With just over three months to go until the E-Prix in Jakarta, Indonesia, scheduled for the weekend of June 4, the event is giving promoters more headaches than satisfaction. This week, the event’s organizers declared that the capacity planned to accommodate 50,000 spectators will have to be reduced to 10,000.

Irawan Sucahyono, a member of the Executive Committee preparing the Formula E race, was in charge of making the announcement. Despite the large reduction in capacity for fans, the executive did not rule out the possibility that as work on the circuit progresses, this number could increase.

“We could have 10,000 live fans, although this number could increase depending on how the project develops and the evaluation made by Formula E later on,” Sucahyono said.

These statements contrast with the comments made last December by Widi Amanasto, director of PT yakarta Propertindo, main sponsor of the E-Prix. Amanasto pointed out that such was the expectation sown by the series of electric single-seaters that they were going to set up extra areas to increase capacity and avoid chaos inside the circuit.

Hectic Organization

The race on Indonesian soil has unleashed a storm of obstacles. In the first instance, politicians opposed to the city’s government authorities criticized the fact that, in the midst of a deep economic crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, resources were being allocated for a non-priority sporting event.

However, the Indonesian government received an endorsement from Formula E. Series Director Alberto Longo expressed his appreciation for Indonesia’s participation. He valued the efforts of the country’s President, Joko Widodo, to reduce dependence on conventional energy and switch to environmentally friendly production.

Specifically on the resources earmarked for the race, Longo stated last December that there was nothing to hide: “We like transparency. We also transparently ask people in Jakarta because there is nothing to hide here.”

Another complication involved in the event is the construction of the street circuit. The works, although still on schedule, presented difficulties to work on the layout, since about 40% of the total length is swampy ground to carry out the corresponding work.

The site determined for the event consists of 2,400 meters with 18 curves and a straight track of about 527 meters.

The budget for organizing the E-Prix Formula E in Jakarta, Indonesia, has been one of the sticking points between the region’s authorities and the political opposition in Congress. Opponents of the event argue that the funds should be prioritized to address the COVID-19 pandemic, while the promoters assure that the race will bring many benefits.

Given this scenario, Jakpro, main organizer of the race, informed that they already have a main sponsor to ensure that the event will be a reality in terms of investment, without having to appeal to State resources.

In this regard, the director of asset management of the company, Gunung Kartiko, said that they have already secured several back-up sponsors that would support the implementation of the Formula E meeting in Jakarta for three seasons.

“There are already several brands that we have on agenda to support the development of the competition,” Gunung said without giving specific names of those who will sustain the contest. But he assured that no money related to the region’s budget would be used.

No Figures Have Been Disclosed

He admitted that the value of the sponsorship of Formula E, which will be held at the Indonesian capital, has not yet been determined. However, he expressed his optimism that, despite the adversities, they will end up putting on a great show not only for motorsport lovers, but also for those who bet on sustainability.

Considering the controversy, the Director of the new category, Alberto Longo, thanked the country’s authorities for their willingness to host the event, which increased the number of races to 16 for Season 8.

The electric series in Jakarta will be held on June 4, 2022, as part of the racing calendar approved by the International Automobile Federation (FIA) at the World Motor Sports Council held on October 15. It is worth mentioning that the meeting also decided on the formation of a new qualifying format, due to the complicated nature of the old module, which was also harshly criticized by a considerable number of drivers involved in the competition.

The inclusion of Indonesia into the championship program comes just after the postponement of the E-Prix of South Africa, because of restrictions caused by a new wave of coronavirus infections in the country.

After a deep political and social division generated by the potential realization of the E-Prix Formula E in Jakarta, Indonesia, finally those who were in favor of the proposal achieved the purpose. The electric series, along with the approval of the International Automobile Federation (FIA), submitted the 2022 calendar featuring the country.

Opponents of the event argued that the budget allocated for this purpose was necessary for priorities, such as the response to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has caused a deep economic crisis in the country.

Once confirmed the appointment for June 4, 2022, the promoters and organizers of the event seek to present the urban circuit, a scenario that has not yet been decided.

Widi Amanasto, president of JakPro, company in charge of promoting the show said initially that the Formula E circuit should not only showcase the city’s icon, but also reflect the balance of urban development with environmental conditions.

Fully Sustainable Environment

Amanasto explained to the event’s detractors that the FIA-endorsed competition features cars that do not cause pollution or noise. He stressed that the venue construction where the event will be held must be environmentally friendly.

“Formula E racing vehicles do not wreak havoc on the planet, so it is a city race. However, there must be criteria for the number and level of difficulty of the curves, with a priority on conservation and avoiding tree felling,” he referred.

JakPro is targeting a site inspection where the ride will take place at the end of October. Days later, the company, along with Formula E, will designate the location based on the specified criteria.

Amanasto assured that the city street tracks would be very effective at promoting Indonesia and Jakarta to the global community in order to witness the progress they have made.

“We want the world to see our progress and not hesitate to visit Indonesia, both as tourists or investors,” he maintained.

The Formula E Approval

Championship director and co-founder of Formula E, Alberto Longo, expressed his high appreciation for Indonesia’s participation. He valued the efforts of President Joko Widodo to reduce dependence on conventional energy, and switching to environmentally friendly production.
