Every year, the ABB FIA Formula E has managed to consolidate as one of the most recognized and respected motorsport categories. Following a sustainable outlook, it is heading towards the eighth season, where teams and drivers expect to perform well and raise the status of their organizations.

Of course, as in all motor sports, the boldness of engineers to interpret regulations will stand out in order to have a truly competitive single-seater capable of fighting for podiums, victories and championships. However, having good hands behind the wheel is also essential.

Now, that factor may not be a problem, as the top electric single-seater category really has big names for season 8. Lucas di Grassi will undoubtedly be the most attractive of them all, gathering the necessary elements to lift the champion’s trophy when the last checkered flag comes down on the track.

Joining the Brazilian will be Edoardo Mortara, another skilled driver who will form a great duo in ROKiT Venturi Racing. Together, they will be the team to follow during this new tour, although, the rest of the competitors will not make things easy for them and will try to ruin the objectives of the team led by Susie Wolff.

On the other hand, one of the names drawing special attention was Antonio Giovinazzi. The Italian comes from three seasons in Formula 1 with Alfa Romeo (formerly Sauber F1 Team) and is ready for a new sporting challenge, this time racing under the colors of DRAGON / PENSKE AUTOSPORT.

A pioneer of the ABB FIA Formula E (FE), Lucas di Grassi is getting ready for a new season around the best circuits in the world, with clear objectives and goals for the eighth campaign. Therefore, many are wondering what to expect from the Brazilian driver in this new stage of his career.

Although he continues at FE, now he will race for ROKiT Venturi Racing alongside Edoardo Mortara. A change always requires time to adapt, therefore, the champion of the category will have the clock against him, because a driver of his importance, coupled with the competitive single-seater he will have, can not afford to take too long to grasp the car.

Therefore, the objectives are clear, to fight race by race for the victory and to harvest important points to endorse his main goal: to become Formula E champion again, and of course, he has the necessary guarantees to achieve it. Indeed, if he had not found a really competitive team, the seventh season would surely have been the Brazilian’s last on board electric cars.

Objectives of Lucas di Grassi

Those are the goals that are Lucas di Grassi’s priority for the eighth season at individual level. Now, together with Mortara, he will have to work hard to lead ROKiT Venturi Racing to the Team Title.

Watch out ROKiT!

The Monegasque team must be very cautious with the moves it has just made. Lucas di Grassi and Edoardo Mortara are great drivers. Neither of them will want to act as the other’s squire, which means that it is likely that on more than one occasion there will be big fights on tracks that could jeopardize team points in case of a possible incident on circuit.

Will they have to give team orders, will they assign a driver 1 and 2? It is still too early to tell and it will surely be revealed during the coming season of the 100% electric single-seater category, although di Grassi seems to be the favorite to take the reins of the organization of Formula E due to his endorsement, curriculum and talent.

The International Automobile Federation (FIA) recognizes the commitment of the NIO 333 team to sustainability by awarding the highest level of environmental certification through the FIA 3 Star Accreditation, joining a select group of teams to have such distinction in Formula E.

The green plans, management and actions have allowed the organization to take this recognition after demonstrating a real interest in combating climate change through its #TogetherWeCanMakeItBetter campaign, where issues such as bio-diversity and waste management were addressed.

“FIA congratulates NIO 333 on receiving Three Star status within FIA’s Environmental Accreditation, the highest level of certification in our framework. This achievement demonstrates the strong commitment of the team to environmental sustainability,” said Jean Todt, President of the highest motorsport organization.

To obtain this accreditation, teams must meet requirements to prove their commitment to the environment, as well as providing proper documentation of everything they have done to support their deserving status. NIO 333 joins ROKiT Venturi Racing, Mahindra Racing, Envision Virgin Racing, Mercedes-EQ and Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler as holders.

“In the past season, besides competing at the world’s most competitive motorsport championship, the NIO 333 Formula E team has also actively taken on social responsibility and strived to be a leader for the cause of sustainable development,” sentenced Vincent Wang, the CEO of the team.

The ABB FIA Formula E (FE) has been running for seven seasons and counting. What started as a dream ended up becoming a reality, because nowadays electric vehicles have taken an incredible boom, and everything seems to indicate that projections for this motorsports sector will continue to grow.

It was born as the very first 100% electric single-seater category. Many criticized it and others supported it, but the truth is that heading into the eighth season is stronger than ever. Therefore, we bring you five moments confirming the FE’s strength, when high-profile drivers got into a car from the electrified division of the FIA.

Emanuele Pirro

A Mahindra Gen1 single-seater was tested by Emanuele Pirro at Imola Circuit (2018). The four-time winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans dared to experience sensations of a vehicle of this type: fast, sustainable and silent, those were the characteristics that caught his attention, so much so that he did a couple of extra laps than the ones he had planned to run.

Robert Kubica

Known in the Formula 1 world for being born again, as in 2007 he suffered a terrible accident during the Canadian Grand Prix, where his car was totally destroyed, but luckily he came out unscathed. The following year he had his revenge and won at the Gilles Villeneuve circuit. Now, after several years, he climbed into a Formula E car at Donignton Park in 2017, working on his return to the Grand Circus, and secretly completed a test race, according to The-Race.

Alex Palou

(Photo: @alexpalou)

Back in 2016, Alex Palou raced at Calafat for a half-day of racing with other drivers who were being evaluated by Dilbagh Gill, Mahindra Racing boss. “We tested a few drivers and Alex was one that summer. He was based in Barcelona at the time, so he actually did a couple of tests and was quite useful,” he told The Race.

Esteban Ocon

The French Formula 1 sensation currently competes alongside Fernando Alonso at Alpine, but back in 2015 he dared to feel the power and speed of Formula E during the Pau Grand Prix aboard the Spark SR_01 Renault at the demonstration program for the public. At that time he was coming from being European F3 champion and was on the verge of winning GP3 (now called Formula 3).

Heinz-Harald Frentzen

The commitment of ABB Formula E (FE) to sustainable initiatives has been part of their internal policy since its inception, both inside and outside the circuits. Therefore, a new partnership has been born to combat and address one of the most worrying issues regarding climate change: global warming.

The 100% electric single-seater category became the first sport in the world to join the Science Based Targets (SBTi) Program and the Business Ambition Pledge for the 1.5° Celsius commitment. Let’s remember that the planet is facing serious problems with temperature, and if it continues to rise, it will reach a dreaded point of no return, according to several experts.

Now, to address this sensitive issue, FE will work together with the SBTi, an entity that functions as a partnership between the United Nations Global Compact, the World Resources Institute (WRI), the CDP and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). Together, and now with the electrified category as a new member of the global Race To Zero campaign, the goal is to bring together as many companies as possible to prevent future threats to Earth, generating jobs and creating stability in multiple ways.

One of the new Formula E objectives will be to decrease carbon emissions by 45% in 2030, following the main line of the category concerning air pollution and the fight against climate change. Furthermore, these goals align with the FIA’s #PurposeDriven movement.

“…One year ago, Formula E became the first sport to achieve net zero certification since it started. Today, we achieved another milestone by aligning ourselves with the Science Based Targets initiative, reinforcing our leadership position in the global sport,” said Jamie Reigle, CEO of FE.

From the sustainable motorsport assured that they will continue to fight for change, acting as catalysts and pioneers for the industry when creating global awareness, a factor that is easy to express but difficult to understand, as many people refuse to make minimal changes that will contribute to a healthier future.

It is time to put an end to the massive waste buildup causing high levels of pollution on the planet. Formula E knows it and put their hands up to contribute on the waters of London, very close to the E Prix of the English capital.

The 100% electric single-seater category headed to Canary Wharf and the River Thames to commemorate World Clean Up Day and join a cause where more than 50 million people from over 180 countries have been participating since 2018, when the initiative began.

Electric boats built with recycled plastic extracted from the river, were the means of transportation used by the participants. These were the means of transportation used by the FE at the event organized by Hubbub, with the intention of touring the location for over an hour to remove waste affecting the environmental ecosystem in the waters.

Besides participating on sustainable actions, Formula E has also given a series of new initiatives for awareness and clean behaviors to avoid polluting the seas, something that must be stopped as soon as possible to prevent altering the natural course of life.

Formula E sets an example

To demand, one must first set an example, and that is precisely what Formula E has done since it was created, promoting the use of electric vehicles as a part of everyday urban mobility, being one of the pioneers in the industry by betting on a scenario that was disapproved by many at the time.

Also, it should be noted that since season 5, hydration stations were installed in partnership with Allianz, containing reusable water bags, and, if there are bottles present in the paddock, under no circumstances must they be for single use. In fact, this measure resulted in 300,000 fewer bottles being stored at FE events between January 2019 and March 2020.

Lithium-ion batteries, on the other hand, are recycled with the support of Umicore, which collects, sorts and dismantles the parts before finally reusing them at the end of their useful life. The parts are first collected, sorted and dismantled before being reused at the end of their useful life. Finally, Michelin tires “don’t go to waste” at the end of their life cycle, as they also have a second chance on the market, saving costs and eliminating potential waste in the environment.

Since it arrived to motorsport, the ABB FIA Formula E (FE) started a sustainable revolution that has spread throughout the world today, after consolidating a strictly necessary project to make a significant contribution to carbon reduction. In fact, a year ago, it became the first division to be certified as zero-emission.

This has been possible thanks to the three-step plan that the 100% electric single-seater category strictly follows. Effectively measuring carbon output, reducing the footprint of the championship and offsetting emissions that cannot be avoided, as this is how the FE plays a fundamental role in green sports.

Quantis has been part of this process during the seven seasons of existence in motorsport. The company is in charge of specifically monitoring the carbon emissions under the responsibility of the championship. According to FE figures, there was a 55% reduction between the fifth and sixth seasons.

La imagen tiene un atributo ALT vacío; su nombre de archivo es fiaformulae_186456180_1189179101520812_6610039552031281074_n-819x1024.jpg

The measures implemented inside and outside the E Prix were enough to receive the international standard for sustainability in events. Optimizing transportation, collecting plastic bottles and recycling lithium-ion batteries are part of the green activities and practices carried out at every circuit visited by the category.

“Formula E was created with the primary goal of accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles and promoting sustainable practice, raising awareness of the benefits from driving electrified cars and how clean mobility can counteract climate change,” said Julia Pallé, FE Sustainability Director.

Formula E Step-by-Step

Formula E revealed how it is making the smallest possible impact on the planet. Pooling maritime cargo to reduce carbon, making as few trips as possible, preferably by water or train.

Work directly with suppliers to have low-impact solutions in terms of food logistics. Also, not having public parking lots encourages fans to use sustainable means of transportation to attend circuits to enjoy the races.

Lucas di Grassi, ambassador of sustainable mobility, flagship and ABB FIA Formula E Champion, could not be left out of the competition for season 8, therefore, the driver will be part of ROKiT Venturi Racing to contribute all his experience and talent along with Edoardo Mortara, forming a dream duo.

This team comes from a great campaign at the top of the electric motorsport category, and the Brazilian’s arrival shows that they are going for more, because having the most complete driver that the FE has ever had will always be a great advantage, so, the 2021-2022 season will have all the spotlights on ROKiT Venturi Racing.

Both sides wanted the best. Di Grassi is eager to continue building his legacy in the electrified division of the FIA, and ROKiT will provide him with the right car to accomplish the objective after objective until he reaches the ultimate goal: winning the championship. “Anyone who knows me, understands how competitive I am; driving for a team that I know can fight at the front and really challenge for the championship is essential to me. ROKiT Venturi Racing was simply the best choice and I am very happy to be part of the team,” said the Brazilian driver.

The Talent of Lucas di Grassi at ROKiT Venturi Racing

The driver also assured that he has closely followed the team’s work since Formula E arrived, demonstrating the improvements made over the seasons to the point of becoming a truly competitive organization. “The team performed very, very well last season.”

He also analyzed the great work done by who will be his teammate, Edo Mortara, a key factor to join forces and achieve important points for ROKiT Venturi Racing, although neither will surely want to be the other’ s squire, on the contrary, both of them are aiming for the Drivers’ Championship.

“Edo had a fantastic season, really strong, he fought for the title until the end, and there were many times during the season when I raced both Venturi cars and I could see how competitive they were.” Precisely, the friendship between them can make things go as smoothly as possible, in fact, it seems to have been one of Di Grassi’s reasons to come to ROKiT.

“It’s not just about the team, I’m very happy to drive alongside Edo, we’ve known each other for a long time now, we were part of the Audi program together. I respect him as a driver, as a human – he’s a very talented driver and a great character, I think we’re going to work very well together.”

Knowing about rules in any category of world motorsport will always be fundamental to understand how drivers behave on track and why they perform the actions they do, which is why there is a lot of talk about DRS in Formula 1 and Attack Mode in Formula E.

The Drag Reduction System (DRS) is one of the main innovations introduced since the 2011 season in Formula 1 in terms of downforce. The system is responsible of assisting drivers when overtaking after they press a button located on their steering wheel that opens the rear wing by almost half.

Like a letterbox, the rear wing opens on straights to avoid wind resistance caused by its natural structure, considerably increasing the F1 car’s speed.

To use DRS, drivers must have a car in front of them at less than one second, while the car in front will only be able to use it if it is less than one second behind its rival. The use of DRS does not guarantee an overtaking, however, it increases the probability of success.

DRS and Attack Mode: Different driving systems with the same goal

The Attack Mode in Formula E, on the other hand, consists of a very appealing element that performs the same function as DRS: to facilitate overtaking. However, their mechanisms are totally different.

Formula E introduced areas in all circuits to activate the Attack Mode, also from the steering wheel with the condition of crossing the designated area to turn it on, causing the car to receive extra electric power (35 kW) to overtake rivals on track, being of mandatory use in all e-Prixs.

Alexander Sims: Founding Pioneer of FIA Formula E

Alexander Sims joined the FIA Formula E from the beginning of the electric category, being a pioneer in electric competition who earned his seat through effort with the BMW i Andretti team, extending his relationship with them for two seasons, adding a triumph. In fact, he became the first driver in the category to win three pole positions in a row.

In 2020 he transferred his talent to other categories, trying his luck in the 24 hours of the Nürburgring, obtaining victory after an intense battle that he starred with his teammates Nicky Catsburg and Nick Yelloly in Rowe Racing aboard his BMW M6 GT3.
