Formula Eteams continue to make key moves ahead of season 9 of the series, which will see the debut of the Gen3 car, described by the competition’s promoters as the most powerful electric car in the world.

Mahindra Racing announced the hiring of Frederic Bertrand as the new Team Principal. Bertrand will bring with him all his experience after 10 years at the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA).

During his tenure at the world governing body of motorsport, he served as director of Formula E and innovative sports projects. In addition, he oversaw the integration of the Gen3 era in the championship as one of the main representatives of the organization.

Additionally, the Frenchman was also involved in the initiation of the FIA Motorsport Games project, which recently completed its second edition at Paul Ricard.

Following the aforementioned scroll, Bertrand will be in charge of overseeing Mahindra’s fortunes during the Gen3 period, in which the team opted for a revised driving lineup, adding 2016-17 Formula E champion Lucas di Grassi, who will pair with Oliver Rowland.

Motivation for the New Challenge

Following his appointment, Bertrand expressed his excitement at joining the team and leading an ambitious project within a series that is evolving year by year.

“I have had the privilege of witnessing the growth of the Mahindra Formula E team and I am proud that I have now been entrusted with leading the team to even better performance and results,” he said in statements released by Autosport.

The manager acknowledges that the task will not be easy in preparing everything concerning the new era of Formula E. “The next few months will be tough and will require a lot of hard work, but the goal is clearly to be up to speed in what promises to be an ultra-competitive field of manufacturers and teams.”

“It’s a new chapter and a big challenge in my career, and I can’t wait to get started,” he added. Bertrand’s previous involvement in the development of the Gen3 car is likely to be a bone of contention between other teams and Mahindra, although the route from the FIA to join a competing team has happened before within motorsport.

Through an official statement the FIA can confirmed that Bertrand resigned from his position to pursue other opportunities.

Mahindra Racing’s new model is claimed to be the most efficient in the world, generating 40% of the power it uses during a competition through regenerative braking.

A Quality Jump

For the members of Mahindra Racing, the novel single-seater will raise the bar in the electric category. “It’s a proud moment for us to take this car to Goodwood just a week after its first test,” noted Team Principal Dilbagh Gill.

“This is a testament to the team’s hard work, determination and passion to always strive to achieve what others see as unachievable. I am very much looking forward to seeing the car debut at an iconic event like Goodwood, representing the whole of Formula E as the series takes a step into its new era in 2023,” he added.

Season 8 of the ABB FIA Formula E is getting closer. Teams are getting ready to start off on the right foot, and one of the first steps to achieve this is revealing their single-seater. Mahindra Racing has been the latest to show the ‘weapon’ to attack in the upcoming campaign of the electrified division.

The presentation took place at the new ZF factory located in Birmingham, UK, where Dilbagh Gill, Team Principal; Asha Kharga, Customer and Brand Director of Mahindra & Mahindra; and drivers Alexander Sims and Oliver Rowland were on site to accompany the Indian team’s unveiling.

The M7Electro will once again use a ZF powertrain, with electronic transmission fluid developed by Shell, which is not surprising, as great results were evident on tracks since their partnership in season 7, so repeating ahead of the new campaign was an entirely predictable factor.

“On the cusp of a new season, we are delighted to unveil our new race car and are honored to introduce the new Mahindra & Mahindra Born EV logo and word mark. We head into our eighth year of competition revitalized and working hand-in-hand to maximize our package with the fantastic partners we have,” said Dilbagh Gill.

Mahindra Racing and Sustainability

Mahindra Racing calls itself as a manufacturer committed to the sustainable energy revolution, using all possible technology and knowledge extracted from Formula E to bring it to the streets through its brand and across the ‘Race to Road’ program.

On the other hand, they announced having received the ISO 14001: 2015 certification, which establishes the requirements for an environmental management system, which translates into helping to improve the role they play regarding environmental actions through efficient and conscious use of resources and waste.

About Mahindra Racing

Mahindra Racing is a founding team, and the only Indian squad, competing at the ABB FIA Formula E ABB World Championship, the world’s first all-electric street racing series. The team has an impressive stat sheet and is a multi-race winning team after claiming a major victory at the 2017 Berlin E-Prix.

The team is committed not only to pushing technology and innovation boundaries in the EV space, but also to addressing the impact of climate change; it was the first team in the category to receive the FIA’s three-star environmental accreditation rating, demonstrating best practices and excellence in sustainability.

After 40 Formula E participations, almost half of the races disputed since the start of the 2014-2015 season, the British driver Alexander Lynn got his first victory, two dates before the end of the current campaign.

The Mahindra Racing driver had a fairly clean race starting from third place which, along with a series of accidents, earned him maximum points at home.

Rowland and Vandoorne, who started second and first respectively, were involved in a series of contacts in the second London E-Prix and dropped to the bottom of the winners’ table.

Mahindra Racing celebration.

The race + accidents

A few minutes after the start, the first accident would come from driver Rene Rast, who collided with Swiss Sébastien Buemi’s single-seater, leaving the track and triggering the Safety Car. This happened when almost all drivers activated their first Attack Mode.

Due to the previous action, Buemi, who had a season to forget, was penalized with 10 seconds.

The second emergency car exit was for António Félix Da Costa, who suffered an impact with Lotterer and had to abandon the actions in London.

When the race restarted, Rowland would be one more victim of the accidents during the second London race.

Audi, Di Grassi and the controversy

With at least 22 minutes left to finish the battle, a situation arose causing great confusion among the spectators.

While Safety Car was on track after Da Costa’s accident, Audi Autosport ABT’s Lucas Di Grassi stepped into the pit lane. There, the Brazilian was expected to solve a problem.

However, despite having slowed down considerably, Di Grassi made a fraction of a millisecond stop and restarted driving to overtake the rest of the drivers (through the pitlane), appearing suddenly at first place when the emergency car exited, leaving the public in confusion until the final two minutes of the race.

So, the black flag came for Lucas and his team, who after appealing against a drive-through penalty for a long period of time, came to an end.

Finally, Di Grassi received a 20-second penalty dropping him to eighth place.

Di Grassi had a checkered flag, but later they would ratify the black flag.

The final destiny

On August 14 and 15, the Formula E season will come to an end at the Berlin double-header, where few drivers have aspirations of becoming champions.

Mahindra Racing is strengthening its bonds with its fans. The Formula E team launched a contest called “Driven by design”, inviting supporters to design the uniforms to be used by their drivers at the final London E-Prix.

Both Alexander Sims and Alex Lynn, starting drivers, were delighted with the fans’ response to the dynamic announced by the institution through its social networks.

“The high quality entries were really impressive and it was clear that people put a lot of thought and effort into their designs,” said Sims.

The Briton opted for Viyol Ezekiel Crasto’s creation, a graphic design student. The drawing features a star-shaped Union Jack flag and the Indian flag’s three colors.

“I liked the Indian and British color combination, as well as the cool interpretation of my logo. I liked the rectangles, plus the very sharp lines, which fit me well,” he explained.

In Lynn’s case, he chose a sketch inspired by geographic locations and history of their different cultures and traditions. “I love the lion and the navy blue color. I saw this design and it immediately caught my eye.”

“I really liked how the designer brought in all of those different elements, which all mean something to me and the team, and it’s perfect for my race at home,” Lynn added.

A Tradition

Since Formula E’s first season, Mahindra Racing has encouraged such initiatives to engage its fans within the demanding competition.

In addition of seeing their designs on track, the winners will also receive a signed replica of their race suits they wore on that weekend.

About the strategy, Dilbagh Gill, CEO of Mahindra Racing, noted, “This is a tremendously exciting opportunity for our creative and passionate fans to personally contribute to our drivers’ home race weekend in July.”

He assured that witnessing the incredible talent submitted over the past years, “Alex and Alexander had a hard time choosing their favorite designs.” The director also praised the great reception from fans, and applauded imagination in all the models received.

Alexander Sims hasn’t had it all since he arrived in Formula E. He got a solid start, setting very good times in his debut season, but has not been able to establish himself as a star driver. However, the teams belonging to the innovative electric car category continue to rely on the skills of the British driver, who has already accumulated three seasons.

In addition, the racer has been an activist in everything related to electric technology, and is strongly committed to renewable energies, environmental protection and sustainability, so the competition fits him like a glove.

Sims was born in England on March 15, 1988 and started driving when he was only 10 years old in Karting. His most important achievements include the McLaren Autosport BRDC Award, a prize that recognizes young talent in the United Kingdom.

In ’99 he made his flamboyant debut in Formula 3, where he combined single-seater driving with GT and sportscar racing in series such as Blancpain Endurance, British GT and the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans. Between 2011 and 2013 he made his appearance in the also renowned GP3 Series.

He arrived to Formula E in 2018-2019 season and remained for 2019-2020 with BMW, teaming up with Maximilian Guenther. The Brit resumed his rise in the all-electric series with a run of Julius Baer Pole Positions in Diriyah in his first outing on the desert circuit.

A challenge at “season seven”

After a turbulent 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, Sims decided to move to Mahindra Racing. The Indian manufacturer’s goal is to become world champion for the first time, no less, in the premiere campaign as World Championship endorsed by the FIA.

Despite these aspirations, so far it has not been so exciting for Alexander Sims. He is 15th in the overall standings and finished 22nd in the Puebla E-Prix, an event he enjoyed due to its innovation.

“Puebla is quite different to anything Formula E has done before, using part of a high-speed oval, and I think it was very interesting. It was a very loaded beginning on the competition with long curves we don’t usually see in this championship.”

“Having the rest of the season as dual race events is good. There’s so much effort in preparation, so it’s important to get more in terms of opportunities to get the fruits of that labor,” Sims finished.

Despite the fact that season seven of Formula E is still ongoing, this situation has not been an impediment to start making movements for the eighth harvest to be held in 2022.

In this case, it is the Nissan e.dams driver, Oliver Rowland, who, according to The Race, will leave the team to join the ranks of Mahindra Racing.

According to the report, it is estimated that Rowland’s contract with the Indian team would be multi-year, and would be returning to a steering wheel that was already reinforced in 2015. At that time, the British had a participation with the organization in Punta del Este, Uruguay, replacing Nick Heidfeld who was absent from that race due to injury.

Related content: Jutta Kleinschmidt will compete permanently with ABT CUPRA XE

After taking over from Heidfeld, Rowland focused on his career in GP2, until the 2018-2019 season opened for him as a star at Nissan.

Rowland’s signing came after the team’s deal with Alexander Albon was canceled after receiving a call to strengthen Toro Rosso in Formula 1.

Bet on English talent

Although Mahindra Racing is of Indian origin, the team moved its factory to England where they have invested large sums of money in recent years, and are now betting on a driver from that country. In addition, Mahindra is the first team to adopt the Gen3 rules of Formula E, which will apply from 2022.

The Race reveals in its post that negotiations between Mahindra and the 28-year-old racer have been ongoing for the past month and it is unknown what will happen to current drivers Alexander Sims and Alex Lynn.

Both have managed to get on the podium this season. Sims was runner-up in the E-Prix in Rome, while Lynn finished third in the E-Prix in Valencia, so the news surprised everyone.

However, Sims is 15th in the standings with 36 points, while Lynn is 16th, four points behind his partner.

The information about Rowland’s departure from Nissan transcends after the pilot declared after the Puebla race that in the team “there is a great atmosphere. Always belonging to one of the top teams in Formula E is a great experience. We try to ensure that everyone’s effort goes in the same direction, it is one of the things that I would highlight the most”.

So far, there has been no official communication from those involved to confirm or deny the information.

Formula E has an excellent grid of drivers that make the “season seven” one of the most exciting seasons since the premiere of the electric category. One of them is Britain’s Alexander Lynn, who drives the Mahindra Racing car.

Born in London, Lynn began his way on the tracks in 2009 at Formula Renault in the United Kingdom, where he finished in 10th place. In 2011 he showed his class with an impressive record of 12 wins to win the title. The title earned him the nomination as the best driver of the year in Great Britain at the prestigious Autosport awards.

After conquering Formula Renault, Lynn made the leap to the British F3 Series in 2012, a category in which he finished third during his debut. In 2013, he reached the FIA European f3 Championship, where he finished with a major triumph at the outstanding Macau Grand Prix.

In 2014, the Englishman followed his rise in motorsports with participation in the GP2 Series. There he held the manufacturers’ championship with DAMS. Additionally, Lynn served as a development driver for Williams Martini Racing.

His arrival in the electrical category

A call came in 2017 that would draw Lynn into the world of motorsports with a sustainable goal. The Briton was signed by DS Virgin Racing to make his Formula E appearance.

He debuted at the New York E-Prix and took his first pole position, but withdrew from both races due to car failures. Then, in 2018, he joined the Jaguar Racing team and at the same time performed functions as a factory driver for Aston Martin, attached to the World Endurance Championship program.

In 2020, when Lynn found himself out of the electric category, the Mahindra team contacted him to fill in the discharge of Pascal Wehrlein, who signed with Porsche. He competed for six races of the 11 scheduled, in an atypical season interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. In the end, he finished in 17th place in the overall ranking.

He was confirmed by Mahindra for the current season due to the rally achieved in the previous eventful contest. “I am incredibly excited to return for the seventh season of Formula E and to be part of the Mahindra team,” Lynn said upon ratification.

He said he is satisfied with the M7Electro, Mahindra’s official vehicle with which he wants to reach the top of the podium, but for this he must overcome tough obstacles on the grid, against experienced drivers and teams with great technology that seek to fill themselves with glory.
