A few months few months ago, the U.S. company Segway introduced a prototype of a electric motorcycle powered by a hydrogen fuel cell with a launch date of 2023. Plans are to bring it to market before the end of that year, but until then the full-scale model had not been seen. However, the brand finally revealed how its design looks like brought to reality.

The electric motorcycle is called Apex H2 and its main mechanical feature is the environmentally friendly fuel system. However, its fully aerodynamic, futuristic and sporty design ( MotoE style), also figure as attractive presentation cards for its commercialization.

The concept shown in the past came as a surprise. Some people thought it might be changed by Segway, but the company’s engineers decided to stick with that sketch by retaining the radical features of the two-wheeler. The hydrogen storage tank and handlebars are virtually identical to the digital version.

The single-arm double swingarm geometry is evident on the electric bike’s design for the two suspensions. However, they cannot be fully, or deeply, appreciated, as they are located on the right side of the Apex H2, and the photographs revealed by Segway show the left profile most prominently.

The motorcycle’s specifications call for 60 kW (80 horsepower) and a top speed of 150 kilometers per hour. At the moment the autonomy is unknown, although the brand reported that the average consumption is one gram of hydrogen per kilometer traveled. Its price in China will be 69,999 yuan, which translates to 9,400 euros or 10,900 dollars approximately.

Electric mobility is spreading to all corners of the world, and is now reaching important areas of society. The existence of vehicles with this technology is no longer limited to urban rides or sports competitions, but military forces from different countries are also appealing to innovation.

In Australia, soldiers are testing the use of high-powered electric bicycles for military functions, focusing on silent scouting missions.

Troops from the Queensland Mounted Infantry Light Horse Regiment are testing these high-powered vehicles, although few would consider them bicycles, considering they can reach high speeds.

Some have functional pedals, but are capable of exceeding 80 kilometers per hour during acceleration-only operation. Those high levels are made possible by an impressive 6.2 kW motor. Electric bikes can be pedal-powered by a 9-speed gearbox built around the bottom bracket, where many would traditionally hold a mid-drive motor.

Model

The precise description of the electric bike has not been officially released by the Australian military, but features indicate that it is the B-52 range from Australian company Stealth Electric Bikes.

They weigh 51 kg, carry 2 kWh batteries and rated for ranges up to 100 km on a single charge, but at slower speeds. At a power output of 50 km / h, they produce only 65 dB of sound. That’s well below the audible signature of a gasoline-powered motocross bike. They can be more easily mounted on a truck or other military vehicle, and even pedaled backwards if the battery runs out of power.

Raising Institutional Awareness

Thomas Ovey, a corporal with the Queensland Mounted Infantry noted that “the footprint is minimized due to less power, less noise and it’s not kicking up a lot of dust that could be seen by enemy forces. It’s much more efficient than a standard motorcycle. They’ll call us in, we’ll get the motorcycles out, head over there and get the information.”

“We cover larger territory much faster and it saves time instead of waiting for troops to come to us when they’ve found something. It’s easier to get the electric bikes out and back,” he added.

It is worth noting that the use of these vehicles by military forces is expanding, since New Zealand and Norway’s armies have already carried out tests. In addition, mainly in Europe, police forces have relied on this technology for their security work.

Although recent e-bike launches may have some similarities, powerful mid-drive electric mopeds are still a rarity and for that reason the new Ristretto e-bike is even more interesting.

It is not your typical electric moped, with its large 26 ″ diameter wheels and a more traditional bike style frame.

The Ristretto electric bike has power, offering speeds of up to 45 kilometers per hour (28 mph) in Class 3 mode or 64 kilometers per hour (40 mph) when unlocked. However, that unlocked mode may not be legal on public streets, depending on the local moped laws where you are.

To get the bike up to those speeds, there’s a CYC mid-drive motor rated at up to 3,500 watts (4.7 horsepower).

Both the front and rear suspension include preload, rebound and compression adjustments.

The bright LED lighting on the Ristretto is definitely of the “see” variety, not just the typical “be seen” lights found on basic electric bikes. The company claims the headlights provide 100 yards (91 meters) of forward visibility.

Battery and autonomy

The 52V battery offers up to 88 kilometers (55 miles) of range. The maximum range was probably calculated using the bike’s pedaling assist at lower speeds.

Pedaling the 38 kilogram (84 pound) bike may seem like a difficult task, however it includes a Shimano 11-speed drivetrain that should make the task a bit easier.

The Ristretto also includes a smartphone app that allows riders to make adjustments to riding parameters as well as an optional GPS tracking update as an add-on that would allow riders to track their bike in the app if it is stolen.

Ristretto 303 FS is now crowdfunding on IndieGoGo and it has already proven to be a success – the seed funding goal has been reached and the campaign is still 28 days more online.

The Ristretto Electric company is the result of groundbreaking breakthroughs among Atelier & tonic’s scientific and technological advances. It also focuses on design and uses innovations in electric transportation, especially in the electric bike industry.

The French company, Valeo with its Smart e-Bike system is the first solution in the world that integrates an electric motor and an adaptive automatic transmission in the pedal set.

But how do they work? What benefits does it offer?

The adaptive automatic transmission uses an algorithm to understand and instantly adapt to the needs of each person, taking into consideration their driving style. The gears change smoothly, without pressing buttons or levers similar to the advantages of cars in terms of automatic gearboxes.

With this new electric assistance system, the bike adapts to the rider and not the other way around. The gears change automatically and the algorithms of the system adapt instantly to the amount of electric assistance that the rider needs from the first pedal stroke.

Valeo’s technology developed in partnership with Effigear comprises a 48V electric motor, a torque of 130 Newton per meter that can also increase the rider’s effort by eight.

It may also interest you: EVR Motors develops lighter motor that reduces production costs of electric vehicles

Valeo’s electric assist allows a rider with a load of 150 kilograms to climb a 14% incline (the equivalent of a parking ramp) without much effort.

The Valeo Smart e-Bike system includes an anti-theft function built directly into the pedal assembly which, when activated, blocks use of the bike. It also features a pedestrian push assist feature, which is particularly useful when hauling heavy loads, and a push feature that makes it easy to pass other cyclists and climb hills.

With this technology, the French company reaffirms itself as the main player in electric mobility.

More about Valeo

Valeo is a supplier to the automotive sector, a partner of all manufacturers in the world that offers innovative systems and equipment for the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions (57% of Valeo sales are based on components for sustainable mobility) and develops technologies for more intuitive handling such as the Smart e-Bike.

HPS, a company based in Monaco that focuses their activity on the development of high-performance systems with sports applications, presents the electric bicycle with the lowest weight on the market.

This is the “HPS Domestique 1-21”, an electric road bike that has a weight not seen until now.

It has been created, according to the company, without any kind of commitment to be able to reach the numbers that surround it.

Related content: New breakthrough for hydrogen vehicles: create paste to power the fuel cell

The objective of the designers was to manufacture an electric bicycle that behaved like a high-performance non-electric bicycle, and in this the extra weight that the electrical system adds. Even so, the deployment of technology has served so that the weight of the HPS Domestique is only 8.6 kilos (18,9 pounds).

Its name, Domestique, is a tribute to the cyclists who play the supporting role within a team without any sporting aspiration, since their role is none other than serving their teammates.

Within the electric bicycle itself, the role of “domestique” is played by the electrical system itself, giving support to the cyclist at specific times when they need it.

To develop an ultralight frame, the Monegasque firm turned to a company with great experience in the field, such as “Campagnolo”.

The geometry of the Domestique is made by hand and under the requirements of HPS itself. Being a limited edition of electric bicycles, the 21 units that the company will sell are reflected in the same table.

Given that the role of the electrical system is called to be merely punctual, since the cyclist will only go to it when their strength diminishes, the firm does not announce any autonomy or battery capacity, so it must be a restrained size, also logical keeping in mind that the goal of the whole set is to be light. What they do advance is that it is capable of attending for more than three hours in a row in a continuous climb.

The battery is not located inside the frame, as is usual in high-end electric bicycles, but is attached like a support as if it were a bottle of energy drink.

The electric motor, yields 200 W of power and avoiding to affect the performance of the cyclist, it only has 20 Nm of torque. It is located on the bottom bracket, it is tiny and very light, with a weight / power ratio of 1.33 W per kilo.

The HPS Domestique is right now the only electric bicycle that the company has in its product portfolio, and it has a cost of 12,000 euros.

The engineering behind the creation has even counted on Formula 1 experts to end up with a result that has its greatest appeal in its weight.
