Just when major motorsport competitions are on break for Christmas eve, Ducati surprises the world with the appearance of their electric motorcycle designed for MotoE.

Despite the fact that the contract signed by the Italian brand with Dorna Sports, the event organizer, is from 2023, the Marco Simoncelli circuit at Misano witnessed the first laps of the novel creation.

The “V21L” electric motorcycle prototype is the result of the joint work of the Ducati Corse team and R&D engineers, led by Roberto Canè, Director of Ducati eMobility, and was taken to the track by Michele Pirro, the company’s test rider since 2013, who evaluated the technical characteristics and potential of the vehicle.

A Dream Come True

Canè assured that Ducati is living a truly extraordinary moment. “I find it hard to believe that it is a reality and that it is not yet a dream. The first electric Ducati on the track is exceptional, not only for its uniqueness but how challenging both in terms of performance targets and extremely short timescales.”

He highlighted the work of the entire team on the project, the results of which reward the effort made over the past few months. He emphasized that although it is not finished yet, they have placed an important first “brick”.

Pirro, for his part, said that testing the MotoE prototype on the circuit was very exciting because it marks the beginning of a vital chapter of Ducati’s history.

“The bike is light and already has a good balance. Also, the throttle linkage in the first opening phase and the ergonomics are very similar to those of a MotoGP bike. If it weren’t for the silence and the fact that on this test we decided to limit the power output to only 70% of the performance, I would have easily imagined I was riding my bike,” he described.

The most important challenges involved in the development of an electric racing motorcycle are still related to size, weight and battery range. Ducati CEO Claudio Domenicali explained that the goal is to make high-performance, lightweight electric motorcycles available to all participants in the FIM Enel MotoE World Cup.

The focus of the project is, in addition to better performance, weight containment and consistency of power delivery during the race, obtained thanks to attention to the development of a cooling system suitable for the targets.

With the presence at the tournament, Ducati seeks to develop a kind of laboratory to study and prepare new options. The technology of batteries, inverters and electric powertrain are evolving rapidly and the Italian brand will be at the forefront to experiment, develop and be ready for the new era.

The FIM Enel MotoE World Cup has already given a glimpse of what will be the fourth season by introducing a provisional calendar, still subject to change.

It is composed of seven days, with the major novelty of having a double race on all of them. This will bring MotoE to 14 dates in one season, doubling the seven dates in 2020 and 2021, and comfortably surpassing the six in 2019. During all those campaigns, the tournament only had a double race at Misano.

The riders will have up to six test days during the preseason, all of them at the Circuito de Jerez-Ángel Nieto. The first days will be held from March 7 to 9, and one month later, from April 11 to 13.

Spain will Host the Debut Again

The same Andalusian track will host the first round of the season, coinciding with the Spanish Grand Prix, from April 30 to May 1, where two races will be held.

Two weeks later, the second round will take place at Le Mans, and in May, the third round will be held at Mugello from the 28th to the 29th.

At the end of June, it will be the turn for the visit to the mythical TT Circuit of Assen, the Netherlands, before the new Finnish track of KymiRing in mid-July.

Misano is Back to Decide All

After a month’s break, from 20 to 21 August, the MotoE stars will land at the Red Bull Ring to match the Austrian GP. Finally, at the beginning of September – from 3 to 4 – the season will come to an end at the Misano Marco Simoncelli World Circuit, where the exciting “season finale” will take place.

In addition to the calendar, the electric motorcycle series announced changes on the qualifying format, which will adopt a rhythm quite similar to that of Moto3, Moto2 and MotoGP.

Riders will participate on two free practice sessions starting on Fridays. The MotoE high commission made these adjustments with the aim of simplifying the understanding of the discipline and, above all, to offer more equitable rounds of competition for all riders.

What remains unchanged is the racing duration, which in principle will continue to be very short. Energica, the sole supplier of bikes for the championship, will leave the category at the end of the season to bring in Ducati, a modification that could increase the autonomy.

Since it arrived in 2019 until the upcoming 2022 season, the interest, growth and solidification has been considerable, therefore, it has everything going for it to grow and become a pioneer of electrified bike racing.

Summary: WES World E-Bike Series arrives as an innovative series where adrenaline, sustainability and speed are present at all times.

The announcement of the entry of Ducati as the new official supplier of the MotoE fell by surprise since, only in 2018 did it present its first electric model.

Despite the unexpected, there are very high expectations about what may be presented by the Italian manufacturer, which although it is true that it has not unveiled all the details, it does offer lights about what will be the goal with the new prototypes that will jump on the tracks from 2023.

Unlike Energica, Ducati will begin by not starting with production models and then developing electric racing motorcycles, but will first launch into competition and from there will later develop large-scale two-wheelers. The MotoE will serve as a magnificent test bench, so Clauidio Domenicalli, CEO of the Italian firm is clear that this new adventure will mark a before and after in Ducati in the company.

Innovative Testing

For Domenicali, the arrival of the electric motorcycle series is an important step because they will continue on the path of new technologies for the future, including production bikes.

“At Ducati it’s all about performance, that’s why we decided to enter electric mobility from the top. There is no better way than to do it in competition to learn and gain experience. Everyone agrees that our engine in MotoGP is one of the fastest, so we want to transfer that experience to electric propulsion,” said the manager.

Despite the secrecy, Ducati has vented that the plan is already underway and ambitiously aims to improve on the very high bar set by Energica in the first three seasons.

The two main objectives of Domenicali’s staff and the first ones on the roadmap are to have much lighter bikes and batteries with a greater autonomy. “We have already done some tests and experiments to try to understand when the time was right. In motorcycles the main problem is weight, so in our program we want to make the bike as light as possible,” explained the Ducati leader

He reiterated that the biggest challenge is to make a prototype that is not heavily loaded, but has a good range. “Batteries are the fuel of an electric bike and in terms of weight in quite high, so that’s the main challenge. We need to understand how to make the best use of energy taking into account energy regeneration, inverter efficiency and, above all, chemistry.

To achieve these goals Ducati has two important pillars to evolve: their extensive experience of almost two decades in MotoGP, where they are the pinnacle of innovation, and the potential and advantages of being part of the Volkswagen Group, from where they can draw important doses of knowledge about electric mobility.

“Some Group brands are closer to us than others. The team with a center of excellence for batteries and we are discussing very closely with them, but that complex is mainly related to series production cars, mainly VW and Audi. So we are also working very closely with the sportier brands like Porsche and Lamborghini,” Domenicali detailed.

Key Year

2022 is shaping up to be a pivotal year, as it will be when they will carry out all the testing and development of this model before 2023 when the MotoE grid takes over.

“We will use next year to finish all the development of the bike, also on track, to arrive in 2023 with a proven project that also complies with all the important safety rules. We want to achieve the performance that Dorna has asked of us,” Domenicali concluded.

Reactions continue to pour out about Ducati’s arrival as a new MotoE supplier starting from 2023, following Energica’s announcement to end their relationship with the electric category after supporting it since the beginning.

Herve Poncharal, Tech 3 Team Manager, welcomes the addition of the Italian company, assuring that the competition will grow to a new level. He believes that the advances in electric mobility are improving rapidly and Ducati joins the automotive and motorcycle industries that are working flat out on all the innovations.

“Our new partner will use the latest technology. The current motorcycle concept is six or seven years old, so expect interesting new developments for the upcoming tournaments,” he said.

Read also: MotoE: Jordi Torres and Mattia Casadei will be a Fearsome Duo at PONS Racing

Energica had turned the Ego street motorcycle into a racing version, while Ducati is going the opposite way by developing a motorsports vehicle, likely to be produced in the future for urban use.

“The concept that we will have in 2023 is going to be developed over the next year. We can expect a faster, lighter and more competitive motorcycle,” Poncharal stresses. The leader is convinced that MotoE will change with Ducati as a partner, since already Energica’s lap times as a manufacturer are at Moto3 level.

What do Changes Entail?

In Energica, MotoGP promoter Dorna had found an ally in the World Championship, and that is now changing with Ducati, a situation that could have indirect consequences for other categories.

For example, it is unclear whether riders in the Endurance World Championship (EWC) who participate there with a different brand can also ride MotoE with Ducati at the same time, or whether that would be prohibited by Yamaha, Suzuki, BMW, among others.

Currently in MotoE there are private teams like Tech 3, LCR and One Energy, which in MotoGP have close ties with KTM, Honda and Yamaha respectively. That could also be politically sensitive and generate conflict of interest.

Against this backdrop, LCR Team Leader, Lucio Cecchinello, who is also a long-time Honda partner, points out that despite their commitments to other brands, they respect the move made by Dorna Sports, MotoE’s main promoter, to ally with Ducati. “We have to respect this step, because they provide us with the motorcycles. We only have a partnership with Dorna,” he emphasized.

“We are very happy to be able to participate in MotoE and our plan is to continue because it is an interesting category. We are learning about new technologies that can play a more important role in the future,” Cecchinello stressed.

What is certain is that the decision has already been made and it is expected that with the presence of Ducati, MotoE will reach its highest point not only in terms of motorcycle performance, but also in terms of attracting fans and popularity.

The successful path achieved by Jordi Torres with PONS Racing team in MotoE, by winning two World Championships in the electric category, earned him a juicy contract renewal.

In his record, apart from the two world titles, Torres has achieved two victories, eight podiums and six pole positions in 14 races. With the signing of the new agreement, the Spaniard will once again fight from the start to become the FIM Enel MotoE World Cup champion for the third time in a row.

“I am very happy to announce my renewal with PONS Racing for the next season in the MotoE World Cup. I want to thank Sito Pons for giving me the opportunity to race in this great team, with which we have already become champions in 2020 and 2021,” said Torres.

He made special mention to the technicians, mechanics and the rest of the team members for the great work that has led him to the top of the electric motorcycle series.

Torres assured that he feels strong and ready to fight for a new title and highlighted the growth that MotoE has had in such a short time, a tournament in which he would like to remain for many more years.

Casadei Joins the Team

Italian Mattia Casadei, who was with Paolo Simoncelli’s Ongetta SIC58 team until the 2021 season, is taking a new direction to join Torres at PONS Racing.

Casadei, only 22 years old, will face his fourth season in MotoE, a race in which he has six podiums and finished sixth in the overall standings last season.

PONS Racing will give him the necessary tools to continue his evolution as a rider, and to take a step forward that will allow him to be one of the main players in the category.

“I am very happy to join a team as strong as this and with so much history. They have always had good drivers, references and are the current champions of the category, I am very motivated to achieve great results, “said Mattia.

A Competitive Plan

Sito Pons, Team Director, expressed his pride at the presentation of the sporting project for next season. “Since this new category of sustainable and electric motorcycles was born, we understood that it is the future and our bet has always been to win, and we have proved it, with two consecutive titles together with Jordi Torres.”

He pointed out that extending the Spaniard’s contract puts them into an unbeatable position to continue reaping success in the innovative motorcycling World Championship, endorsed by the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme.

About Casadei’s arrival, Pons emphasized that it is very important, since he is a young, fast rider who is already among the best in the category and is sure that he will bring them many joys.

“With both of them, we have a very competitive sporting project to continue being the referents of MotoE and I would like to thank our sponsors for their support, since thanks to them it is possible. Together we will enjoy a good year,” concluded Pons.

There are still changes in competitions awaiting their new season. A few days ago, it was the Formula E organizers who announced a change for the format and calendar, and now it is Moto E, which will lose exclusivity of their main supplier of electric motorcycles.

Italian manufacturer Energica will withdraw from the category after the 2022 season. The brand has accompanied the MotoE FIM Enel since it debuted in 2019. After four seasons, the contract will come to an end. Each campaign, 18 riders compete with the Ego Corsa, featuring a battery capacity of 20 kWh, power of up to 120 kW and a speed of 270 km / h.

Looking for New Challenges

About the reasons for the withdrawal, Livia Cevolini, CEO of Energica Motor Company commented that “being pioneers of electric mobility on two wheels, we have opened the way to a whole new layer of sustainable and exciting motorcycle racing and, as we have always done, now our goal is to test ourselves with new challenges”.

She thanked Dorna Sports, promoter of MotoE, for the great opportunity to showcase their technology. “We are looking forward to complete our journey together in style,” noted.

For his part, Nicolas Goubert, CEO of the FIM Enel MotoE World Cup praised the partnership over the first three seasons and said they “put on an incredible show.”

“From the beginning, Energica has brought expertise to the track in a way that couldn’t be more satisfying: perhaps even more impressive than the performance on the track, was the reliability of the bike, as none of the 18 riders encountered mechanical failure during the races we enjoyed over the three seasons,” he underlined.

In 2017, Energica was selected as the sole supplier and generated controversy early on when all 18 bikes burned out during pre-season testing in the spring of 2019, but the cause was not a failure of the vehicles or their batteries, but one of the charging stations.

On the sportive side, the 2021 campaign was one of the most exciting in MotoE’s short life, with Spain’s Jordi Torres retaining his title in a controversial finish where he defeated Switzerland’s Dominique Aegerter.

From 2019, the MotoGP World Championship was updated by the addition of an electric category to the calendar with the FIM Enel MotoE. While the third season of the competition concluded a few weeks ago with Spaniard Jordi Torres being crowned for second year in a row, regulatory changes have just been adopted for the 2022 campaign.

The Series high command, headed by Carmelo Ezpeleta, representative of Dorna Sports, and Paul Duparc, member of the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme, approved a new qualifying format.

Until now, MotoE riders had to compete on an E-Pole, a very different round from other motorsport events, where each pilot was entitled to a single lap to establish the time that would define his place on the starting grid.

What are the changes?

In order to establish a new qualifying system, the category will adopt a rhythm quite similar to Moto3, Moto2 and MotoGP. The riders will take part in two free practice sessions on Friday.

The ten slowest riders at the end of the second session will be included into the first Q1 qualifying session on Saturday. They will be able to ride for 10 minutes with no lap limit. Then, the best two will move on to the next round. During the 10-minute break, they will be able to recharge their motorcycle at a pitlane and benefit from an extra rear tire.

The second qualifying session Q2 will be contested like the first one, with the same time margin and no lap limit featuring the top eight riders from free practice and the top two from Q1. The Q2 results will give the starting order for the two races of the weekend; one on Saturday and one on Sunday.

The MotoE High Commission made these adjustments with the objective of simplifying the understanding of the discipline and, above all, to offer a more equal round of competition for all riders.

With the 2021 MotoE World Cup season already completed, the electric motorcycle series announced a contract extension with their main sponsor, Enel X. The renewal agreement until 2024 consolidates a partnership that started with the category’s debut, which the company has been naming since 2019.

Enel Group’s Global Business Line, will continue to be the official smart charging partner of the competition, which it provided with smart and customized electric bike charging solutions. The agreement has an extension option until 2025-2026. In addition, the company will be MotoGP’s sustainable energy partner.

The information was confirmed by Dorna Sports, where Francesco Venturini, CEO of Enel X declared to be very happy to continue contributing their technology to MotoE. “This is a further step that underlines how important it is for Enel X to continue developing innovative technologies for eMotorsports.”

“The challenge is to combine the adrenaline of the track with the concept of sustainability behind the event, and since the beginning of the collaboration with MotoE, we understood that the championship represents the perfect environment where to implement cutting-edge charging solutions to be brought into everyday mobility, concretely contributing to the transport electrification”, added Venturini.

Meanwhile, Marc Saurina, Global Business Partnerships Director at Dorna Sports highlighted that since MotoE started in 2019, they have achieved a strong, competitive, exciting and important series that is true to their values, making a perfect match with Dorna’s ESG strategy.”

The Enel Infrastructure

At all Cup races, Enel X provided JuiceRoll Race Edition, the new charging network designed and developed specifically for MotoE, that was deployed from the debut on May 2, 2021 at Jerez de la Frontera, Spain.

The JuiceRoll Race Edition is an innovative charger with internal storage and two interconnected units. A semi-mobile unit (SMU) and a mobile unit (MU), which can charge an electric motorcycle in about 40 minutes.

The SMU supplies energy to recharge vehicles with the support of a solar panel system, working directly in the ePaddock area.

The MU, on the other hand, makes it possible to supply the motorcycles at the pit lane and at the starting grid. Specifically, the MU offers a final charge of seven minutes on the starting grid, giving more distance capacity than in previous seasons.

During the ePaddock charging session, JuiceRoll Race Edition can supply up to 1 MW spread over 20 chargers, requiring only 100 kW of solar panels and the grid under normal operating conditions, thanks to the integrated storage unit.
