The competition to win a place in the automotive electric section is not simple. First Tesla is the undisputed leader, then the rest of the brands struggle to offer models that captivate the attention of consumers. One such company is Volvo, which plans to engage its customers through safety.

Safety is an aspect of broad importance to Volvo, in fact, they define it as “core to our purpose as a company.” Jim Rowan, CEO of the company, assures that the firm has been a leader in automotive safety for almost 100 years. However, what is yet to be seen thanks to the Volvo EX90 will reach the next level.

This car will be the company’s first fully electrified flagship SUV, which will exceed safety standards with luxury details compared to any other car of the brand. “We will continue to innovate until cars stop crashing, until we are 100 percent carbon-free as a company,” Volvo assures.

Volvo EX90 Safety Details

Volvo’s safety system has been targeted to combat a sensation that all human beings experience, and that can happen while driving: fatigue. The company’s program transcends to the next level after assuring that it will come equipped with “an invisible safety shield that includes its latest sensing technology, allowing the vehicle to understand the driver’s state of mind along with the world around them.”

To this end, state-of-the-art sensors such as cameras, radar and LiDAR, powered by Volvo’s central computing platform, will be added to generate a full 360-degree view. In addition, the company asserts that its system is not distracted for a millisecond, being able to detect roads in front of the driver or small objects hundreds of meters away to inform, act and avoid accidents.

“Our software and sensors can help reduce accidents resulting in serious injury or death by up to 20%. Similarly, we estimate that we can even improve overall accident prevention by up to 9%,Volvo says.

Internally, the Volvo EX90 will be able to measure gaze concentration by means of proprietary algorithms that act through cameras and sensors. Its intelligence will even allow it to detect when the driver is distracted or tired. If this scenario occurs, the system will alert the person by gently pushing him/her, and if he/she does not respond, it will do so more insistently if necessary.

Finally, the company says it will reveal details in the coming weeks, before the official unveiling of the Volvo EX90 on November 9, 2022.

Being climate neutral by 2040 and manufacturing 100% electric vehicles by 2030 are two of the premises of Volvo Cars to contribute to environmental protection and adherence to new technologies in all its operations.

To achieve these goals, the company has announced a number of measures that seek to strengthen the production capacity sustainably and allocate large amounts of financial resources.

Volvo has decided to invest an astronomical 960 million euros to upgrade the Torslanda plant in Sweden, with the goal of intensifying the production of electric vehicles. The plan seeks to offer advanced production practices that include a mega foundry for aluminum body parts, a new battery assembly plant, among others.

The information comes just days after the European manufacturer communicated plans to build a 50 GWh battery plant, with the help of cell company Northvolt.

Old-established Complex

The Torslanda plant has an annual production capacity of 300,000 cars and remains one of Volvo Cars’ longest-running manufacturing plants since it opened in 1964.

With the aforementioned investment, the plant’s logistics areas will also be remodeled to optimize the transport of goods and spare parts within the plant. The company will also allocate resources to nearby facilities such as rest areas, dressing rooms and offices, in order to improve the working environment for all employees.

New plans to refurbish the complex will allow the casting of the main parts from a single piece of aluminum to reduce weight, while strengthening the structural integrity and improving the energy efficiency of the vehicles to allow for greater autonomy.

Regarding current production, Volvo explained that although it is gradually improving, deliveries to dealers have been delayed by the increase of vehicles in transit. They detail that the supply chain situation continues to be smooth, but component shortages remain a constraining factor for the automotive sector.

Volvo’s eye-catching investments appear to be a sensible bet, as in the European market the Swedish group’s sales of plug-in cars between electric and hybrid total 9,926 units, representing more than 50%.

Volvo Cars CEO Håkan Samuelsson assured that with these investments, the company is moving towards an all-electric future and they are preparing for even more advanced and better electric Volvos.

“Torslanda is our largest plant and will play a crucial role in our ongoing transformation as we move towards becoming a pure electric car manufacturer by 2030,” he said.

The number of kilometers covered by electric vehicles has become almost an obsession for large manufacturers, eager for technologies that can increase the range of these machines.

One of the companies working towards this goal is Volvo, that has created the new “Range Assistant” application to offer advice and assistance to drivers with the objective of achieving maximum battery efficiency.

Additionally, the Swedish company is rolling out its latest over-the-air (OTA) software update to their cars to help improve range and efficiency in multiple ways. This includes intelligent battery management and a preconditioning timer.

How the System Works

OTA updates are those delivered and downloaded wirelessly. They are issued remotely from a cloud-based server, over a cellular or WiFi connection, to a connected vehicle. It is the same process as a smartphone or laptop restore.

Due to their familial relationship with the automobile, Volvo electrics and associated brand Polestar, are based on the same platform and feature much of the same technology. This includes OTA software capabilities that started in late 2020.

With the latest modernization in place, Volvo Group delivers previously promised improvements to the range and efficiency of their vehicles, one of the ongoing benefits of substantial upgrades.

What’s New

The Scandinavian manufacturer shared details of their latest OTA software overhaul. The system, which they call Infotainment, will now include a beta version of Range Assistant built-in automatically.

Sanela Ibrovic, Head of Connected Experience at Volvo Cars noted that “through internal software development and wireless updates, we can constantly improve our cars and make sure your electric Volvo stays up to date. The Range Assistant app is a great example of how quickly developing and implementing new features can improve the Volvo customer experience every day.”

She said the tool will give drivers an accurate indication of the estimated range remaining on a trip and offer real-time energy consumption data, helping them understand the key factors affecting range.

In addition, the new beta application features a range optimization function that can automatically adjust the climate system to improve the autonomy of an electric vehicle.

The OTA software update is rolling out now to XC40 Recharge owners and should be complete by the end of this month.

Swedish automaker, Volvo reported through a virtual event that its goal is to be a global fully electric car company by 2030 and will launch a portfolio of new products in the coming years.

As part of its new strategy, Volvo Cars will invest heavily in its online sales channels, a more comprehensive, attractive and transparent consumer offering under the name “Care by Volvo”.

“To remain successful, we need profitable growth. So instead of investing in a shrinking business, we choose to invest in the future — electric and online,” said Volvo’s chief executive Håkan Samuelsson, adding that the company is focused on becoming leaders in the premium electric segment of fast growth.

The first electric car of the brand was presented in different markets around the world last year and at the beginning of March the second, the Volvo C40 Recharge model, was presented. During the next few years Volvo Cars will launch several electric models, and by 2025, they aim for 50% of their global sales to be of these cars, with the rest hybrids. By 2030, all cars on the market must be fully electric.

About the Volvo C40 Recharge

The most recent model of the brand reaffirms the Volvo Cars path, and is that the C40 Recharge has all the benefits of an SUV, but with a lower, elegant and electric design.

The propulsion consists of two electric motors, one on the front axle and one on the rear axle, powered by a 78 kWh battery that can be quickly charged to 80% in about 40 minutes.

It also offers an expected range of around 420 km, which is expected to improve over time through wireless software updates.

The C40 Recharge will go into production this fall and will be built alongside the XC40 Recharge at Volvo Cars’ manufacturing plant in Ghent, Belgium.
