A pioneer of the ABB FIA Formula E (FE), Lucas di Grassi is getting ready for a new season around the best circuits in the world, with clear objectives and goals for the eighth campaign. Therefore, many are wondering what to expect from the Brazilian driver in this new stage of his career.

Although he continues at FE, now he will race for ROKiT Venturi Racing alongside Edoardo Mortara. A change always requires time to adapt, therefore, the champion of the category will have the clock against him, because a driver of his importance, coupled with the competitive single-seater he will have, can not afford to take too long to grasp the car.

Therefore, the objectives are clear, to fight race by race for the victory and to harvest important points to endorse his main goal: to become Formula E champion again, and of course, he has the necessary guarantees to achieve it. Indeed, if he had not found a really competitive team, the seventh season would surely have been the Brazilian’s last on board electric cars.

Objectives of Lucas di Grassi

Those are the goals that are Lucas di Grassi’s priority for the eighth season at individual level. Now, together with Mortara, he will have to work hard to lead ROKiT Venturi Racing to the Team Title.

Watch out ROKiT!

The Monegasque team must be very cautious with the moves it has just made. Lucas di Grassi and Edoardo Mortara are great drivers. Neither of them will want to act as the other’s squire, which means that it is likely that on more than one occasion there will be big fights on tracks that could jeopardize team points in case of a possible incident on circuit.

Will they have to give team orders, will they assign a driver 1 and 2? It is still too early to tell and it will surely be revealed during the coming season of the 100% electric single-seater category, although di Grassi seems to be the favorite to take the reins of the organization of Formula E due to his endorsement, curriculum and talent.

The International Automobile Federation (FIA) recognizes the commitment of the NIO 333 team to sustainability by awarding the highest level of environmental certification through the FIA 3 Star Accreditation, joining a select group of teams to have such distinction in Formula E.

The green plans, management and actions have allowed the organization to take this recognition after demonstrating a real interest in combating climate change through its #TogetherWeCanMakeItBetter campaign, where issues such as bio-diversity and waste management were addressed.

“FIA congratulates NIO 333 on receiving Three Star status within FIA’s Environmental Accreditation, the highest level of certification in our framework. This achievement demonstrates the strong commitment of the team to environmental sustainability,” said Jean Todt, President of the highest motorsport organization.

To obtain this accreditation, teams must meet requirements to prove their commitment to the environment, as well as providing proper documentation of everything they have done to support their deserving status. NIO 333 joins ROKiT Venturi Racing, Mahindra Racing, Envision Virgin Racing, Mercedes-EQ and Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler as holders.

“In the past season, besides competing at the world’s most competitive motorsport championship, the NIO 333 Formula E team has also actively taken on social responsibility and strived to be a leader for the cause of sustainable development,” sentenced Vincent Wang, the CEO of the team.

It is time to put an end to the massive waste buildup causing high levels of pollution on the planet. Formula E knows it and put their hands up to contribute on the waters of London, very close to the E Prix of the English capital.

The 100% electric single-seater category headed to Canary Wharf and the River Thames to commemorate World Clean Up Day and join a cause where more than 50 million people from over 180 countries have been participating since 2018, when the initiative began.

Electric boats built with recycled plastic extracted from the river, were the means of transportation used by the participants. These were the means of transportation used by the FE at the event organized by Hubbub, with the intention of touring the location for over an hour to remove waste affecting the environmental ecosystem in the waters.

Besides participating on sustainable actions, Formula E has also given a series of new initiatives for awareness and clean behaviors to avoid polluting the seas, something that must be stopped as soon as possible to prevent altering the natural course of life.

Formula E sets an example

To demand, one must first set an example, and that is precisely what Formula E has done since it was created, promoting the use of electric vehicles as a part of everyday urban mobility, being one of the pioneers in the industry by betting on a scenario that was disapproved by many at the time.

Also, it should be noted that since season 5, hydration stations were installed in partnership with Allianz, containing reusable water bags, and, if there are bottles present in the paddock, under no circumstances must they be for single use. In fact, this measure resulted in 300,000 fewer bottles being stored at FE events between January 2019 and March 2020.

Lithium-ion batteries, on the other hand, are recycled with the support of Umicore, which collects, sorts and dismantles the parts before finally reusing them at the end of their useful life. The parts are first collected, sorted and dismantled before being reused at the end of their useful life. Finally, Michelin tires “don’t go to waste” at the end of their life cycle, as they also have a second chance on the market, saving costs and eliminating potential waste in the environment.

Knowing about rules in any category of world motorsport will always be fundamental to understand how drivers behave on track and why they perform the actions they do, which is why there is a lot of talk about DRS in Formula 1 and Attack Mode in Formula E.

The Drag Reduction System (DRS) is one of the main innovations introduced since the 2011 season in Formula 1 in terms of downforce. The system is responsible of assisting drivers when overtaking after they press a button located on their steering wheel that opens the rear wing by almost half.

Like a letterbox, the rear wing opens on straights to avoid wind resistance caused by its natural structure, considerably increasing the F1 car’s speed.

To use DRS, drivers must have a car in front of them at less than one second, while the car in front will only be able to use it if it is less than one second behind its rival. The use of DRS does not guarantee an overtaking, however, it increases the probability of success.

DRS and Attack Mode: Different driving systems with the same goal

The Attack Mode in Formula E, on the other hand, consists of a very appealing element that performs the same function as DRS: to facilitate overtaking. However, their mechanisms are totally different.

Formula E introduced areas in all circuits to activate the Attack Mode, also from the steering wheel with the condition of crossing the designated area to turn it on, causing the car to receive extra electric power (35 kW) to overtake rivals on track, being of mandatory use in all e-Prixs.

Alexander Sims: Founding Pioneer of FIA Formula E

Alexander Sims joined the FIA Formula E from the beginning of the electric category, being a pioneer in electric competition who earned his seat through effort with the BMW i Andretti team, extending his relationship with them for two seasons, adding a triumph. In fact, he became the first driver in the category to win three pole positions in a row.

In 2020 he transferred his talent to other categories, trying his luck in the 24 hours of the Nürburgring, obtaining victory after an intense battle that he starred with his teammates Nicky Catsburg and Nick Yelloly in Rowe Racing aboard his BMW M6 GT3.

In the FIA Formula E world championship, the title drivers always get the spotlight and the media attention before, during and after each E-Prix. However, there are anonymous heroes who work outside the cameras of the press and do an incredible job in favor of the development of the teams to arrive in the best possible way to play each season.

We are talking about the reserve and development driver, who on many occasions can be the same, or a professional can be used for each position in the Maximum Category of Electric Motor Racing. However, do you know exactly what the functions of these pilots are? If the answer is negative, calm down, here we will tell you everything in detail.

Mainly, the reserve driver in Formula E is in charge of being ready to replace any of the starters in case they cannot compete in an E-Prix during the campaign. These reasons can be due to accidents, illness or extra-sporting (personal) reasons, although his role goes far beyond the simple fact of being a substitute.

Related content: Eriksson will debut in Formula E in the absence of Muller in Pueblaksson will debut in Formula E in the absence of Muller in Puebla

The reserve and development pilot

The reserve driver is also in charge of collecting data in any of the free test sessions in the E-Prix, as well as in the tests prior to the start of a season in FIA Formula E, which is extremely important for the engineers for the assembly of the car and the strategy to be used on the track.

“I’m there to jump and drive if Pascal (Wehrlein) or Andre (Lotterer) can’t. I’m with the team doing the walk on the track. Also, I’m in all the meetings listening and learning.”

Now, in the second section of these drivers (development), they are the ones who spend the most hours in the simulator to gather information and transmit it to the team, such as track settings, braking points, car damage and any details. As small as it may seem, it ends up making a big difference when facing the E-Prix.

In addition, another detail to emphasize for these anonymous heroes is that being the reserve and development driver does not mean that they are less than the starters or get on badly, on the contrary, they have everything to be in the car during each weekend of competition, therefore, they are eagerly awaiting the slightest opportunity to make the most of it.

More and more women are showing off their talent in world motorsport, as that absurd thought that it is a sport solely and exclusively destined for men is now forgotten. Many pilots show their skills in the various categories of competition that exist throughout the world.

One of them is Simona de Silvestro, born in Switzerland on September 1, 1988 (32 years old), she has managed to do her thing when she put the helmet visor, demonstrating her great quality behind the wheel in different important and prestigious categories such as the FIA Formula E, Indy Car Series and the Australian SuperCar Championship.

Her journey with her single-seaters began in the Italian Formula Renault 2.0 in 2005, there she gave a notch to her potential but was unable to get podiums. However, that did not stop her from changing category and continent, given that a year later she went directly to the United States to participate in Formula BMW, exploding among the best finishing fourth.

In 2008 she became the second woman to win a race in the Atlantic Championship competing with the Newman Wachs Racing team. In 2009 she went on to defend the Stargate Worlds colors, putting on another show of talent after placing fourth overall thanks to four wins and four second places.

IndyCar

Simona de Silvestro took the big step in her sports career after reaching the IndyCar Series, one of the categories that any driver dreams of competing in. Her dream began in 2010 with the HVM Racing team claiming the Rookie of the Year distinction. There, in addition to her glory, she experienced scary moments when she suffered an accident that burned her left hand at Texas Motor Speedway, however that did not stop her from continuing to give everything for everything inside the car.

In 2012 things were not entirely positive for Simona de Silvestro, who fitted a Lotus engine well below expectations to compete in IndyCar, so much so that her best result was a fourteenth place. Already in 2013 the things went greatly after becoming the third woman to get on the podium in this category, under the command of the KV Racing Technology team.

However, after this success, she was left without a seat for the 2014 campaign. When everything seemed to fall apart, Formula 1 knocked on her door when Sauber recruited her with the aim of contesting the highest category of world motorsport, but unfortunately a series of problems Economic factors prevented that dream, making the team feel obliged to cancel the contract.

Formula E

The talent of Simona de Silvestro could not be off the tracks for long, which is why Andretti bets on her and takes her to the FIA Formula E, being the starting driver for the previously mentioned team, winning the points on a couple of occasions and ending in box 18 of the championship.

Currently, the swiss serves as a reserve and development driver for Tag Heuer Porsche, providing all her talent and criteria to help the team grow, while waiting for an opportunity that will return her to ownership in the electric category, and for this she remains active competing for the same brand, but in the GT Masters in Germany.

Robin Frijns is more than happy to lead the FIA Formula E world championship with four dates remaining (double date) in the 2020-2021 season, therefore, he was pleased after the performance that the team has shown until the moment. However, he was also very self-critical about being confident heading into the home stretch.

In an exclusive interview with Formula E, the Dutchman signed a spectacular Monaco E-Prix to attack the lead, taking advantage of the fact that Nyck de Vries did not score, although he did not want to take anything for granted until the last checkered flag comes down on the main straight of the electrical championship. “I can’t really take much from being in the standings lead.”

Frijns recalled that he was in the same position during Season Five, but that luck and fortune were not on his side in the final stretch of the battle, adding dropouts that harmed the pilot’s aspirations to be crowned as the brand new champion under the command of the Envision Virgin Racing team.

The rest of the way for Robin Frijns

Rounds 8 and 9 will be held in Mexican territory, as the excitement of the FIA Formula E will move towards Puebla for a pair of vibrant E-Prix that promise adrenaline from start to finish. Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 June will be raced at the Autodromo Miguel E. Abed after just over a month of having traveled the streets of Monaco.

Then on July 10 and 11 the category will continue in North America, but this time in the United States when Robin Frijns and company invade New York City to race the iconic streets of Brooklyn at the Red Hook Circuit. Once the checkered flag is seen there, it will be necessary to cross the sea to land in London and continue the fight to define the champion.

The layout of the ExCel Circuit will serve as a witness for the 24 drivers in the category to squeeze the speed of their cars around the Royal Docks, for the first time since 2016 after Nico Prost triumphed in the two UK rounds. Ultimately, the curtain on Formula E will drop in Berlin, where the Dutch Envision Virgin Racing driver hopes to stay in the lead to clinch the title, or race knowing that he has already won.

At only 26 years old, Pascal Wehrlein accumulates a lot of experience in the automotive world at the competition level. His age does not reflect at all the maturity that he has had behind the wheel in all the categories that he has participated, managing to show his talent and potential until he established himself firmly in the FIA Formula E.

Born on October 18, 1994, in Germany, this pilot started from a very young age to show his talent as a pilot, quickly generating that the media spotlights will move to his shoulders to evaluate and closely follow his performances in order to discover up to where it could go in the racing universe.

Like almost all competitors, Pascal Wehrlein started karting in 2004. There, he spent a few years showing his worth, adapting his driving style by learning new things to forge a path of success. However, it was not until 2010 when Pascal Wehrlein decided to make the leap towards single-seaters, with the ADAC Formula Masters being the selected category, managing to establish himself as a brand new champion in the following campaign.

In 2013 he moved on to the DTM, climbing higher and higher and making his name sound on the competitive landscape. Already in 2014 he achieved an unprecedented milestone after becoming the youngest driver to win a race in that category (20 years) while defending the HWA team colors. A year later he accomplished what he had achieved in the past and finished champion after registering two victories, two second places and a third place.

Formula 1

Faced with such a notch of talent, Formula 1 was not long in coming for Pascal Wehrlein, that same year where he won the DTM, Mercedes looked for him to stamp his signature with the Silver Arrows as a test driver, participating in the pre-season free trials carried out at the Circuit de Catalunya, Barcelona.

However, his talent could not continue to play a secondary role, therefore, in 2016 he became the starting driver for Escudería Manor, which was the weakest in the championship, but still excelled on the track and scored his first point in the top championship of motorsport during the Austrian Grand Prix after finishing tenth. In 2018 he was called up again by Mercedes, but this time as a development driver, leaving the team and the category at the end of the year.

The 2018-2019 season was Pascal Wehrlein’s first in FIA Formula E under the orders of the Mahindra Racing team, winning a pole position, two fastest laps and a podium that allowed him to continue with that team in the 2019-2020 campaign, but he was replaced by Alex Lynn after the first five E-Prix. However, his journey in the electric category did not end, as he was called by TAH Heuer Porsche to replace Neel Jani in the current harvest where he appears in the 12th box of the championship with 32 units.

With the Puebla E-Prix looming, Lucas Di Grassi has taken a few minutes to self-analyze his 2020-2021 FIA Formula E season, being totally honest with himself about what he has accomplished thus far. In addition, he hopes to continue improving towards the end of the campaign to finish in the best possible way in the four double-date dates that remain to be played.

The Brazilian admitted that he has not shown why he is one of the best drivers in the category, since the “Season Seven” of the electric competition is not the best for him, ranking 19 in the drivers’ championship with 14 units, being out in the third and fourth appointment of the calendar. In fact, his best performance so far is a seventh place.

Now, the driver’s problems are further aggravated when compared head-to-head with the performance of his teammate, René Rast, who sits in the eighth box of the general table. However, the situation is further complicated by raising the statistics to the next level: Robin Frijns is the leader of the FIA Formula E on board the same car that Di Grassi drives (Audi e-Tron FE07).
