Comparisons between Formula E and F1 are becoming more and more frequent with the progress made by the electric series in recent years, now converted into the World Championship of the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA).

The pilots of the category founded by businessman Alejandro Agag have been in charge of confronting the voices that detract from the merit of the tournament, and have even dared to affirm that there is a higher level in urban circuits than in the “big circus”.

One of the racers who defended the electrified competition was the representative of Jaguar Racing, Mitch Evans, who assured that Formula E is better than F1.

The New Zealander pointed out that “there is a perception that Formula 1 drivers are the best in the world, but I think, on average, if you took everyone, I would say Formula E is stronger. There have been some examples now of guys who came through and had a bit of difficulty at the beginning,” he maintained in statements reviewed by Eurosport.

“You see guys like Antonio Giovinazzi and he has found it very, very difficult. In the first race we almost beat him. I’ve beaten a lot of the Formula One guys I’ve raced against, so just because they’re in F1 doesn’t mean they’re better than us,” he added.

Evans explained that between the two categories the cars are much more similar. “In Formula One, there are only a few cars that have the ability to win a race or a championship, whereas, with us, I can literally show up this weekend and win or just lose it a little bit and finish 15th or 16th.”

He emphasized that the fusion of technology and sustainability with the brands and drivers involved make for a strong and very competitive tournament.

Positive Changes

One of the points in favor of Formula E is that it has been able to listen to criticism and correct in time to evolve as a tournament. For example, Evans refers to the new qualifying format that was introduced at the start of season 8 and has made the series even more exciting.

“If you look at the entry list, the level at which both teams and drivers are operating is a serious level. I think a big difference from this year obviously has been the qualifying format, which shook things up,” he emphasized.

He stated that consistency and strategy for efficient energy management will be key to fighting for the championship.

Jakarta overcame difficulties and was able to organize its first Formula E E-Prix, despite the obstacles experienced by the event’s promoters during the planning process. Political and social tension over the allocated budget and difficulties in the construction of the circuit marked the way to the event.

Once the inconveniences were overcome, the Indonesian capital witnessed a great show in which Mitch Evans, Jaguar Racing driver, took the honors after a tight battle against Jean-Éric Vergne and Edoardo Mortara, taking his third victory of the campaign.

Evans was able to come from behind on lap 31, and in turn 7 made a great maneuver to overtake Vergne, leader until that moment. As has been the case throughout the campaign, energy management played a key role for the podium finishers.

The Jaguar representative had about five minutes of extra time to keep his closest pursuers at bay, considering that his rear tires were wearing out quickly. Evans was able to withstand the pressure and with just one second to go to take the victory.

“That was a tough one. I was happy to be in it at the end. We had a tough last race, and this track was similar with the weather on another level. We put a lot of work into the setup and systems, but the team gave me what I needed,” Evans said at the end of the contest.

“We needed a good result today. But obviously it was a new track, new weather, new everything, you really don’t know how it’s going to go. So I’m very happy with the result, we’re back even though we were never really out, but it’s put us in a strong position, added the driver.

Vandoorne on Top

Mercedes-EQ driver Stofel Vandoorne was unable to stay inside the podium this time, but his fifth-place finish was enough to keep him at the top of the championship standings.

However, Vandoorne’s rivals finished the race strong, so the gap in the standings closed and only 12 points separate the top four drivers. Vergne is five points behind the Belgian, Mortara two behind the Frenchman in third and Evans another five behind.

Mercedes-EQ remains at the top of the teams’ table with 186 points, 16 ahead of DS Techeetah, which overtakes ROKiT Venturi Racing in the points table.

The next stop for Round 10 in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship is the E-Prix Marrakech on Saturday, July 2.

The Formula E Roman stage was a real honeymoon for Mitch Evans and Jaguar. For the second consecutive day, the New Zealander conquered the top of the podium to give a great show on the street circuit of Italy.

Evans, who came into the weekend with only one point to his credit and tenth place in the standings, once again put on a dominant performance, just as he did on Saturday.

Without focusing on clear duels, the driver was able to maintain his position after starting fourth on the grid and was able to efficiently manage the energy, a situation that has been key in the last competitions of the electric single-seater series.

In the midst of these circumstances, Evans activated the Attack Mode, which gave him an advantage and he used it in the right time since the Safety Car then appeared. With that extra push and the one he had saved in the race, he had no problems to pass Robin Frinjs (Envision) and André Lotterer (Porsche) and to conquer the victory.

Collision Endangered Evans

Just as Evans was on his way to a comfortable victory, an accident involving Nick Cassidy would add some excitement to the E-Prix.

Evans lost his advantage and, no longer in attack mode, had to defend himself from Vergne, Sunday’s poleman who also arrived with more electric power at the end. However, that was not enough to stand up to the Jaguar representative, but it was sufficient to take the overall lead to the detriment of Eduardo Mortara.

Mortara did not have a good Sunday, being once again out of the qualifying elimination phase, starting in 11th place and abandoning after a collision with Da Costa when he was trying to recover, as he did on Saturday.

On the other hand, the Mercedes drivers were not relevant on Sunday. Nick De Vries, reigning champion, had an incident in qualifying that earned him a penalty and he started 13th, so he was always out of the fight. Vandoorne, who competed until the end on Saturday, this time did not perform either in qualifying (8th) or in the race, where he finished fifth, but never seemed to have a chance to fight at least for the podium.

After this interesting day, Formula E returns on the weekend of April 29 and 30, with the incentive of the presentation of the third generation vehicle (Gen3), on April 28 in Monaco.

11 teams and 22 drivers gathered in the mythical city of Rome for the Formula E E-Prix, a street circuit that honors emblematic monuments of the Italian capital.

The event, which welcomed fans after two years of pandemic, had a chaotic start after Oliver Rowland crashed into a wall, affecting other racers, which forced the appearance of yellow flags.

Once the accident was over, Mitch Evans, from Jaguar team, was the great leader of the opening day to give the first victory of the year to the British team. It was a round day for the squad with the fifth place of Sam Bird, who despite having started thirteenth, made a great comeback that placed him in the top 10.

Evans led during the second half of the race and was able to withstand the pressure of Stofel Vandoorne – pole winner – and Robin Frijns in a nice fight that went to the Jaguar representative.

Mortara Still in the Lead

Despite not having a good start by being left out of the duel phase in qualifying, just like Bird, Eduardo Mortara had an important rebound that left him in seventh place.

The result allowed the ROKiT Venturi Racing driver to maintain the overall lead with 49 points, followed by Vandoorne with 46 and the 42 units accumulated by Frinjs.

Mercedes Squandered the Lead

After a solid qualifying stint for Vandoorne, it looked like he might take the win after completing both activations of the attack mode in the lead. However, the Jaguar drivers had already saved energy and started an all-out offensive, which also coincided with the slowdown of the Mercedes, DS and Frinjs, who failed to manage energy throughout the day.

This Sunday, Rome will host the second Formula E race scheduled in the city, where the defeated drivers will be looking for vindication, while Jaguar will have the mission to continue its ascent after Saturday’s important result.

With only two dates left for the end of Formula E’s seventh season, the British team Jaguar Racing is still battling for Team Championship, ranking 3rd, 10 points away from the first place.

Besides all the achievements earned by the team, the drivers’ performance stands out. In this sense, the team has confirmed that New Zealand pilot Mitch Evans will continue to drive the Gen 2 Jaguar I-Type 5 for the next season of the 100% electric single-seater competition.

Specifically, Evans, who has been with the team since 2016, will ride with Jaguar for two more seasons so far, which means he will be on board when the series’ third generation of cars, dubbed Gen 3, kicks in.

“I have been approached by other teams, but my home is and will be Jaguar. We are currently experiencing good results on track; Jaguar I-TYPE 5 has excellent performance and we are ready to compete with anyone on the grid”, were Evans’ words.

Meanwhile, Jaguar Racing team principal, James Barclay, said that Mitch is one of the best talents in Formula E, and a key asset to the team.

“Mitch’s speed and track results in Formula E speak for themselves, and we have continued building a formidable partnership year after year,” he said.

Mitch Evans after the London E-Prix

Evans in Season Seven

After the 13th race held in London, Evans holds the eighth position with 75 points, 20 points behind Nyck de Vries at the top of the standings.

So far, he has taken 4 podiums at the lowest level, enough not only to be confirmed by Jaguar Racing, but also to keep his (minimal) hopes of winning the championship.

His teammate Sam Bird, meanwhile, keeps more chances of winning the season, since he is in third place, only six units away from the lead.

The actions will be defined next weekend in Berlin, on August 14 and 15, where the 14th and 15th rounds will take place and define the ABB FIA Formula E Champion, on its first edition as a World Championship.

Mitch Evans has shown that he can fight in a tough new category like Formula E, and since his arrival in the series he is one of the competition’s cheering drivers.

He was born in New Zealand on June 24, 1994. From the age of six he was already at the wheel of karting, and at 16 he won the NZ Grand Prix, becoming one of the youngest racers to triumph in an International Grand Prix.

He was champion of the Toyota Racing Series of New Zealand twice in a row in 2010 and 2011. In addition, he took second place in the Australian Drivers’ Championship.

He came to GP2 in 2013 when he was still a rookie at just 18 years old and became the youngest rider in the history of the category to get on the podium by finishing third in Sepang, Malaysia. In the four years he was on that series, he ranked 14th in 2013, 4th in 2014, 5th in 2015, and 12th in 2016.

His electric adventure

Evans came to the world of electric racing in 2016, and his best record during that season was the conquest of fourth place in the E-Prix held in Mexico.

The New Zealander stayed with Jaguar Racing for his second experience in 2017-2018 and achieved a better performance by taking first place on the podium for Jaguar in Hong Kong and the pole position in Zurich, Switzerland.

Despite not having achieved a victory that season, Evans edged out his teammate Nelson Piquet Jr. and finished the season two places ahead of the Brazilian, sixth in the overall score.

Another challenge would come in 2018-2019 aboard the team’s Gen2 Jaguar I-Type 3, with which Evans claimed his first Formula E victory for both himself and Jaguar in Rome.

In the final round in New York, the New Zealander was among the eight drivers in contention for the title, but did not reach the finish line due to an unfortunate collision with Lucas di Grassi of Audi in the final race that left him in fifth place at the end of the year.

In his third season, Evans remained behind the wheel of Jaguar Racing alongside British rookie James Calado. The pair was in command of the new I-Type 4 of the British brand to contest the Formula E title in 2019-20.

After an uneven start to Saudi Arabia’s double career, he rallied back to plunge into the title race. Evans took the podium in Santiago after a resounding victory in Mexico City and, despite a qualifying mishap in Morocco, finished sixth as he rallied from the back of the grid.

The COVID-19 pandemic froze Evans’ ambition, who after the interruption of the tournament could not keep up the winning pace and lagged behind in the final table.

Despite the frustration in 2020, Jaguar Racing maintains its confidence intact in the New Zealand driver, and it is reinforced with the arrival of Sam Bird to be one of the favorite teams in the season seven of Formula E.

After what happened in the first Valencia E-Prix of the Formula E season (in which only nine drivers were able to finish the race), many drivers and spectators would pay special attention from now on to saving energy.

Antonio Felix Da Costa was the main protagonist of the first harvest in Valencia and Monaco last Saturday, for the bad and for the good respectively. The Portuguese was leading the classification in the Spanish E-Prix when in the last lap he was overtaken by the Dutch De Vries.

At Monaco, luck smiled on the Techeetah driver when he beat Mitch Evans on the last lap.

The Jaguar driver after the dispute admitted to being “gutted” for losing the victory in the last moments and for “paying the price” for consuming excess energy to gain position on the track.

“Right now it hurts but when you look back I got myself into that position because I burned energy under attack (mode). I  knew it was my only chance to get past them and I had two minutes left. I got Robin (De Frijns) in the ( turn) one and obviously Antonio (Felix da Costa) in (turn) three and that really bit me hard later in the race, ”he said.

It should be noted that Evans was about to consecrate himself with the overtaking of the race when he successfully passed da Costa for the lead in the narrow and fast Beau Rivage curve, a rather unusual place to overtake at the Monte Carlo circuit although then he did not stay behind. the head of the grill.

The New Zealander explained that in the final moments of the dispute he was on the defensive knowing the ability of the competition champion António Felix da Costa but that he could not do it successfully.

“It hurts because Monaco is Monaco, everyone wants to win here. Third is great but you want to get that first win around here. I’ve got multiple podiums in other categories but not a win and we came half a lap short unfortunately today,” he said.
