun way to do it,” Button said at a video conference in Los Angeles.

The pioneer brand

The JBXE team is associated with Lotus Engineering, a subsidiary of the British sports car manufacturer. A brand engineer joined Button’s squad last weekend for the second round off the coast of Senegal, in which Button’s men finished in third place.

“It’s really good for Extreme E to have a manufacturer like Lotus and I think it will attract a lot more manufacturers. We will see automakers come into the category, whether it is next year or the next. In addition, it will grow very quickly when we see that happen,” he added.

Lotus, owned by China’s Geely and Malaysia’s Etika Automotive, hopes to sell only electric cars by 2028 with a new plant in the Chinese city of Wuhan and the ‘lifestyle’ models are expected to include an electric SUV.

Group Lotus public relations manager Rob Borrett expected the partnership to be long and said it was about learning for the future. “What better racing series for us from the start than the Extreme E,” he said.

Seat’s Cupra brand, owned by Volkswagen, is the other automaker involved in Extreme E as a technical partner to ABT, based in Germany.

In addition to Button and Rosberg, Lewis Hamilton also has his own team of his, but the JBXE leader is the only one of the three who also competes as a driver.

“For me it’s about learning, I want to do things that are challenging,” Button stressed. “As scary as it is, I still want to race the car.”

“In an F1 car you know the limits. With this thing, it can throw you through a bush. It might be fine, but there might be a giant rock on the other side. It’s definitely a little scarier than F1,” he admitted.

Without a doubt, the start of the Extreme E has pleasantly surprised not only the world of motorsports, but also those who fight every day to have a cleaner environment with the values that the tournament proclaims.

The competition returns next weekend of August 28 and 29 in Greenland.

Extreme E has announced who will be the female representative of the JBXE team. This is the Swedish Mikaela Åhlin-Kottulinsky, incorporation that closes the line-up of the first season of Extreme E.

Mikaela’s name had been linked to the Extreme E for many months, as the driver was part of the tire testing team that Continental developed for racing electric SUVs.

Since then, Åhlin-Kottulinsky had shown interest in “to be the first female champion in Extreme E”,  a wish that it has become a reality and that she will try to carry out with the JBXE team created by the veteran Jenson Button, with whom she will also share the wheel.

In this regard, Button was delighted with the incorporation of Mikaela to the team:  “I am delighted to be welcoming Mikaela to JBXE and to have her as my teammate. She brings with her some fantastic experience behind the wheel and her work with Continental and Extreme E to this point clearly demonstrate what an asset she will be to the team.

“I am delighted to be joining the JBXE team alongside Jenson Button, it feels like a dream come true. Not only do I get to race with such a fantastic team mate, but we both really believe in the platform of the series. Extreme E is more than just another motorsport, it is a sport for purpose which we can use to showcase electric vehicles and motivate people to rethink their views on the consequences of climate change”

Mikaela Åhlin-Kottulinsky, JBXE driver

Alejandro Agag, Founder and CEO of Extreme E, said: “I am delighted to see Mikaela selected for the JBXE team and officially welcome her onboard the adventure as our latest Extreme E driver.”

With the arrival of Mikaela, the Extreme E has closed the list of participating drivers, after the Techeetah team has postponed their entry into the first race due to mobility restrictions that have arisen due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

With 400kw (550hp) of power, 1650 kilograms (3637 pounds) and 2.3 meters wide, the Extreme E flagship vehicle, the Odyssey 21, has perhaps the most relevant characteristics for an electric off-road SUV.

Capable of firing from 0 to 100 km / h in 4.5 seconds, this “sustainable beast” has been manufactured by Spark Racing Technology and its battery was produced by Williams Advanced Engineering.

But beyond meeting demands that probably 5 years ago very few people could contemplate, the Odyssey 21 has an aesthetic that makes practically any fan of motorsport (And not so much) turn to appreciate it.

After each team received their copy in September 2020, each squad started with the changes in smart technology and of course, began to work on the appearance that will differentiate their vehicles from other electric SUVs.

The result? Incredible Odyssey 21s that, despite having a great variety of colors and various changes in the initial design, maintain their wild and imposing appearance.

Below, you can see the list of the off-road of each of the teams so far, considering that less than a month before the start of the first season, the Chip Ganassi Racing team presented a new version, an action that Andretti United XE also carried out shortly before mid-February.

ANDRETTI UNITED

CHIP GANASSI RACING

HISPANO SUIZA XLTE

It is important to mention that to date, the Techeetah team has not announced any model of its vehicle or drivers.

It is important to mention that the Odyssey 21s will meet for the first time on April 3 and 4 in the Al-Ula desert of Saudi Arabia, in a race that will be broadcast in dozens of countries.
