E1 Series confirmed through its social networks that the city of Rotterdam, The Netherlands, will host a pre-season event in 2023, as a preview to the big debut that the 100% electric powerboat category expects to make.

A high-caliber exhibition is expected to be held at the location to showcase some of what will be seen in action when the series officially debuts. Likewise, the city has the potential to host the championship in the coming years.

The announcement comes shortly after several revelations that are shaping the category created by Alejandro Agag and Rodi Basso, which will aim to transform maritime mobility to give a sustainable value to this section through sustainable motorsports.

What We Know about E1 Series So Far

Sergio ‘Checo’ Perez, Red Bull’s Mexican Formula 1 driver, will have his own team in E1 Series, where he aspires to be part of this sustainable boat transition, as well as hopes to enhance the Mexican flag in another racing competition.

On the other hand, Venice has been confirmed as the place to host a race of the category. Also, there will be a team called Venice Racing Team, in charge of the businessman Francesco Pannoli and which already has its first confirmed driver: Gianluca Carli.

E1 Series works together with Victory Marine for the construction of the boat, where the design is in charge of Sophi Horne, while the battery that will power the RaceBird will be courtesy of Kreisel Electric.

Since its announcement, E1 Series has created great expectations for how it can impact the planet in a sustainable way, while creating a unique precedent as the first 100% electric powerboat competition.

Time moves forward, and so does the work. As the weeks go by, the arrival of new teams willing to contribute to the construction of a sustainable maritime future is confirmed, and while that is happening, the category further increases the expectations of the series after releasing a one-minute trailer, but quite complete about what is about to happen.

Spring 2023 will officially see the first E1 Series race, made up of 12 teams and 24 drivers visiting 10 locations worldwide to send a message that transcends the sporting, and this is how Alejandro Agag, one of the creators of this new sport, describes it: “The series has a goal that goes far beyond sports”.

“Today, the only solution for the future is electric propulsion,” says Rodi Basso, co-creator with Agag of E1 Series. His assertions make a lot of sense in a world that fights to reduce the environmental temperature to avoid non-reversible consequences caused by the climate change, and in view of this, one of the measures for the environmental conservation is to reduce the carbon footprint, but also to preserve the marine ecosystems.

The oceans play a fundamental role in this battle after absorbing the temperature of the atmosphere and maintaining the balance, however, currently the capabilities to perform this task are affected due to the current increasing pace of life that people lead, therefore, the idea of E1 Series consists of immense value.

“Just as Formula E and Extreme E promote electric vehicles, E1 Series wants to promote electric boats,” Agag points out, as well as describing the impact the races will have on sports enthusiasts. “Imagine the cities in the background as the boats race at top speed, side by side in tight turns. It will be a global hit.”

All this and more is perfectly described in the latest trailer for the E1 Series, the 100% electric boat series.

Through an official press release, E1 Series announced the entry of Sergio ‘Checo’ Perez to the 100% electric powerboat championship. The Formula 1 driver will have his own team in the series, called “Team Mexico”, for the inaugural season of the new maritime racing division.

In this way, the colors of the Mexican flag will be represented in this new racing sports division that seeks to promote environmental sustainability, as well as the conservation and care of marine ecosystems.

“I am very excited about the prospect of becoming a new team owner in E1 to represent Mexico in the E1 Series,” said Checo regarding his inclusion among the 12 teams that will bring the championship to life.

Sergio Pérez Team México (Photo: E1 Series)

It is worth mentioning that the Mexican and Alejandro Agag, creator of E1 Series, know each other since the GP2 circuits (currently Formula 2), due to the fact that ‘Checo’ raced for the Barwa Addax team in 2010, where the Spaniard was the Team Director and owner. In that season, Perez finished as runner-up in the category behind Venezuela’s Pastor Maldonado.

“Given my relationship with Alejandro, I have been following closely what he has been doing and his various championships. To see a race team fly the Mexican flag on a world stage will be incredible and I can’t wait to see the RaceBird in action for the first time. I have heard many positive stories about the boat and the exciting sporting product that E1 Series is trying to create for the fans with events in the city,” continued ‘Checo’.

On the other hand, Agag also expressed his satisfaction after having the figure of Perez within the championship. “Checo and I have remained close friends since we worked together during our GP2 days. In a funny way, it feels a bit like things have come full circle, I signed him as a driver and now Sergio joined his own team in E1 Series.”

Sergio Pérez (Photo: Red Bull Racing)

At the moment, the drivers who will represent Team Mexico are unknown. However, the inclusion of Sergio Perez in the 100% electric powerboat category will draw the attention of the Mexican public and much of Latin America to what this new sustainable series hopes to demonstrate over the next few years.

The talent of Sergio Perez

Sergio Perez currently races for Red Bull in Formula 1. During his extensive experience in the category he has proven to be an incredible driver, with great tire management as his main characteristic. Aggressive when he needs to be, but passive when it’s time to wait, were a notch of what Christian Horner saw in him to make him Max Verstappen’s teammate.

Sergio Pérez (Photo: Red Bull Racing)

He is undoubtedly going through his best year in F1 in terms of performance, reflecting a great story of overcoming after almost being left without a seat in the Grand Circus two seasons ago (after Aston Martin’s decision to hire Sebastian Vettel), but now he looks like one of the strongest on the current grid.

Between tests and exhibitions have passed the last weeks of E1 Series, the 100% electric powerboat championship that prepares for its debut in 2023, where gradually has been revealing important details regarding the completion of the series. One of them has been the confirmation of Gianluca Carli as the first driver to be officially announced.

The news was revealed after E1 Series was in Venice for an exhibition of the RaceBird, the vehicle that will bring the championship to life. The place was the right place for such revelation, since months ago the first team to be part of the division of the seas was known: Venice Racing Team, which will count on Carli’s talent behind the wheel.

Gianluca is considered one of the most talented drivers to have ever competed in powerboats on the international circuit. Born in 1990, he has everything at his disposal to succeed in the championship created by Alejandro Agag and Rodi Basso, where marine ecosystem restoration and conservation is the main reason to compete.

The E1 Series vision

The next step in sustainability according to Alejandro Agag is to electrify the water. After his resounding success at the helm of Formula E and Extreme E, in collaboration with Rodi Basso he will seek to establish a world championship that highlights the most important element for life and existence on Earth.

The races aim to entertain speed lovers, but at the same time use the sport as an educational platform about what is happening in the world with respect to climate change. In addition, exposing what is happening will not be all, as proposing solutions and taking action for the preservation of the ecosystem is also part of the E1 Series agenda.

E1 Series took the RaceBird to the water for the first time, as part of the tests conducted on the 100% electric boat category vehicle. The Po River, near San Nazzaro in Northern Italy, was the location selected to put the marine racing vehicle to the test.

Former Powerboat World Champion, Luca Ferrari, was at the wheel conducting runs to collect data needed to further develop the boat. Evaluating the overall performance, reliability, and the various electrical components were part of the processes carried out in Italian territory.

The tests will continue to be carried out during the next few weeks, where straight-line races, qualifying simulations and races will be evaluated. Knowing the different competition situations the RaceBird will face will be an important aspect to be evaluated by the E1 Series team.

The electric racing boat was designed by Sophi Horne, which is powered by a 150 kW Kreisel battery, an engine courtesy of Mercury Racing. The hydrofoil technology makes the vehicle protrude a few inches out of the water avoiding friction and drag, favoring the chase between one and the other without being affected by the wake of the water.

“Putting the RaceBird in the water for the first time is a pivotal moment for the E1 Series World Championship. We are now one step closer to making electric racing on the water a reality. I remember very well the same scenarios we encountered during the early stages in both Formula E and Extreme E, and just like on those occasions, this is a major step forward in the category’s journey,” said Alejandro Agag, co-founder and president of E1 Series.

“I have been waiting for this moment for almost three years! To finally get to this point is a huge sigh of relief, but I am also very proud of what we have accomplished with the combined efforts of SeaBird and Victory Marine. Watching them lower the boat into the water and away… that will stay with me for a long time,” said Sophi Horne.

E1 Series is progressing to consolidate the category ahead of its official debut. One of the aspects on which they are working hard is the circuit creation, race maps and the route that the boats will take while competing against each other, because beyond assuring the show, it will be important not to damage the seabed.

One of the reasons that led Alejandro Agag and Rodi Basso to move the races to the water is to electrify the most important element for life on Earth. Therefore, getting to the designated places and then racing without leaving a trace will be vital to the success of the first 100% electric boat category.

Through the documentary that chronicles the development of the series, Inside E1, Shelley Jory-Leigh, British Powerboat Racing World Champion, showed what the category’s plan is when it comes to laying out the circuit course, with challenging straights and curves that will test the riders’ skills.

Different layouts and maps have been discussed so far, where the series has revealed details about possible designs that so far are only proposals. Undoubtedly, it will be a demanding route for the pilots, but with the peace of mind that they are working on solutions so that the impact on lakes, rivers or seas is minimal.

Track concept (Photo: E1 Series)

However, not affecting the seabed is a task to be worked on, which has carried out multiple tests in Southampton with respect to buoys. The traditional buoys use anchors and chains that hurt the seabed and the vegetation found there, therefore, E1 Series will use technology to implement buoys that do not require these elements without the disadvantage of being dragged by the sea stream.

“Traditional buoys have anchors that damage the seabed, while smart tags are autonomous, which means they retain their position even with strong currents,” said Marcus Prosses, Operations Director for the category.

E1 Series prepares its entry into motorsport with a unique, innovative proposal that will surely captivate the attention of many people. Rodi Basso is one of the masterminds behind the project as co-founder together with Alejandro Agag, a sustainability pioneer and electric categories such as Formula E and Extreme E.

For Basso the outlook is clear: “The future is electric, it’s not an option, it’s a responsibility”. That was one of the many true sentences offered during the first episode of the documentary (Inside E1) showing E1 Series internally. Everyone is working together to create something unique to make a positive impact on the planet.

“We want to celebrate an important element of our history: water. We are pushing the boundaries of technology in pursuit of a better world.” The water electrification challenge is not an easy one, but projects like this open the door and clear a path to making it happen.

Alejandro Agag and Rodi Basso (Photo: E1 Series)

Related content: Sophi Horne: The Star Behind the E1 Series RaceBird

For this, teamwork is important, especially having people who are 100% dedicated to the project, and believe in what they are contributing to bring E1 Series to life. “We want to build a global championship. It’s great to see all the people, the motivation reflected in their eyes about what is happening.

Alongside Rodi Basso is Alejandro Agag, who has also transferred all his ingenuity to be present at a new sustainable category, but this time without wheels. “The goal is to create a platform to connect all the changes taking place. We are doing something completely pioneering. The new adventure is E1.”

Agag’s proposal is captivating, to see an exciting electric boat race on the most important element for life to exist on Earth, accompanied by the best natural landscapes. “Imagine the bottom of a city, the Amazon jungle or Antarctica. E1 wants to bring electric boat racing to rivers, lakes, oceans.”

Rodi is aware that this is more than just a new sport, so anticipation is at high levels ahead of the 2023 debut, where a new page will undoubtedly begin to be written in terms of sport, purpose and sustainability.

Alejandro Agag (Photo: E1 Series)

“I don’t want to box it into just a sporting event, there is so much more there, so much in terms of legacy, impact, in how we will partner with our entire supply chain and organization, in order to contribute to a more sustainable future; something very important to us. I would say design by design, from the concept of the championship to the boat itself”.

A few months ago, Alejandro Agag and Rodi Basso surprised with the E1 Series announcement, the first 100% electric boat racing category.

The sensation effect was immediate, the expectation grew as the days went by until the official vehicle was revealed. Now, the countdown to its 2023 debut is beginning to wind down. However, this year will see the beginning of on-water tests that will give life to a new division of motorsport.

The objective of the division is to promote electrified powerboat racing, offering an unparalleled spectacle in large, imposing and beautiful settings around the world without forgetting the main goal: to echo sustainability at the marine level and, above all, to demonstrate how important it is for the ecosystem’s balance.

Twelve teams and ten locations are waiting for 2023, as well as motorsport fans. The RaceBird will be the main weapon of the E1 Series, an electrified boat designed by Sophi Horne, which besides being eye pleasing due to its aesthetic aspects, turns out to be a power machine on the inside.

This is the RaceBird from the Driver’s Perspective

Seven meters long by three meters wide, strong and light enough to move easily on the water. It weighs just 800 kilograms and can develop up to 50 knots of force. “It was about designing something that goes with nature and not against it,” Horne said about his creation.

RaceBird’s cockpit (Photo: E1 Series)

In addition, the RaceBird will bring with it hydrofoil technology, making the boat stick out of the water to decrease as much friction, drag force or blockage as possible. Also, being inches in lift will make it easier for pilots to fight each other without being affected by the slipstream caused by the electric motor.

Also, Sophi Horne had the opportunity to climb into her creation and experience what it’s like to be at the pilot’s seat. A spectacular first-person view was revealed by E1 Series weeks ago. The cockpit has a closed design, as if it were an army jet, giving an aggressive yet elegant impression of what is to come when the action finally begins in the various locations that the category has prepared.

“We believe it will be a big impact within motorsport. Just like Formula E or Extreme E, the E1 Series will be groundbreaking and will drive development. It will take time to make a drastic change in marine mobility, but we need to start the process somewhere, so we need to use the sport as a platform to create this change,” said Agag when the boat was unveiled.
