eSkootr Championship (eSC) prepared for months for the arrival of the 100% electric scooter series. Unique in the racing sector, it expounded its views on sustainability, micromobility, racing and safety, all together within a concept that managed to quickly catch on with motorsports fans.

The category was founded in 2019 by Hrag Sarkissian and Khalil Beschir with the intention of promoting sustainability, but beyond that, it sought to showcase a new way of looking at scooters and micromobility, using sport as a platform for momentum and visibility.

The championship concept has the footprint of Alex Würz, former Formula 1 driver, co-founder and safety ambassador of eSC, while Lucas di Grassi also serves as co-founder, as well as sustainability ambassador for the series.

Entertaining Format

Ten teams made up the 2022 season of the category, with each team having three drivers at its disposal split between men and women for each event. The race format was based on a knockout series with the top 4 advancing to the quarterfinals. After that, the top three secured a ticket to the semifinals.

Subsequently, the top three in the semifinals competed for glory in the finals, with a total of 11 drivers in the decisive stage of each weekend. There, they worked under the format of a drivers’ championship and a teams’ championship.

The first race was held in London, the city selected to host the debut of the eSkootr Championship, reflecting a 600-meter course, which went in and out of Printworks London, seeing how the S1-X transited at more than 100 kilometers per hour.

Indeed, S1-X was the official name of the electric racing scooter, developed by YCOM, capable of reaching the aforementioned speed, equipped with a 1.33 kWh battery, flax fiber bodywork, weighing 40 kilograms in total and tilting capacity of up to 55°.

Matis Neyroud made history as the first winner of an eSkootr Championship race, Sara Cabrini also shone as the first woman to win a race in the series, while, finally, Aymard Vernay remained forever in the history books as the first champion.

The eSkootr Championship (eSC) will return to action during the month of November after announcing the return of the series for two races in France to mark the end of the 2022 debut season.

The 100% electric scooter category is currently on hold after two races (London and Sion). On the way to the third event, the championship was suspended, so the organizers had to readjust the calendar.

However, the weeks went by without knowing when eSC would return, until now. The inaugural season will close with a double race at the mythical Paul Ricard circuit on November 9 and 10.

“I can’t wait for this double header to take place and to be able to crown the first winner of the eSkootr Championship. After the exciting races we’ve already had, I have no doubt that the title showdown at Paul Ricard will be just as exciting,” said Hrag Sarkissian, CEO and Co-Founder of eSC.

The circuit will be perfect for the closing of the eSkootr Championship as it is the first track to receive the FIA’s Sustainability Accreditation top honor award, making it an ideal place to compete and end a season that seeks to promote micro-mobility and sustainable transport through sport.

Two races contested so far but with a long way to go. eSkootr Championship has been known for its sustainable commitment from the moment its creation was announced, now, after months of preparation and two battles held in London and Sion, respectively, the electric scooter division has been awarded triple silver recognition through the Climate Neutral Now initiative of the United Nations (UN).

This distinction recognizes the category’s efforts in measuring, reducing and offsetting greenhouse gas emissions, where the initiative aims to encourage companies and organizations to better understand their carbon footprint in order to create measures and plans that contribute to reducing their impact on the planet.

There are three levels of recognition: Bronze, Silver and Gold, where the program is supported by companies and organizations such as Microsoft, Sony, Juventus Football Club, SailGP and the ABB FIA Formula E. In the case of eSkootr Championship, it has been part of Climate Neutral Now since February 2021.

The silver award has highlighted the emissions reduction strategy with interim targets for the upcoming seasons of the series and carbon footprint offsetting in the inaugural campaign.

“Creating a sustainable sport that can have a real-world impact is one of the key areas of focus for eSC, so achieving a triple silver award from the UNFCCC in the first year is a great moment in our development,” said Hrag Sarkissian, Co-Founder and CEO of eSkootr Championship.

One of the series’ challenges has been to promote safety values, encourage micromobility and drive home the critical role that these types of vehicles will play in terms of transportation, both now and in the future, where a report to be published by the end of June 2022 on the lifecycle of the S1-X, the official scooter of the championship, will be highlighted.

“The eSC triple silver award is a testament to our strong data-driven sustainability strategy. We want to use the power of sport to implement change and we set out with the goal of working towards a greener and healthier environment for all,” said Lucas di Grassi, Co-Founder and Sustainability Ambassador of the championship.

30 riders gave everything in the eSkootr Championship (eSC) official debut, the 100% electric scooter category began in London, United Kingdom, under a spectacular atmosphere that marked the beginning of a new sustainable competition that has everything to be one of the pioneers as far as sustainable motor sports are concerned.

Under a unique and challenging format, 10 teams jumped into Printworks London to go through a demanding circuit that complicated more than one rider, where a couple of them suffered falls while trying to take the S1-X, the competition’s official scooter, to the maximum performance. Besides, a great overtaking was part of the 2022 season opening race.

However, Matis Neyroud (PLYR:1) secured his name in the series’ history books after becoming eSkootr Championship first race winner. In second place came the British Dan Brooks (Nico Roche Racing), while the podium was completed by the Indian Anish Shetty (Carlin).

The format

10 teams, 30 drivers, one championship. Six qualifying rounds opened the first race of the season with five drivers in each. The last of each heat were eliminated, leaving the track for the remaining 24 towards the quarterfinals. There, a new group of six riders race against each other, where the top 3 advanced to the semifinals.

12 drivers topped the semi-finals, separates over two rounds, from six competitors battling it out for the top three, again, with the goal of securing a ticket into the six-driver race final. Already in the decisive instance, Neyroud had been the most agile to become the eSC first winner.

The road to the official debut of eSkootr Championship is getting closer. Technical details and sporting aspects have been sealed, but the championship protagonists are still to be known. After the revelation of the pilots who will compete on track, it was impossible to ignore Elise Christie.

Multiple World Champion and former speed skater of the Great Britain team. A specialist in the 1000 meter event, where she won titles in that category, in addition to the 1500 meters. She also won the overall gold medal, the first British and European woman to achieve that milestone.

At 31 years old, she is ready for a totally different speed adventure, as after intense testing she was selected by the eSkootr Championship team, where she will be part of history as one of the riders to compete in the inaugural campaign of the 100% electric scooter category.

This time, the skates were left aside, now, the main weapon will be the S1-X, a 100% electrified scooter of 35 kilos capable of exceeding 100 kilometers per hour (62 mph). Christie will compete for the absolute glory of the category against 29 rivals who will give everything to conquer the championship.

“It’s an amazing feeling to say I’m a professional eSkootr driver. When I first heard about the sport and after having conversations with eSC, I began to realize what a great opportunity I could be a part of something so special. Judging by the evidence, the racing will be awesome, but it’s also the championship’s vision of using sport as a platform for more sustainable mobility in cities that I’m proud to be a part of,” said Elise Christie.

“From competing on roller skates, I enjoy racing close to other competitors and I think fans will be surprised at how close we are on the track at eSC. That, combined with the speed and the 55° angle of incline, will make for incredible viewing and I can’t wait to get out there to race at Printworks in a few weeks,” she finished.

eSkootr Championship has generated multiple reactions since it was announced its entry into the sustainable motorsports world, as the intention to make a difference, coupled with the fact of using an ‘atypical’ vehicle for racing, quickly attracted attention. However, to date, the names of the main protagonists were unknown.

Several months went by that included important revelations. High-caliber hires, format, technical specifications of the scooters and locations where they will be raced, were part of the news that eSC unveiled little by little while the curiosity to know the names of the riders who will be aboard the S1-X for the inaugural season remained expectant.

Male and female riders will integrate a sport that will expose a new way of looking at electric scooters, while raising the flag for gender equality and conditions in motorsports. Elise Christie, Tre Whyte and Billy Morgan appear on the list of 30 confirmed riders to compete in eSkootr Championship alongside 27 other challengers.

Technical adjustments, major appointments for the development of the category and strategic partnerships have been announced over the past few months ahead of the debut of the eSkootr Championship (eSC). However, the participating riders and official teams serve as one of the important factors that fans want to know.

The 100% electric scooter championship will feature 10 teams and 30 riders (three per team), who will be selected from a pool of 35 applicants through the eSC Rider Draft in March, to bring an important part of the eSC to life ahead of its debut in London, May 13-14.

Prior to that event, however, eSkootr Championship officially revealed that the latest team to join the category is Nico Roche Racing, led by Nico Roche, an Irish professional road cyclist with 24 Grand Tour appearances. This new sport is perfectly suited to his guidelines and habits, so his presence is not surprising.
