The battle for great electric vehicle battery solutions continues. Several companies, whether small, medium or large, are working on optimal solutions to ensure and enhance the future of electric mobility. QuantumScape has taken a major step forward with the unveiling of its latest study.

The battery dilemma is difficult to explain and complicated to solve. The more charge and discharge cycles a battery provides, the more it wears out. The longer it takes to replenish energy, the faster its life decay accelerates. If you provide charges that take a long time to replenish power, the longer it will last, but that holding factor is not entirely pleasant.

QuantumScape has offered a technological study that promises hundreds of charge and discharge cycles in only 15 minutes, with no damage to the battery, according to the company acquired by Volkswagen for 85 million euros.

The company’s solid-state battery cells offer the power to regenerate energy from 10% to 80% in 15 minutes. The study successfully demonstrated that such a process was replicated 400 times consecutively. Taking the data to a real road vehicle with a range of 640 kilometers, it could execute fast recharges to provide about 256,000 kilometers of travel.

The solid electrolyte ceramic separation system offered by the company claims it can correct this problem, arguing that the technology currently employed on this section is sensitive, affecting battery performance and life.

About QuantumScape

QuantumScape is developing next-generation solid-state Lithium Metal batteries for use in electric vehicles. They are on a mission to change the energy storage paradigm by developing an entirely new class of electrical energy storage device.

The battery development to continue advancing towards electric mobility does not cease. A group of researchers has put their hands to work on a solid-state silicon battery, and to their surprise, the stability reflected during the studies has been a pleasant impression that can be taken to a higher level.

Silicon has the ability to provide through its anode a high energy density; in fact, it can be 10 times higher than anodes formed by a graphite structure. However, each time it is mixed or combined with a liquid electrolyte, it suffers considerable degradation affecting performance.

Therefore, the researchers were surprised after successfully showing signs of stability above 60 degrees Celsius, allowing fast charging speeds at a low temperature. It is worth noting that solid-state batteries have always shown limitations on the recharge rate after using Lithium Metal anodes.

The nanostructure specialists who carried out the research at the University of San Diego were able to overcome up to 10 times the charging and discharging cycles of the silicon battery with a solid electrolyte in comparison with conventional Lithium batteries, since up to 500 times it fulfilled their function by providing 80% of the total capacity.

Related Content: Ford Partners with Redwood Materials to Establish Battery Recycling Program

The success of this project is due in part to the replacement of the liquid electrolyte with a sulfur-based solid one, providing highly significant stability to silicon anode batteries. It was long thought that this would not be possible because of the interpretations of thermodynamics employed that failed to account for the kinetic stability of solid electrolytes. “We needed a totally different approach,” said Shirley Meng, Nanoengineering Professor at the University of San Diego.

“With this battery configuration, we are opening up a new territory for solid-state batteries employing alloy anodes like silicon. The result gives us exciting opportunities to meet market demands: batteries with higher volumetric energy, reduced costs, and safer,” said Darren HS Tan, Lead Author of the paper.

One of the priorities for electric mobility is to speed up battery recharging time. However, reducing the waiting time to 90 seconds would seem crazy, but it is starting to take shape after all, as a Lithium-carbon prototype has been introduced with the function of replenishing energy in just a minute and a half.

This has been made possible by Mahle Powertrain and Allotrope Energy after working together and conducting tests on a combination of supercapacitors and Lithium-ion batteries, offering twofold benefits. The first is the speed to regenerate its power, while the second is to become a 100% recyclable part.

The technology applied on this project offers an energy density of 60 Wh/Kg, which is not so overwhelming, but compensates by retaining strength over charge and discharge cycles, something that conventional Lithium-ion batteries can not afford at this time.

The shape is based on a high-speed anode and a high-speed double-layer cathode. Both elements are separated by an organic electrolyte. Such a structure and way of operating does not allow thermal degradation over time, freeing engineers to claim that a high-current supply can be carried out and energy subsequently replenished without running an external and complex cooling process.

“Range anxiety is often cited as the main barrier to electric vehicle adoption, but if the battery can be recharged over the same time it takes to refuel a conventional IC engine vehicle, much of that concern disappears,” said Dr. Mike Bassett, head of research at MAHLE Powertrain.

On the other hand, the lifespan of the Lithium-Carbon battery has been pegged at more than 100,000 cycles, authoritatively surpassing the amounts offered by those currently available on the market. Now, it should be noted that the purpose of the project was to provide power to electric motorcycles for food delivery, enabling the work of this type of vehicle without interrupting production.

Finally, the date of manufacture of the Lithium-Carbon battery is unknown, but what is certain is that the results have been totally positive, and for sure, the creators will evaluate the possibility of taking it to the next level: to apply the benefits on small, medium and large vehicles.

EcoFlow Delta mini, this is the name of the new creation that has arrived to provide electric energy for hours, being an easy to carry portable device with the capacity to satisfy the needs of several equipments at the same time over hours, becoming from now on a very useful device for home (and out of it).

It has 1,260 Wh capacity and 1,800 W output power. The technology is nothing more than an NCM Lithium-ion battery with a high nickel content. Due to its high energy density, it can easily act as an emergency generator in case of a power failure, activating just 30 milliseconds after the outage.

According to the creators, at its maximum capacity it can charge a camera 35 times, a drone 12 times or power a TV for 6 hours. When charging it, you can choose to connect it to the electric grid, where it will be replenished from 0 to 80% in one hour, or use solar panels.

Ideal to go camping and leave the chaos of the city, or take it anywhere. The truth is that because of the extensive features it can be of great help to every family, but the big detail is the price, $ 1,000, but surely it is worth investing in something like the EcoFlow Delta mini.

Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL) has embraced the advantages of sodium-lithium batteries to offer a unified end product integrating both technologies through individual cells, creating a hybrid package for high performance in use.

The sodium’s low temperatures without losing optimal and adequate performance have been combined with the lithium’s energy density and power to create a final product with high performance. In order to get to this result, however, the company dedicated years of research to make the batteries viable.

One of the drawbacks that CATL faced was to compensate for the high volume of sodium ions compared to lithium ions, which meant having to use highly demanding materials in order to maintain structural stability along with their kinetic properties, because when combining them, energy was lost, causing degradation problems in the charge and discharge process.

Related content: BASF to Build New Battery Recycling Plant at Cathode Materials Plant in Germany

After spending a long time trying to find an answer, CATL unveiled the first generation of sodium battery cells, modifying the components along with the structure to provide high performance at low temperatures, a fast charging system and thermal stability which was ” impossible” to crack in the past.

The company is confident about the promising results of sodium-ion cells, though on the other hand, they also claim that this technology is not capable of surpassing the performance of lithium-ion cells at the moment. During the ‘TechZone’ event, however, they stated that the biggest benefit comes when recharging them.

For comparison, these cells generate up to 160 Wh/kg, while the lithium-ion batteries used on a Tesla can reach up to 300 Wh/kg. The advantage lies in the low temperature, reaching 80% of their energy capacity in 15 minutes at ambient climate.

Besides, CATL batteries can perform at 90% in sub-zero temperatures, being a more than interesting project for those countries with freezing temperatures due to their strong winter periods.

What is CATL?

CATL is a Chinese company founded in 2011 with headquarters in Ningde, dedicated to developing energy solutions worldwide, and leading the lithium-ion battery sales in 2017, as the company revealed in its annual sales report.

The manufacturer finally aims to have a manufacturing sodium-ion batteries process by 2023, considering they currently want to continue discovering new aspects and boosting existing ones to raise the energy density up to 200 Wh/kg.
