After an exciting weekend in Mexico, Formula E moved to the Middle East for the Diriyah E-Prix, where Pascal Wehrlein stood above the rest during the weekend of competition.

On Saturday 27th, the first race of the weekend took place, corresponding to Round 2 of the 100% electric single-seater category. There, the German Porsche driver qualified in ninth place, making his way to the front of the race to finish on the top of the podium.

Two precise activations of the Attack Mode allowed the driver to take the lead. The decisive move was made around turn 16 of the circuit on lap 30, leaving Sam Bird in his wake.

Jack Dennis tried to fight off Pascal Wehrlein, but could not in the face of the great driving displayed by the Porsche man in Diriyah, taking his second win in the category, his first of the year and his maiden victory in a Gen3 car.

Wehrlein Wins in Diriyah

The excitement of the first race in Diriyah is behind us. Green light for the second race in the Middle East. However, Pascal Wehrlein did not allow things to be different in the third E-Prix of the season after taking top honors again.

This time he started from fifth position, instead of ninth as he had done in Race 1, defining Turn 16 as the preferred overtaking point, since there he overtook two rivals in consecutive laps to start the ascent to victory.

In a short time, the German Porsche driver was leading Round 3 of Formula E, taking a significant lead that confirmed the good moment of the team and the driver shown since last season.

In this way, consecutive wins by Pascal Wehrlein leave him at the top of the drivers’ world championship, six points ahead of Jack Dennis. In addition, it is worth noting that Porsche powertrains finished 1-2 in all races so far in the 2022/23 season, showing the power of the brand for campaign 9.

Finally, the 100% electric single-seater category action will return next February 11 for Round 4 in Hyderabad, India, where it has become clear that the rest of the grid will have to watch out for Pascal Wehrlein and Porsche.

“It took time, it took a long time, but finally in Mexico, it was the best race I could have imagined”, with these words, Pascal Wehrlein expressed himself after taking victory on the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez track during the third round of the ABB FIA Formula E in Mexico.

Since his Formula 1 career, the German’s name has been heard loudly in global motorsport. Unfortunately for his interests, he was part of Marussia (Manor), the weakest team on the grid at the time. All the potential he had was never able to be shown at 100% during his period in the Grand Circus.

Wehrlein established himself as one of the most skilled driver of the electric single-seater category, but success was elusive. That all changed with TAG Heuer Porsche last weekend. A true exhibition of driving and good judgment when saving energy led the driver to cross the checkered flag in first place at the e-Prix of Mexico.

A heartbreaking overtake in 2019, also in Aztec territory, denied the driver from winning. In 2021, the same thing happened in Puebla, but this time a disqualification kept him from being able to stand on top of the podium despite finishing 1st. However, he kept working and finally the moment of redemption arrived at the eighth season of the series.

However, Pascal not only made history of his own, he was also responsible for raising the name of the German manufacturer in the 100% electric single-seater category, as it also represented the first triumph as a team.

“It’s really satisfying. With all the history I have here in Mexico, it feels amazing to have the first win for me here, but also for the team. The car was amazing and also Andre (Lotterer, who came in second) did a great job. Today was our day, so let’s celebrate,” said Wehrlein.

The race strategy made it clear that the car has the potential to be a major player in the category. Now, the table is set to move the action to Rome, where the German team will certainly not be looked at in the same way, and those who once doubted them will not do so again.

The Puebla E-Prix left Porsche’s Tag Heuer Force team with a good feeling about the performance of its drivers. If not for controversial disqualifications at the Miguel E Abed racetrack, the team’s drivers would have dominated the weekend on Mexican soil.

Once the page turned, both Pascal Wehrlein and Andre Lotterer will be looking to get rid of the thorn and will arrive to Brooklyn with the clear objective of scoring points after the good performance they have had so far in Formula E’s “season seven”.

“On New York’s streets we will be especially motivated and stronger than Puebla,” said Amil Lindase, Porsche’s operations manager. “We are ready for the start and we want to finally get our first victory.”

“We left Puebla with the conviction we could finish a race from the start and win it. This gives us lots of positive energy and extra motivation to continue with determination on the common track and we showed it,” he added.

He explained that if not for the controversial decisions that took them out from top positions in Mexico, Lindase assured that they would be “on top.” “We all did a great job in Puebla, of course we deserve this first win,” he said.

No matter how disappointing it is at first, we have to keep working and try to take the next opportunities. We scouted the events in Puebla. We will do our best to get the most out of our set. If we can do that, we’ll be strong again like we were in Puebla

Amil Lindase, Porsche

Hopes set on Brooklyn

Regarding the team drivers’ experience on U.S. soil, Lindase noted, “The New York City E-Prix is really new for the team, but Andre and Pascal have already competed there. Their experiences play a key role in our production. Although this route is new for us, we hope we will take the spot we left in Mexico.”

Meanwhile, Porsche driver Andre Lotterer said the New York race is a great track to look forward to after frustration in Mexico. “Puebla was not an easy weekend for me. It was difficult not knowing what was going on.”

“We certainly gathered a lot of data and looked at what was good and what was not. It was a build-up for New York. I hope things get better for me again. The whole team is behind and very focused. That has to work,” he added.

Some changes to the layout and the city’s weather may be key factors in the competition’s outcome. “The feeling of driving on street is finally coming back to New York,” Lotterer pointed out. “The track is a little bumpy, so you need a good chassis. We have to adapt our car if we want to take advantage and come out on top, he concluded.

The German brand, Porsche, has withdrawn its appeal against the disqualification of the driver Pascal Wehrlein from the first race in Puebla, in which he achieved the first victory of the squad in Formula E.

In practice, Wehrlein was the first to cross the finish line of the track in Mexico with a display on how to control pole position. However, shortly after the checkered flag, both Porsches along with Sebastien Buemi and Oliver Rowland’s Nissans were excluded from the results, giving di Grassi his first Formula E victory in two years.

The series described that both Porsche and Nissan did not declare the assignment of their tires in their technical passports, which prevented the official supplier Michelin from “performing the necessary pressure management checks”.

Formula E co-founder Alejandro Agag spoke about the result of the race and said he was “so angry” with the penalty that he made him “want to kill someone.”

Porsche tried to appeal against the disqualification, noting that the sanction was “too harsh” on the grounds that the German team did not gain any performance advantage as a result of the “non-declaration”.

However, nine days after the Puebla race, Porsche has decided to withdraw its appeal against disqualification, although it does not agree with the measure.

“We remain firmly convinced that the penalty does not fit the offense and it still really hurts that we were denied our first Formula E victory at the Puebla E-Prix,” the statement from Porsche said.

The Germans indicated that they will continue to work hard, learning from their mistakes to improve in the category. In that sense, the firm expects the same approach from Formula E and the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA).

“For Porsche, it is important to identify further potential in the championship and to support Formula E with the goal of providing great motor racing – particularly for the fans. It is not in our interest to get involved in a protracted process and thus do damage to Formula E and the corresponding environment,” he said.

It should be noted that Wehrlein was also penalized for improper use of the fanboost system by activating the short burst of power too late when it did not have enough usable power left to reach the minimum level of 240 kW, as prescribed in article 37.4 of the sporting regulations.

The Tag Heuer Porsche team did not have a good weekend in terms of results in Puebla, but the performance of the drivers left good feelings to rescue in the Mexican E-Prix.

After winning the qualifying stage on Saturday, Pascal Wehrlein was disqualified due to a controversial tire registration error. The German driver tried to recover on Sunday by reaching second place, however, he received a new penalty for not using all the available power in the so-called fanboost. The measure placed him in fourth place in the race.

“We were very strong all weekend. We took a giant step compared to the last race. I really like that. My relationship with the team is improving race by race,” Wehrlein said after the competition.

“I understand how I can be even faster with the Porsche 99X Electric and the team understands how I would like the car to be. We can be proud of the progress we are making together. First and second in the classification, first and second in the race; without the disqualification and the penalty, now we would be in front of the championship,” added the German.

On his part, André Lotterer, the other Porsche driver, also had a solid participation that unfortunately was diluted by a touch with a rival that relegated him. Despite this, the work done and the behavior of the cars makes the team excited for the upcoming challenges.

“I started and was very happy with the car. But then, in a minor collision, a plastic tape from a billboard stuck to my underbody, negatively affecting the car’s handling, especially in fast corners. Unfortunately that was the end of the race for me,” lamented Lotterer.

Good sensations

The mistakes that played against Porsche over the weekend do not discourage the squad and they already position themselves as one of the rivals to beat in the series. This was assured by Amiel Lindesay, director of operations of the team. “Apart from the disqualification and the penalty, it was a very profitable weekend for us. We made great progress, although this was not reflected in the final results,” he said.

“On Saturday we showed that we can win races and on Sunday we confirmed our good performance. Pascal had an incredibly efficient race. At first he lost positions, but he regained them and then put pressure on the leader for many laps,” added the manager.

Lindesay noted that “the penalty, unfortunately, left him off the podium. André was able to regain positions after the start, but the incident in the race unbalanced the car and made him lose any option to finish higher.”

Although it is true that the Puebla racetrack received several criticisms from some drivers, it is important to note that it was the first of the year to have an audience and great color. In addition, it had a beneficial meaning, since the proceeds obtained from the sale of the 10,000 tickets went to the Mexican health system.

Porsche will have a rematch in a few weeks when the New York E-Prix takes place on the weekend of July 10 and 11, corresponding to the seventh season of Formula E.

Another race, another winner in Formula E, this time was the driver Lucas di Grassi who took the first E-Prix of Mexico this weekend and the third in his private race. The Brazilian ranked second until the last moment when Porsche driver Pascal Wehrlein was disqualified after dominating from start to finish on Mexican soil.

The German could say that he arrived first but the joy lasted seconds while they confirmed the sanction for a technical failure of Porsche: not declaring the race tires.

On the other hand, the race that took place at the Autodromo Miguel E. Abed will be remembered by the Audi team, as the German squad achieved as many points as possible with first place from di Grassi and second from René Rast.

It should be noted that di Grassi had already been crowned in the races that were held at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, in Mexico City, in its 2016 and 2018 editions.

Now the Brazilian is recovering after a rough start that he himself confirmed as the worst of his career and is less than 30 points behind the leadership of Robin Frijns who did not score (17th). Closer is René Rast with 58 units four from the top.

The start of the event was difficult for the French rider, Jean-Eric Vergne, who had to dodge Oliver Rowland in the first minutes, who was stopped for a few seconds on the track.

Misfortune came to the DS Techeetah team with the retirement of Vergne after a contact that pressed the left side of his chassis against the wall causing irreparable damage that took the two-time champion of the category of the top five of the race.

However, the one who would cause the safety car to leave for a period of seven minutes was Nick Cassidy after suffering an accident against one of the walls. In the same way, there was a clash between the British Sam Bird and Alexander Lynn, the latter without major problems to finish tenth in the classification.

Nick de Vries, one of the leaders on the podium of the series, had a mishap the moment the race reached half its distance as the Mercedes one went long in one of the curves and descended to the position 19.

Teams table

With the results of this Saturday, Audi Sport accumulates 97 points and reaches the fourth position, cutting the difference with the first in the series, Mercedes, which has 113 units after eight rounds.

The action will return this Sunday with the ninth round of the campaign and waiting for more surprises from the electric cars.

At only 26 years old, Pascal Wehrlein accumulates a lot of experience in the automotive world at the competition level. His age does not reflect at all the maturity that he has had behind the wheel in all the categories that he has participated, managing to show his talent and potential until he established himself firmly in the FIA Formula E.

Born on October 18, 1994, in Germany, this pilot started from a very young age to show his talent as a pilot, quickly generating that the media spotlights will move to his shoulders to evaluate and closely follow his performances in order to discover up to where it could go in the racing universe.

Like almost all competitors, Pascal Wehrlein started karting in 2004. There, he spent a few years showing his worth, adapting his driving style by learning new things to forge a path of success. However, it was not until 2010 when Pascal Wehrlein decided to make the leap towards single-seaters, with the ADAC Formula Masters being the selected category, managing to establish himself as a brand new champion in the following campaign.

In 2013 he moved on to the DTM, climbing higher and higher and making his name sound on the competitive landscape. Already in 2014 he achieved an unprecedented milestone after becoming the youngest driver to win a race in that category (20 years) while defending the HWA team colors. A year later he accomplished what he had achieved in the past and finished champion after registering two victories, two second places and a third place.

Formula 1

Faced with such a notch of talent, Formula 1 was not long in coming for Pascal Wehrlein, that same year where he won the DTM, Mercedes looked for him to stamp his signature with the Silver Arrows as a test driver, participating in the pre-season free trials carried out at the Circuit de Catalunya, Barcelona.

However, his talent could not continue to play a secondary role, therefore, in 2016 he became the starting driver for Escudería Manor, which was the weakest in the championship, but still excelled on the track and scored his first point in the top championship of motorsport during the Austrian Grand Prix after finishing tenth. In 2018 he was called up again by Mercedes, but this time as a development driver, leaving the team and the category at the end of the year.

The 2018-2019 season was Pascal Wehrlein’s first in FIA Formula E under the orders of the Mahindra Racing team, winning a pole position, two fastest laps and a podium that allowed him to continue with that team in the 2019-2020 campaign, but he was replaced by Alex Lynn after the first five E-Prix. However, his journey in the electric category did not end, as he was called by TAH Heuer Porsche to replace Neel Jani in the current harvest where he appears in the 12th box of the championship with 32 units.
