Alexander Sims’ days in Formula E are numbered. And it has been the driver himself who expressed his desire to leave the electric single-seater series due to poor results.

The British driver has only accumulated two points this season and despite having offers from other teams, he has preferred to step aside and visualize new horizons in his career in motorsport.

Speaking to The Race, Sims pointed out that his latest appearances on street circuits have been really complicated, which has made him rethink many things in his career. “Nobody likes to be less competitive than they’d like to be, and there’s no answer as to why. That’s the main thing for me.”

Paradoxically in Berlin, an appointment where the Mahindra driver conquered the only units in the table, frustration was present as he did not understand the reasons why the car performed so well and yet was clearly outperformed by other competitors.

“The car felt good that day, but we couldn’t understand why. This is my biggest problem. I don’t know what to try with the car, because even when we are fast, we don’t see much difference in the data, we can’t understand what gives me that feeling,” he detailed.

Next Steps

After revealing his intentions to leave the electric category, Sims seems to be clear that his future lies in endurance racing, as he admitted difficulties with the Formula E format, which has a considerably shorter time.

“I think it’s just the single-seater format, especially in Formula E, with very little driving time, high pressure, very competitive environment, which is great, because when you do well, you feel like you’ve won. But it’s not 100% me. Endurance is a better place for me personally,” he noted.

Sims acknowledged that, despite making the decision, he has a strange feeling about leaving a series that is growing and attracting more and more big-name drivers, as well as breaking ratings records.

“It’s an incredible category, but at the end of the day, it’s the day job. It’s the work you do day in and day out and the sense of pleasure you get from it. Like I said, I get along with everyone on the team. I never had any problems with them. It’s the race format, it doesn’t work for me,” he concluded.

There are more and more movements at Formula E for Season 8. This time, the team Mahindra Racing has confirmed the signing of the British Oliver Rowland, joining from Nissan e.dams to complete the grid with Alexander Sims.

Rowland, who comes from a discreet season, two podium finishes with no victories, and finished 14th with 77 points.

Alexander Lynn, on the other hand, has been sacrificed by the team, where he achieved a victory and 3 podiums during the season, finishing 12th.

“Moving to a new team is positive. Of course, there will be a transition, but I believe that combining my experience at Formula E and the team’s results last season, we will achieve a lot together”, were Oliver’s first impressions.

Rowland’s Journey

It was back in the 2018/2019 season when the UK-born driver joined Formula E full-time through Nissan.

The first time Rowland drove an electric single-seater was precisely with Mahindra during the 2016/2017 campaign, although he failed to add units on that occasion.

Now, the experienced 29-year-old will be looking to make a turnaround on the second year, in which the category will start as World Championship.

Sims Remains at Home

Well-known for being an enthusiast of renewable energies and electric cars, Alexander Sims is gearing up to face his third season at Formula E and his second with the Indian team, Mahindra Racing.

“There is a potential to achieve better results in Season 8, and we will be working very hard to implement the learnings from the recently completed campaign into the next one. I’m looking forward working with Oliver, who is clearly quite fast and a great racer,” Sims said.

So, the teams of the first electric single-seater series are setting up to face their last year with the second car generation, preparing the step to Gen3, which will start in 2022/2023.

Mahindra Racing is strengthening its bonds with its fans. The Formula E team launched a contest called “Driven by design”, inviting supporters to design the uniforms to be used by their drivers at the final London E-Prix.

Both Alexander Sims and Alex Lynn, starting drivers, were delighted with the fans’ response to the dynamic announced by the institution through its social networks.

“The high quality entries were really impressive and it was clear that people put a lot of thought and effort into their designs,” said Sims.

The Briton opted for Viyol Ezekiel Crasto’s creation, a graphic design student. The drawing features a star-shaped Union Jack flag and the Indian flag’s three colors.

“I liked the Indian and British color combination, as well as the cool interpretation of my logo. I liked the rectangles, plus the very sharp lines, which fit me well,” he explained.

In Lynn’s case, he chose a sketch inspired by geographic locations and history of their different cultures and traditions. “I love the lion and the navy blue color. I saw this design and it immediately caught my eye.”

“I really liked how the designer brought in all of those different elements, which all mean something to me and the team, and it’s perfect for my race at home,” Lynn added.

A Tradition

Since Formula E’s first season, Mahindra Racing has encouraged such initiatives to engage its fans within the demanding competition.

In addition of seeing their designs on track, the winners will also receive a signed replica of their race suits they wore on that weekend.

About the strategy, Dilbagh Gill, CEO of Mahindra Racing, noted, “This is a tremendously exciting opportunity for our creative and passionate fans to personally contribute to our drivers’ home race weekend in July.”

He assured that witnessing the incredible talent submitted over the past years, “Alex and Alexander had a hard time choosing their favorite designs.” The director also praised the great reception from fans, and applauded imagination in all the models received.

Alexander Sims hasn’t had it all since he arrived in Formula E. He got a solid start, setting very good times in his debut season, but has not been able to establish himself as a star driver. However, the teams belonging to the innovative electric car category continue to rely on the skills of the British driver, who has already accumulated three seasons.

In addition, the racer has been an activist in everything related to electric technology, and is strongly committed to renewable energies, environmental protection and sustainability, so the competition fits him like a glove.

Sims was born in England on March 15, 1988 and started driving when he was only 10 years old in Karting. His most important achievements include the McLaren Autosport BRDC Award, a prize that recognizes young talent in the United Kingdom.

In ’99 he made his flamboyant debut in Formula 3, where he combined single-seater driving with GT and sportscar racing in series such as Blancpain Endurance, British GT and the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans. Between 2011 and 2013 he made his appearance in the also renowned GP3 Series.

He arrived to Formula E in 2018-2019 season and remained for 2019-2020 with BMW, teaming up with Maximilian Guenther. The Brit resumed his rise in the all-electric series with a run of Julius Baer Pole Positions in Diriyah in his first outing on the desert circuit.

A challenge at “season seven”

After a turbulent 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, Sims decided to move to Mahindra Racing. The Indian manufacturer’s goal is to become world champion for the first time, no less, in the premiere campaign as World Championship endorsed by the FIA.

Despite these aspirations, so far it has not been so exciting for Alexander Sims. He is 15th in the overall standings and finished 22nd in the Puebla E-Prix, an event he enjoyed due to its innovation.

“Puebla is quite different to anything Formula E has done before, using part of a high-speed oval, and I think it was very interesting. It was a very loaded beginning on the competition with long curves we don’t usually see in this championship.”

“Having the rest of the season as dual race events is good. There’s so much effort in preparation, so it’s important to get more in terms of opportunities to get the fruits of that labor,” Sims finished.

Mahindra driver Alexander Sims noted that the Puebla track in Mexico is “quite extreme by Formula E standards” and that it will put an additional load on the tires over the weekend.

“I think the track is quite extreme for Formula E standards in terms of the amount of long, flowing corners that we’ve got here in Puebla,” said the 33-year-old.

He also pointed out that there are few straight lines on the track that will test the tires and the drivers’ ability to identify the exact moment of a tire change so that they do not decrease.

Sims expects to spend more time putting together the attack mode in Puebla compared to a more traditional street venue, and cautioned that drivers will rejoin the track at roughly the same speed as everyone else after enabling the extra power mode that the city offers. Formula E.

“I think it’s going to be a tough corner on 250kW in qualifying, especially at the end of the lap when the tyres are probably getting pretty hot and struggling I think 1.5s is sometimes the case when the attack mode is just offline on some corner configurations but this looks like it should be more, maybe 2-2.5s time loss,” explained the British on the “Attack Mode”.

Sims, who achieved his first podium as a Mahindra driver in Rome, has 24 points in the standings and 14th place in the table.

“I think there are going to be walls as well. So although we are on a permanent circuit it’s still going to be the same situation as all the other street tracks where you are going to be squeezed up against the wall. So that’s going to be critical to come out in clean air, “he said.

The 1.85-mile counterclockwise loop is only the second permanent track on the 2020/21 FE calendar after Valencia, which hosted a couple of events in April after having also run the only pre-season test late last year. .

Formula E will make its first visit to the Autodromo Miguel E. Abed this weekend. The series’ preferred location in Mexico City is not available for the races as it currently houses a temporary hospital for COVID-19 patients.

Following his period at BMW Andretti in his first two seasons in Formula E, Alexander Sims feels at home with the Mahindra Racing squad, becoming one of the main contenders in the championship.

In 2019-2020 Sims began his campaign with an incredible results, with a double pole and a victory in the first Riyadh match as the highlight, and headed to the break (due to the pandemic) third in the table of classification.

Later his results fell when the competition was resumed in Berlin and he ended up dropping 10 places. It was around this time that Sims ended his relationship with BMW and instead joined forces with a Mahindra Racing team that had just endured its first podium-free campaign since season one.

Team boss Dilbagh Gill pointed out that Alexander Sims started in Formula E when he was António da Costa (in his fifth season) teammate and in his first season he was very close to the Portuguese in terms of speed.

“If you look at their race pace, race averages, qualifying averages etc, they were really close. And today da Costa is considered the class of the field. Sims was his closest teammate ever – and that was in his first year,” he told Autosport.

Sims for his part, expresses feeling settled with the people around him and that the atmosphere in Mahindra is brilliant.

“It’s a nice feeling going into a race knowing into a race that if we can get the car balance right, if we can drive it right then the energy efficiency of the powertrain is going to be right up there with us,” said Alexander Sims.

Sims was at his best in the second half of the Rome double event, taking advantage of the group qualifying format to clinch a spot in the superpole, before delivering an excellent second place in the race.

“Everyone is incredibly hard working and experienced in motorsport to know how to work but equally there is a side to any relationship that just needs time and to understand the finer points of how I like to feel a racing car around a lap and how my engineers work. It just needs us to go through multiple race weekends,” expressed.

While they are still pursuing his first successful race, Mahindra is currently in a solid seventh place in the championship, just nine points behind the fourth-place Envision Virgin team. On the other hand, his former team BMW Andretti is at the bottom of the table with just 12 points after the first two weekends.
