During the debut season, Extreme E organizers have had to overcome all kinds of obstacles to bring their exciting races to destinations hit by climate change.

It already happened with the event planned to be held in South America, postponed, and now the fifth and final day is a real question mark for Alejandro Agag, founder of the tournament, and company.

“There are several options, what happens again is the red list of the COVID, we are looking at it. We have Egypt, Greece, and Morocco. We are going to see which one we can do. This month I will be traveling to see if we can define the last race,” stated Agag to the press in Madrid.

In love with Greenland

At the end of the last joust in the Arctic, the Spaniard was pleasantly impressed with the experience and does not hesitate to confirm that place for the 2022 Extreme E season.

“I think Greenland is positioned as the symbol of the competition now. This race became a classic. It’s like our Monaco if we were Formula 1,” he said.

He added that what he experienced in that competition really symbolizes what is happening on the planet with the melting of the poles, climate change. “We went there to draw attention to what is happening and to take that message as far as possible,” said Agag.

Thinking about Season 2

Despite the headache of pulling off the first season, Agag is already cooking up the second edition of Extreme E. He said he intends to keep the five-race calendar until 2022, with three days and two new events to showcase climate change in other landscapes. He also confirmed that there is a good chance that Saudi Arabia will once again open the series, albeit in a different location than the Diriyah desert.

He noted that the calendar is set to be announced soon, and hinted that Brazil will feature in the planning for next year, following the unfortunate suspension for the inaugural campaign.

Regarding teams, Agag also confirmed that he has been in talks with four or five different manufacturers who have expressed interest in the category. Again, nothing is confirmed, but the current belief among organizers is the way the tournament ends this year will be the tipping point for interested teams.

“Racing on an area that was once a glacier before it suffered under the climate crisis is very special”, said Extreme E CEO and Founder Alejandro Agag, on the layout of the circuit for this weekend’s Arctic X Prix in Greenland.

The businessman and zero emissions motorsports promoter stated that the track “is unlike anything the world of motorsports has ever seen”, as it is the first time a category competes at the mentioned location. At the same time, he also added that this will raise spectators’ awareness about the damage being caused to the planet.

Glaciar Rusell

The Circuit

At least 6.68 kilometers long, the track will border the Russell Glacier on the outskirts of Kangerlussuaq. Large boulders and glacial sediments are an integral part of an adventure that will also include sand dunes.

Uphills and downhills will have to be faced by the 18 riders who will participate in the race. It all starts on a plain at 123 meters above sea level leading to sand dunes. Then, a small lake of glacial water will come next.

Given that this last place is located on a high area, it is expected speeds perhaps never seen before on previous X Prix and, of course, the stage will be served to test the ability of the Odyssey 21 to cope with low temperatures: 9 degrees to be exact.

The Arctic X Prix will take place on August 28th and 29th, with a new competition formula.

The race will be broadcasted to many countries in America, Europe, Asia and Africa. You can see the complete list by clicking HERE.

The Extreme E excitement grows increasingly as the 2021 season progresses. This time, Greenland will host the next X Prix on August 28-29. The event, however, will feature a series of new innovations implemented to experiment new ways to increase competitiveness.

The Artic X Prix will be held in Kangerlussuaq and will witness new updates to its sporting format, including a points split awarded after intermediate qualifying sessions; modified route to semi-finals; opportunity to advance to the finals of all races; and a five-car finale competition.

On August 28, Saturday, two qualifying sessions will be held, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, where each team will complete two laps of the course and 9 points will be distributed to the best time, 8 to the runner-up and so on. These points will be pooled together to provide the intermediate ranking that was previously recorded in time, as was the case in Saudi Arabia and Senegal.

This new update will promote a more competitive environment where smaller teams will have the opportunity to start ahead if they perform well, and will have a second chance in case of poor timing or disqualification.

New Format, New Thrills in Extreme E

Now the teams finishing first, fifth and sixth will advance to Semifinal 1, while second, third and fourth will progress to Semifinal 2, with seventh, eighth and ninth going into the Crazy Race.

The two top finishers from Semi-Final 1 and 2, along with the Crazy Race winner, will battle on Sunday, August 29th, in the final 5-team race, with points being distributed as follows: 25 points for first, 19 for the second place, 18 to third, 15 to fourth and 12 to fifth. The team finishing in the second third position of Semifinal 1 will receive 10 points, the third in Semifinal 2 will receive 8 points, leaving 6 points for the Crazy Race winner and 4 points for the second.

It is worth noting that new points system to define the starting grid will not affect the overall Championship leaderboard, so the scoring process in the race will be distributed as follows: 12 points to the winner, 11 to the runner-up, 10 to the third and so on until reaching the ninth place, with 4 units.

“As a series, we are always ready to evolve in order to create the best overall result, and we believe these format changes will offer more competition and even more exciting races for our global fan base,” said Alejandro Agag, Extreme E founder and CEO.
