Following testing by Porsche and Jaguar Racing, another Formula E team will unveil its powerful car for the Gen3 era, which will make its debut in season 9.

The Indian team, Mahindra Racing, informed that it will take its new M9Electro to the track at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, to be held from June 23 to 26 in the United Kingdom. This is one of the world’s major motoring events and will bring together the best in motorsport. It is a party where cars become the central theme and brings together classic cars, supercars and motor sport legends.

The team has already successfully completed the first test run of its new Gen 3 Formula race car, which is around 60 kg lighter than its predecessor and with 100 kW more power, will have a top speed of 200 mph (approx. 321 kmph).

Mahindra Racing’s new model is claimed to be the most efficient in the world, generating 40% of the power it uses during a competition through regenerative braking.

A Quality Jump

For the members of Mahindra Racing, the novel single-seater will raise the bar in the electric category. “It’s a proud moment for us to take this car to Goodwood just a week after its first test,” noted Team Principal Dilbagh Gill.

“This is a testament to the team’s hard work, determination and passion to always strive to achieve what others see as unachievable. I am very much looking forward to seeing the car debut at an iconic event like Goodwood, representing the whole of Formula E as the series takes a step into its new era in 2023,” he added.

For his part, driver Oliver Rowland expressed his delight at being one of the first to be behind the wheel of the M9Electro “The acceleration is impressive and it feels very fast overall. I’m sure there will be some good racing next season.”

The third generation (Gen3) era of Formula E is just around the corner and motivation is high. A week ago, automotive giant Porsche unveiled its portentous car, and now it’s Jaguar Racing doing the same to test its single-seater that will debut in season 9.

Jaguar Test Driver, Sacha Fenestraz, was in charge of completing the British brand’s first test laps of the I-TYPE Gen3 development car, gathering valuable data and information to fine-tune all the details for the upcoming 2023 championship.

The team continues to live important days after Mitch Evans’ victory in the Jakarta E-Prix, a triumph that put the team back in the fight for the championship. Now, the unveiling and testing of the car, represents another memorable achievement in the history of the institution.

“A key milestone has been marked for Jaguar TCS Racing as we drove our new Gen3 Jaguar I-TYPE development car for the first time,” said Team Principal, James Barclay.

He said the new Gen3 car will be the most efficient in the world and marks a significant technological breakthrough for the all-electric world championship.

“This initial test is key in the development of the new Jaguar I-TYPE, and is a major achievement in our ongoing R&D process that originally began in 2020. Excitement is really starting to build for the whole team as we look forward to the next generation of Formula E.”

Technical Details

Regarding the virtues of the single-seater, Jaguar TCS Racing Technical Manager, Phil Charles, highlighted that with 100kW of extra power, no rear hydraulic brakes, 600kW of ultra-high power, it will become a stunning all-new, all-electric race car for season 9.

He detailed that it has great speed charge capabilities and is much lighter than the Gen2, so expectations and motivation are high.

“These tests proved extremely valuable for the team and now we will return to the factory to analyze the learnings and continue to develop the car. We are all looking forward to seeing the progress of the development car as we look forward to the next generation of Formula,” Charles emphasized.

Formula E returns this weekend to the tracks with an interesting spice to mark the future of the competition. As part of the Monaco E-Prix, the electric single-seater series will unveil to the world the third-generation (Gen3) car, scheduled to debut in season 9.

It is the fifth time out of eight seasons that the Principality is part of the category, a circuit offering a spectacle of overtaking in corners and breathtaking views for the fans.

DS TECHEETAH driver Antonio Felix Da Costa claimed victory in 2021 during one of the most thrilling races in Formula E history, capping a first outing on the track with a daring overtake at the end of the tunnel on the final lap of the competition to take the win.

The day saw an impressive 28 overtakes between the top six runners alone, with the lead changing hands six times. The 2021 track incorporated a modified chicane at T11, which will disappear this year to make way for the stage design to return to that of the traditional Circuit de Monaco.

How is the Tournament Going?

DS TECHEETAH driver Jean-Éric Vergne leads the standings in the World Drivers’ Championship on the road to Monaco after an outstanding weekend in Rome, where he finished second in Round 5.

The Frenchman is the only two-time Formula E champion and the only driver this season to have scored points in every race so far. Although he left Rome claiming that he could and should have taken more out of the double header in the Italian capital, he has to be happy with the start he has made this season.

Vergne already knows what it’s like to win in the Principality after achieving it in 2019, and hopes his experience on the Monegasque streets will help him gain ground in the busy schedule heading into the second half of the campaign.

Just two points back is Envision Racing’s Robin Frijns. The Dutchman has three podiums to his credit, more than any other driver, and has been as fast as anyone in the early rounds this season.

Stoffel Vandoorne is another two units behind Frijns in third place, with Mercedes-EQ leading the world team championship, although reigning champion Nyck de Vries has not shown his full quality so far.

Jaguar Racing, meanwhile, enjoyed an unprecedented weekend in Rome after Mitch Evans’ double took the team to fourth place in the standings.

The Gen3 Car

This April 28, two days before the party in Monaco, the all-electric Gen3 Formula E race car will be unveiled at the Yacht Club. The car, ready to race from season 9 onwards, will be officially unveiled to the world at a special event for manufacturers, teams, drivers, partners and VIP guests. Fans will be able to experience the show through the championship’s digital channels and get an in-depth first look.

Jamie Reigle, CEO of Formula E, stated that the vehicle represents a leap forward for motorsport and electric mobility. “Designed to demonstrate that high performance, efficiency and sustainability can be combined without compromise, the Gen3 car is the most powerful.”

“We look forward to finally taking the covers off the Gen3 in Monaco, a place steeped in motorsport history, and seeing the car light up the streets of cities around the world next season,” added Reigle.

While Formula E cars are already rolling again on the urban circuits of Season 8, the tournament organizers are accelerating to make the changes corresponding to the third generation (Gen3) era, scheduled for Season 9.

For 2023, the electric series’ directors have promised single-seaters with impressive speed, since batteries will be lighter in weight.

The vehicles are expected to increase their power, as the rear electric motor will deliver up to 350 kW of energy, which in horsepower would be around 470 (the current one has 338 hp), enabling a top speed of 320 km/h to be set.

Lighter, narrower and smaller than the Gen2 single-seater, the intention is that the series will continue to be present on urban layouts rather than starting with a path towards permanent layouts.

When Will the Car Be Revealed?

In a race against the clock for the teams to know regulations and technical aspects of the vehicle that will be in force as of 2023, Alberto Longo, Formula E Director, announced that the presentation is scheduled to take place between March and June of this year.

According to Diario Motor, Longo said: “The presentation will be made before the World Motorsport Council in June, not in March, but in June. The fact that we are giving this almost in installments has a simple explanation and that is that we really want people to take notice of the Gen2”.

He assured that the current second generation is a spectacular car, and with the sporting changes they have made, it is a very efficient single-seater going much faster than the 2021 predecessor, which is why they have left a gap so Gen3 does not monopolize all the attention during a season that is just beginning.

About the possible changes in the format, Longo stated that they are discussing to reach a definitive agreement, and hope to have it ready at the next World Motor Sport Council.

Since its inception back in 2014, Formula E has undergone several transformations regarding regulations and characteristics of the cars. The first generation required two cars to finish the race, while in the second generation, the organization emphasized that only one car could finish the race; and in Gen3, ultra-fast charging will be included to take the next step towards electric mobility.
