Jake Dennis‘ two seasons in Formula E have not been entirely successful, but he has managed to win races and finish within the top 10 drivers in the category, which has earned him a vote of confidence from the Andretti team.

According to Motorsport portal, the British driver will receive a new opportunity and renewed his contract with the team to remain in the Gen3 era, where they will use technology supplied by Porsche.

The racer finished campaign 8 in sixth position with 126 accumulated points, while Andretti, the same place his team occupied in the constructors’ table.

A Step Towards Winning

The team is convinced that the permanence of Dennis is a key move to achieve its objectives. In that sense, Team Principal, Michael Andretti, expressed his satisfaction for being able to retain the driver.

“Keeping Jake as part of the Avalanche Andretti FE is a great step for our success as a team heading into season nine. Jake has been a successful driver and a great leader over the past two years with us, and we expect this to continue into season nine and beyond,” the boss said.

He stressed that this move represents a continuation of what the team is building with the firm goal of becoming one of the great contenders to succeed in Formula E.

Motivation for the New Phase

After learning of the pact, Dennis said he was highly motivated for the Gen3 era of the electric single-seater series, especially with the significant engineering input they will have with Porsche.

“I am very motivated for next year and I am confident that with the dedication, teamwork and investment I have seen over the last two years at Avalanche Andretti FE, we will be able to fight for wins and titles in the future,” Dennis added.

“I started my career in Formula E with Andretti and I am excited to be able to continue working with the team that has continued to support my career in this category,” he concluded.

Following Dennis’ renewal, Andretti is expected to announce in the coming days the driver who will join him for “season nine”, information that so far has been kept completely confidential.

After only his second season in Formula E, Jake Dennis has had the luxury of triumphing in several E-Prix, something that drivers with a longer track record in the electric single-seater series have not done.

In the first race of the double-header held in London, the Avalanche Andretti representative climbed to the top of the podium on a track criticized by several racers, but which for him means victory.

“I love the track, but I like it because I win here. The indoor section is very good, that creates the pre-grid ceremony that you don’t get anywhere else,” Dennis told British media outlet Mirror. However, he is no stranger to suggestions from several of his colleagues, noting that it would be ideal to have a few more overtaking opportunities.

For other drivers, the English capital’s street circuit does not offer enough overtaking opportunities, resulting in some ambitious moves and, as a result, several collisions.

“The faster the circuit, the better. This track is quite fun, but only because I’m fast here. If I were slow, I would say ‘it’s too slow, too tight, no overtaking.’ But when you win here twice, you’re always going to say ‘this is great,'” Dennis added.

With Title Chances?

With Stofel Vandoorne pretty solid and almost 100 points behind, Dennis’ aspirations for the Formula E scepter look slim. In addition to winning on Saturday, the Andretti ace came very close to the double, but was defeated at the last minute by the historic Lucas di Grassi.

Dennis scored 51 points over the weekend, more than anyone else on the grid. Before London, his best result was a third place in the first round of the season, figures that have not been enough to keep him with a clear chance of a title.

He assured that despite being far down the table he feels no frustration with his performance this year. “There hasn’t been any mistakes, we just haven’t been fast enough in certain situations. I think where I am in the championship is where I deserve to be.”

Dennis believes they have performed strongly on the slower speed circuits, while on the fast tracks they have clearly been outclassed.

“I think if you’re going to get back to your form, you want to do it at the end of the year because then everyone will remember how you finished, they can take it into the winter, you’re full of energy and positive vibes,” he concluded.

Formula E will reach its denouement in Seoul, South Korea, in the double-header on August 13-14 to decide the champion.

FIA Formula E season 7 is history. Now, the focus has been set on season 8 with several drivers promising to put on a real show when they get their hands behind the wheel. Lucas di Grassi has most of the spotlight, but there are other drivers to consider.

Precisely, a couple of “not so new rookies” tried (and are trying) to consolidate their name in order to be respected towards the future of the 100 electric single-seater category. They are Jake Dennis and Nick Cassidy, who will have another golden opportunity to consolidate all the knowledge acquired during their debut campaign.

Nick Cassidy

Envision Racing bet on Nick Cassidy for his arrival to the ABB FIA Formula E, and they were not wrong. The driver came to the category with several records (he won the Super GT, Formula 3 and Super Formula in Japan) under his belt that drew the attention, which is why he enjoys a place in the starting lineup.

Landing at Envision brought pressure, as he had to become Sam Bird’s replacement and live with it at every E-Prix of season 7. At the beginning, this certainly affected the New Zealander at the early rounds of the campaign, being overshadowed by his teammate Robin Frijns, but from the fourth stage onwards he made the necessary adjustments to beat his teammate by more than five seconds.

After that performance, he had flashes, highs and lows, but the truth is that for the future there is much more to see from Nick Cassidy, and surely his name will sound louder on the press when the green flag is lowered next season.

Jake Dennis

He came to the FIA Formula E under the command of the BMW i Andretti team, (now Avalanche Andretti) although this was unexpected. However, he managed to turn the spotlight on him on more than one occasion by claiming a pole position and a victory, something that many drivers throughout the category have not been able to achieve during their first season.

Of course, things had their good and bad moments, but the Englishman’s willingness to do things right earned him a deserved place as one of the team’s starting drivers with plenty to give at ABB FIA Formula E season 8. Both drivers will be a threat to the rest of the sustainable grid.

The 8th season of Formula E is just around the corner and, as it happened in 2021, Green Racing News will bring you all the details of the exciting and technological electric single-seater series.

On this issue, we will be reviewing the favorite drivers for the upcoming season, which will come with a new format and new venues to expand the tournament to all corners of the world.

Nick de Vries

After flirting strongly with Formula 1, the Dutch driver finally stayed with Mercedes, the team with which he will seek to revalidate his title. With 99 units, de Vries won one of the most disputed titles in the history of the category, where there were up to seven different winners. It should be noted that this will be the last season of the team in the championship, so the performance of the driver will be crucial to define his future.

Lucas Di Grassi

Despite not having finished on the podium during Season Seven, the Brazilian is a historic driver who, in addition to winning the title in 2016-2017, has 12 victories and 35 podiums among his 84 participations in the category. With this parchment and all his experience, Di Grassi is expected to be fighting at the top of the standings.

Antonio Felix da Costa

After overcoming the financial uncertainty surrounding DS Techeetah, the Portuguese driver, who already knows what it’s like to taste the sweetness of winning the series, is ready to return to the top.

At the end of the pre-season, da Costa declared that the team is facing 2022 with great ambition and, although he admits that it will be complicated due to the quality of drivers and teams that exist, they will work hard to win.

Edoardo Mortara

The Swiss driver was only seven points behind the leader, Nick de Vries, and took the runner-up position in season 7. The ROKIT Venturi representative already knows what it is like to face tough challenges after returning from a terrible accident in Berlin and fighting for the trophy. Mortara already showed in the preseason in Valencia that his podium finish in the previous season was no fluke.

Jake Dennis

The Briton has earned his place among the favorites. Andretti trusted in his abilities thanks to an impressive performance in the brand’s driver selection evaluation, and in his rookie year he paid off for the institution by finishing third overall.

Despite this ranking, nothing is set in stone. In fact, in the last campaign there were no lights until the last date, so all the drivers present on the grid not only arrive with options to win, but also with the motivation and tireless work of each of their teams.

He came with a bang to the ABB FIA Formula E and despite his rookie tag, he swept the tracks of the category. Jake Dennis was not the typical ‘inexperienced’ driver facing a transitional stage in such a big division; on the contrary, he was responsible for making his name heard ahead of season 8.

The term ‘rookie’ for Dennis will be left behind, because now he will have a great opportunity aboard the Avalanche Andretti single-seater, and a whole campaign to reaffirm his status as a driver to be reckoned with. Two wins and a pole position spoke for themselves during Season 7.

Dennis not only starred good races on his Formula E debut, but he was very close to take the Championship and definitively make history. Therefore, the experience gained on the circuits of the electrified single-seater division is sure to play a key role when he starts his second campaign with the category.

Jake Dennis (Photo: Avalanche Andretti)

“I can’t say I had so much confidence in myself to think I could come in and almost win the championship on my first year. However, I definitely arrived with an attitude that I could perform well on single-seaters,” Dennis said.

Despite finishing third overall last season, those who followed the race closely know of how close he was to tasting the joys of victory until a broken inverter ended his hopes, forcing the Briton to star on a long and devastating walk to pit lane.

“Now that I’m not a ‘rookie’, I’m coming into this campaign ready to try and win. I knew it was awesome, but at the end of the year, the rookie thing got pretty exhausting. So now I am looking forward to not being one anymore. I checked that box and got Rookie of the Year, but now someone else can have that honor,” the driver commented with a chuckle.

Avalanche Andretti (Photo: Avalanche Andretti)

Now with BMW’s departure and a new image for the Andretti team, Jake Dennis is ready to continue writing another page in the history books of Formula E, although the battle will not be easy, as ROKiT Venturi Racing looks very strong with a fearsome line-up of Lucas di Grassi and Edoardo Mortara.

A few days after the end of the Formula E Season Seven, BMW and Andretti are still regretting how close they were to winning the drivers’ title with rookie Jake Dennis.

In one of the closest qualifying rounds in electric racing history, the Briton arrived to the final race in Berlin just four points behind the eventual winner, Nick de Vries.

Everything appeared to be in place for Dennis to fight side by side with de Vries for first place, especially after the other contenders, Edoardo Mortara and Mitch Evans were disqualified due to an accident on the first lap. An electrical fault, however, nipped the BMW racer’s dream in the bud.

Specifically, the rear axle of Dennis’ car locked up and caused him to crash into the wall. Despite his desperation to get in, it was too late and he left everything on a silver platter for the Mercedes champion.

Dismayed Team

BMW i Andretti director Roger Griffiths described the final result in the German capital as “disappointing”, following the breakdown Dennis suffered. “We went into this last race with a very good chance of winning the World Championship with Jake. He was in a good position with most of his title challengers behind him. On the restart after the unfortunate collision between Mitch Evans and Edoardo Mortara, we suspect there was a technical problem with the car that we have yet to analyze,” he said.

“The rear axle locked and Jake was just a passenger. At that point, his championship hopes were over, but I told him that his season was pretty good because he finished in third place,” Griffiths explained.

He admitted that if someone had offered them a third-place finish after the first two rounds, “we would have bitten his hand off. Jake did an incredible job on his rookie season with his two wins.”

The leader emphasizes that they leave with a bittersweet feeling, but the balance is positive. “We’re disappointed today, but once everything has settled down, I think we can be very proud of what we’ve achieved together as BMW and Andretti in Formula E, and the hard work that everyone put in to get us to this point,” he maintained.

“We are excited about what season 8 will bring for us. I thank everyone, not just the frontline team, but also everyone in the background who helped make this project a success,” Griffiths concluded.

Despite the shake-up generated by BMW’s announcement to leave Formula E, its ally Andretti Autosport, is already assembling its roster for season eight.

Jake Dennis will return to compete with the team for the 2022 season. After making his debut with the structure through his link with BMW, the British driver will have the opportunity to continue his career with the electric series.

Although Andretti will use the BMW powertrain on its single-seater, Dennis’ permanence is based on the contract he has with the manufacturer. During his first season in the series, he scored two victories in Valencia and London to finish third overall.

They Will Continue to Rely on Formula E

Michael Andretti, Andretti’s Formula E Project Director, said, “As one of the founding teams of Formula E we are more committed than ever to the series and what it stands for.”

“Our involvement will be different for ‘Season Eight’ as we compete as an independent team, but announcing Jake Dennis’ continuity allows us to have a solid foundation to build on for this new phase. We are delighted to welcome Jake to the team and much of the staff we have had until now. We hope to be part of many more seasons of the category and the future of electric mobility”.

Roger Griffiths, Chief Operating Officer, added: “Jake Dennis has shown during his rookie season that he has what it takes to win in Formula E. He has done so in two ePrix races

“His knowledge of both the BMW powertrain and the systems associated with it are very important assets to the Andretti project and operations. Jake’s continuity should bode well for success next season. Two wins in his first season is really impressive by the standards of any driver competing on Formula E,” he added.

Since Formula E’s inaugural campaign, Andretti-led teams have secured seven poles, 15 podiums and seven wins. The brand has introduced a variety of talented drivers, including Scott Speed, Marco Andretti, Simona de Silvestro, Antonio Felix da Costa, Maximillian Guenther, Robin Frijns and Jean-Eric Vergne.

Andretti and BMW will continue to work together in Season 8 using the BMW powertrain, as they move toward their long-term manufacturing infrastructure and partnership in preparation for the Gen3 era of Formula E.

Formula E will have a photo finish after Jake Dennis took victory in Saturday’s first race of the weekend in London.

Mahindra Racing’s Alex Lynn won pole position and seemed to have the numbers to win the race. However, Dennis made a great recovery at the Attack Mode zone and snatched first place from his countryman, who finished third.

After the great overtaking, the rookie knew how to control the race timing to win his season’s second E-Prix, sealing a great start on his journey through the electric category and ranking second in the standings. It was also the second win for both BMW and Andretti in the past three races, after Maximilian Gunther’s success in New York.

Nick De Vries, Mercedes driver, reached the podium by escorting Dennis. It is a good result, considering the adverse streak over the last few races for the German manufacturer.

Sébastien Buemi took fourth place, his best result with Nissan e.dams. André Lotterer and Rene Rast followed the Swiss on the final grid.

The championship leader, Sam Bird, had to retire on the first lap due to an incident damaging his Jaguar’s suspension.

Despite his retirement, the Briton remains at the top of the World Championship with 81 points, followed by Dennis, who was fifteenth before the race, placing second with 79 points, one ahead of Da Costa and two over De Vries.

Antonio Felix da Costa, one of the drivers with a good chance of winning the championship, took advantage of Fan Boost and was able to move up one position to finish ninth. The Portuguese driver scored two points, although it does not give him the championship lead, but moves him closer to Sam Bird, and just one point behind Dennis.

Unpredictable, without a clear favorite. This has been the season number seven of Formula E that after Round 6 of the Valencia E-Prix in which the British Jake Dennis took his first victory of the series.

The podium was completed by André Lotterer (Tag Heuer Porsche) and Alex Lynn (from Mahindra Racing), the latter taking an extra point for having completed the fastest lap touring the Ricardo Torme Circuit in 1: 30.26.

On the side of the winning driver, the BMW i Andretti Motorsport driver took the pole position and started with possibilities, dominating the race from start to finish.

The race was carried out with some tranquility taking into account what happened on Saturday, and that is because special attention was paid to saving electrical energy that the drivers were going to deploy on the circuit after “Round 5” in which half of the grid drivers ran out of battery.

For that reason DS Techeetah driver Jean-Eric Vergne starred in two of the few overtakings in the E-Prix, one made against Tom Bloqmvist and the other when André Lotterer overtook the Frenchman for fourth place.

The German was quite aggressive and it is that with the passage of the race, he continued to overtake drivers until he finished in second place, beating René Rast and Norman Nato who would finish fifth for a touch to Alex Lynn that would earn him a 5-second penalty.

It should be noted that Oliver Turvey got an eighth place that is worth him to get four more points but with little flavor since the Briton started on the grid in fourth position.

It may also interest you: Total madness! Nyck De Vries wins a Valencia E-Prix to remember

On his side, the second in the drivers table, Stoffel Vandoorne failed to score points in the second Valencia race due to his touch with the Swiss driver Buemi. Championship leader Nyck de Vries finished in 17th position.

In the drivers’ championship table it will continue to be led by Dutchman Nyck de Vries with teammate Stoffel Vandoorne just 9 points behind him and Sam Bird in third place.

For that reason the positions are even more equal due to the fact that none of the first 5 drivers of the championship managed to score in the second E-Prix of Spain. The next round will take place with the Monaco E-Prix on May 8.

The preseason of Formula E, the new world championship designated by the International Automobile Federation (Federation Internationale de l’Automobile, FIA) left good feelings among the novice drivers who will compete in the series. In Green Racing News we present you those who will debut this season.

Jake Dennis

He will be Maximilian Günther’s teammate on the BMW Andretti team in the 2020-21 Formula E season, he came to the German team to replace Alexander Sims, who was signed by the Mahindra team in September.

Dennis will be a debutant in the category in 2021, he has tested with the team in the past and has pleasantly impressed the entire team. He raced in the DTM during 2019 under the Aston Martin brand, but upon the announcement of his retirement from the German touring car championship, Jake was left without a seat.

Later he participated in the 12 hours of Bathurst and in the European Le Mans Series in the JOTA team with Anthony Davidson and the Mexican pilot Roberto González.

“I’m really looking forward to the new challenge that awaits me in Formula E, and would like to thank all those in charge at BMW i Andretti Motorsport for their trust,” said Dennis.

Jake Dennis

“I’m aware that I will be confronted with unique requirements in Formula E, which I will need to get used to first, but versatility has always been one of my strengths, and I am confident that, with the help of the team and my fellow driver Maximilian Günther, I will quickly get my bearings”

Nick Cassidy

Cassidy is another rookie in ABB FIA Formula E seventh season after being chosen by Envision Virgin Racing as the replacement for Sam Bird.

From the very birth of Formula E, Bird has been alongside Virgin Racing, but the partnership came to an end at the conclusion of the 2019-20 season, as the Briton now moved to Panasonic Jaguar Racing.

When looking for a replacement for one of the most winning drivers in the history of the series, Virgin settled on Cassidy, a rookie who has already shown his potential in March this year in the tests for rookies in Marrakech, where it was dispatched with the best time and with a good performance in the Valencia preseason.

Born in Auckland, New Zealand, 26 years ago, Cassidy competed in karting in his country before reaching cars in 2008 competing in different categories as he won the Toyota Racing Series of New Zealand in 2012 and 2013 taking the place of his compatriot Mitch Evans, Jaguar driver in Formula E, who was also a two-time champion of the category in the years before Cassidy.

After some inconsistent appearances in Formula Renault and Formula 3 in Europe, Cassidy settled in Japan and in 2015 was Japanese Formula 3 champion with seven victories, seven pole positions and 13 podiums in 17 races run.

Two years later, the New Zealander returned to dominate the tracks in Japan, this time in vehicles with a roof in the SUPER GT and in 2019 he established himself in the Super Formula of the Asian country.

With the announcement of his arrival at Envision Virgin Racing, Cassidy will not only venture into a new series for him, but will also have to leave Japan and move to Europe to be close to the team’s base.

“Racing in Japan has been an amazing experience and I’m fortunate that I’ve been able to achieve so much in a short space of time, but I feel it’s now time for the next challenge in my career and I’m very much looking forward to doing that with Envision Virgin Racing and Formula E,” said Cassidy.

He will be one of the riders to see in season seven, not just because of what he has already shown, but because he joins a team that has always been the protagonist and aspires to win in each E-Prix.

Norman Nato

Norman Nato will be one of the new names to join ABB FIA Formula E next season as a driver for ROKiT Venturi Racing, although he comes with an extensive career in motorsport.

The departure of Felipe Massa from the team led by Susie Wolff just after the 2019-20 season opened a place in a seat that was not expected to be free. And this time, instead of going in search of a high-profile rider like the Brazilian, Venturi looked inside and Norman Nato appeared.

The French driver has been involved with the team since 2018 as a reserve driver, with two Formula E rookie test appearances in Marrakech, and has spent hours carrying out development work on the Venturi simulator for the past two years.

He began his international career in European Formula Renault 2.0 in 2011, where he was fourth in his second season with a victory at Spa-Francorchamps and three other podiums.

From there Cannes-born Nato rose to the World Series Formula V8 3.5 and after an unsuccessful first year with the DAMS team, he continued into 2014 to claim two victories, one of them in Monaco.

The 2015 was a year of growth for the Frenchman in training series when he reached GP2, where after a difficult campaign with Arden he switched to Racing Engineering to live a year as the main man: two victories (Catalunya and Monza), one pole and a total of five podiums to be fifth in a championship where three of the four drivers who passed it are or have been in Formula 1: Pierre Gasly, Antonio Giovinazzi and Sergey Sirotkin.

In 2017 Nato returned to the ranks of Arden in what is now called Formula 2 but consistency was not on his side and, despite obtaining a victory in the challenging street race in Baku and two other podiums, the Frenchman finished ninth in the table.

From there Nato left formula cars and moved on to endurance racing, finishing third in the European Le Mans Series championship in 2018 before reaching the World Endurance Championship in 2019 with the Rebelion team. In that event he was also third along with Bruno Senna and Gustavo Menezes behind the dominant Toyota.

His confirmation as a starting driver at ROKiT Venturi Racing will undoubtedly mark a new great challenge for Nato, but his experience of almost a decade in some of the most important series in the world suggests that the 28-year-old Frenchman can take on a leading role.
