Formula 1 (F1) plans to reduce its environmental impact through biofuels. The organization is studying and working on this solution for the future. However, for the former champion of the category, Nico Rosberg, the option should be electrification, following the steps of the FIA Formula E (FE).

Through an event held by Julius Bär, one of the sponsors of the FE, the German talked about what Formula 1 plans to do. “I see that F1 will bet on synthetic fuels, which for mobility is not going to be the best solution,” Rosberg sentenced adding that they can be relevant for other sectors such as cargo ships, trucks or airplanes.

“Will it be relevant enough for Formula 1 to use biofuels? Maybe, as Alejandro Agag said, they will have to electrify,” he emphasized. For Rosberg, both categories can help each other without detracting from the other, asserting that over time. “There will be a natural coexistence.”

On the other hand, Alejandro Agag was also present at the Julius Bär event backing up Rosberg’s assertions, and while he did not state that Formula E and Formula 1 would work together, he left the door open to such a possibility. “It could happen, but I don’t know. I am working to fulfill one of my main objectives: to find a way that Formula 1 and Formula E can exist in parallel.”

Alejandro Agag (Photo: @alejandroextremee)

Agag stressed the fact that if Formula E sets out to be faster than Formula 1, it will be, they would just run out of energy very quickly, but in terms of power and potential, the Gen3 vehicles have enough endorsement to outperform the single-seaters in the Grand Circus. “Someday we’ll be faster, we could be faster already, put four engines, one in each wheel, and go faster than F1 for 10 minutes.”

The German won the title in the top category of world motorsport in 2016 after an intense battle against his teammate, Lewis Hamilton. After that he decided to retire and now serves as one of sustainability pioneers, both inside and outside motorsports. He is currently the CEO of Rosberg X Racing, champion team of the first Extreme E season.

A few weeks before the last day of the Extreme E season, teams are already starting to think beyond in order to strengthen their templates and technical system. One such case is Nico Rosberg who, after a dominant debut, is already making calculations of what is to come in 2022.

During an interview for the e-Formel portal, the former Formula 1 World Champion revealed that he is in negotiations for his payroll, the JBXE Racing has a manufacturer behind for the second campaign of the electric off-road series.

“I would like to have a partner for next season. We are currently in very good talks. A German manufacturer, of course, would be ideal, but it can also be very interesting on an international level,” he said.

Despite the possible inclusions Rosberg may bring, he noted that automakers need approval for Extreme E’s development, with the goal of achieving technical added value. He assured that constructors’ inclusions must be done gradually, since not all teams have the capacity to have a partner to back them up and the championship cannot lose its balance.

Strength in the Series

Rosberg also took advantage of the conversation with e-Formel to review aspects to be improved for the second season, so Extreme E can establish itself as a sport. Specifically, he referred to the cars which have suffered some inconveniences at different races of the current course.

“It shouldn’t be that so many cars breakdown.” “Sure, if it makes mistakes, you should lose time, but not that they break down. Extreme E still has to work on stability. Races automatically become more exciting when more cars can be directly fighting. That’s one of the problems that needs to be solved right now,” he said.

Challenging Terrain

Although Rosberg X Racing was once again on top of the Island X Prix and celebrated most wins this season, things did not go smoothly for the German team in Italy due to the difficult terrain. On Saturday particularly, they ran into trouble after a rollover for Molly Taylor and a flat tire for Johan Kristoffersson.

“It’s a big challenge to read the area so well to pick the right tracks,” Rosberg said. “We didn’t have a good start in Italy, and that’s an area where I’ll be behind again in the final because we can do better.”

He noted that both Formula 1 and Extreme E are not just about speed, but about intelligence. “You have to make the right decisions. Before the races we spend hours together on the computer in meetings. We try to discuss all kinds of problems and how we can avoid them,” he revealed.

Finally, the world motorsport star expressed his satisfaction at being able to contribute his experience to the team’s drivers not only as a racer, but also in his role as head of the entire squad.

If anything has been clear at the Extreme E season kickoff, it’s the dominance that Rosberg X Racing has shown at the Saudi Arabian and Senegalese X Prix. So, to know if they can continue to be at the top is a question that the fans are wondering ahead of the Artic X Prix, the third event of the calendar, considering the high level of the X44 Team, the main rival.

Two consecutive victories by Nico Rosberg’s team extended their lead in the overall standings, with 71 points. Nevertheless, Lewis Hamilton’s team (X44) topped the qualifying times, showing the battle between the two teams will be full of action and adrenaline.

Greenland will serve as the battleground when the ODYSSEY 21 off-roaders ride across what was once the mighty Russell Glacier, now just a salt rock. There, what was once a war between Rosberg and Hamilton will be transferred to the electric rally category by their drivers.

Rosberg X Racing’s Outlook

All this has prompted Nico Rosberg to express about the team’s chance for a third win in a row. “We couldn’t have asked for a better start to the series with two wins in the first two races, to our credit. But it would be foolish to go into this round predicting the same result for the team. We are working very hard to achieve another solid result in Greenland and I can’t wait to see how it plays out over the weekend.”

Molly Taylor and Johan Kristoffersson will start at the Artic X Prix as cautiously as possible, given that Sébastien Loeb and Gutiérrez have shown great competitive pace that may ultimately turn into a win as the category develops in Greenland to narrow the X44 Team and Rosberg X Racing gap of just 14 points.

“I was really proud of our performances in Senegal and Saudi Arabia, but we had some bad luck in the finale. I’m sure this time we can learn from what happened and ensure we get another podium,” asserted Loeb.

An ordinary kid like any other, Nico Rosberg decided he wanted to emulate his father Keke Rosberg’s footsteps in becoming a world champion in Formula 1, and he didn’t stop until he did.

German, tough and talented. Rosberg’s path in the Grand Circus was built with effort and dedication until he arrived at Mercedes, and hand in hand with Michael Schumacher to help developing the concept of the car that dominated the category in 2014. In the 2014 and 2015 seasons he watched in the shadows how his teammate Lewis Hamilton enjoyed the champagne as a true world champion.

For sure Rosberg said “enough is enough”. In 2016 he took out his claws, was more aggressive than usual and set out to fight for the championship against the Briton. In the first four races he crushed him, then Hamilton recovered and the rest of the season turned into a give-and-take until the end in Abu Dhabi.

After that he decided to take a break from Formula 1 actively, as he left the category at the top, finding a new passion in the world of sustainability through Extreme E as owner and team boss.

Rosberg’s top 5

Having been a Formula 1 driver and now team boss, Nico Rosberg has a broad criterion when it comes to choosing any driver, that is why he dared to reveal his top 5 drivers who have passed through F1, choosing Michael Schumacher, Juan Manuel Fangio, Ayrton Senna, Lewis Hamilton and Alain Prost.

Finally, Rosberg analyzes with a critical eye the progress of Rosberg X Racing in Extreme E, providing all his knowledge in the category of electric rallies, while contributing in sustainability issues for the preservation of the planet, sticking to the main plan of this competition.

Nico Rosberg took a drastic turn in his life after competing for several years in Formula 1, the category of motorsport where little ones dream of racing. However, his illusion went further and after an intense fight against his Mercedes teammate, Lewis Hamilton, he managed to establish himself as a new champion in the 2016 season.

After having obtained everything in the Great Circus, the German decided to retire in style, surprising more than one by the decision, especially being champion and being at a great level, but the human and family version of Rosberg stood before the category and took the step to the next level, retired and now lives his life more calmly.

“I fulfilled my career the way I wanted, with the world title, and I am happy with my new life.”

Nico Rosberg

Or at least that reflects in his day-to-day life. Although, a born pilot like Rosberg cannot completely detach himself from the sports and racing world. He is currently analyzing Grand Prix in Formula 1 while having his own team of his in Extreme E, Rosberg X Racing, where championship leaders march in their debut season.

Nico Rosberg, from driver to crew chief

There, the German serves as team leader in the 100% electric and sustainable Dakar that steals the reflectors of the competition SUVs, where he perfectly understands the role and stress that Toto Wolff played and suffered when he was in his stage with the Silver Arrows in Formula 1, sometimes criticizing the team leader for the decisions he made, but today with this new experience, the picture changed for the German.

“Now I look back and when I used to criticize Toto, now I think: ‘Ok, maybe I shouldn’t have criticized him.’ It’s actually quite difficult to be in that role,” said Rosberg, who is in a new role and totally different from the one that he was used to but that he enjoys a lot, and much more knowing that they are the leaders of the championship.

On the other hand, Nico Rosberg discovers in each race how to talk to his pilots to express ideas or even reprimand, always following the fine line of respect in order to be subtle, without falling into conflict and much less offending a colleague who is giving everything for the whole for the good of the team at Extreme E.

Finally, the questions about whether he will return to Formula 1 always haunt his portfolio, because after winning the category and being the only one capable of defeating Lewis Hamilton, people want to see Nico Rosberg again in the highest category of motorsport world. However, the German keeps the door of the Great Circus more than closed, noting that after leaving he still had two years of contract with Mercedes left, so the money factor was never, is, nor will it be a detail that motivates him to return.

“The salary on that contract also had a lot of zeros”

Everything is going smoothly during the nascent Extreme E, a series of electric sports cars led by the Spanish businessman, Alejandro Agag, and which has teams led by pilots of great experience such as Lewis Hamilton, Nico Rosberg and Jenson Button, who are owners.

In the case of Rosberg, whose roster was a winner on debut, he commented that he has received a large number of calls from companies and sponsors who were impressed by the good level of entertainment and want to be a part of it.

“Sponsor interest in the off-road racing series has accelerated since last month’s debut in Saudi Arabia,” said the 2016 Formula 1 champion.

The German team Rosberg X Racing won in the Al Ula desert with triple Swedish rallycross champion Johan Kristoffersson and Australian rally driver Molly Taylor.

“After our win as a team it’s been amazing, the amount of interest we received from companies saying ‘hey, how can we leverage on this, let’s partner up, can we invest’, all of these things has been phenomenal,” detailed Rosberg in a report from the Reuters news agency.

More sponsors on the way

The German announced IG Prime, IG’s main brokerage division, as the team’s latest partner and said there were others in the works to back his team. “It shows how it’s been received in the world. A good start to the championship,” he stressed.

“The sponsors are absolutely loving it. Also because the return on investment is interesting. When you look at the money they have to put up to the return that they get out, it’s really strong,” he added.

Strengthen his commitment to sustainability

Rosberg assured that the Extreme E comes at a key moment where the need to reverse the damage to the environment is imperative. “Blue Planet meets motor racing for a good cause.”

“It’s electric mobility, which is a massive topic…plus you’ve got this purpose of trying to combat climate change by what we are doing, not only by raising awareness but also by kick-starting initiatives,” he said.

“It just resonates with the moment so much. Companies want to associate themselves with purpose-driven sporting events,” he added.

Rosberg’s latest deal could also benefit the team on the field, via Extreme E’s fan engagement “gridplay” feature.

“The team that has the most votes can decide on the final grid slot. IG Prime employees are supporting us, so it’s a nice partnership like that,” Rosberg said.

Nico Rosberg has an unprecedented racing career. The German after 10 years in Formula 1 snatched a world title from Lewis Hamilton, who has a hegemony in the category.

After that consecration in 2016, Rosberg considered that it was time to change of scene away from starring in a rivalry with the British pilot. Five years later, Rosberg is being the face of the nascent Extreme E.

And it is that his team, Rosberg X Racing has won the two X-Prix disputed to date with the German present in both events.

“It was a very good start to a new championship, it is a difficult challenge. We are proud to win the first two events in the history of the category, it is not easy. When everything is fine, you have to make sure you don’t make mistakes and find your way. We did well, ”Rosberg said in an interview with the newspaper AS.

He also highlighted the presence of several motorsport personalities such as Lewis Hamilton or Jenson Button, the latter even as an Extreme E driver in Saudi Arabia.

“It is incredible how many champions have gathered here. I think everyone believes in Alejandro Agag too, he is a visionary. This is the first motorsport that really has such a strong purpose and that is very, very interesting for everyone who is involved here, also for the sponsors and for the audience ”.

It may also interest you: Hamilton continues with intact aspirations despite Rosberg’s team dominance in Extreme E

The former Mercedes believes that his decision to participate in the Extreme E was influenced by the fact that the series is focused on sustainability and electric mobility. In that sense, he stated that he was proud to be involved and have an impact in the world beyond entertainment.

“I am happy to be here and to see more and more sponsors, investors and others arrive, it is a really positive dynamic,” he added.

Future growth and inclusion

For the head of Rosberg X Racing, the young Extreme E will have significant growth in the future and is based on the fact that there are people who increasingly watch documentaries about the nature of the planet on long-range platforms such as Netflix.

Another factor that is striking for Rosberg is that the races have a man and a woman as drivers of the “Electric Odyssey” and explained that it was difficult to finalize the hiring of Johan Kristoffersson and Molly Taylor for his team because many teams also they wanted.

Molly Taylor and Johan Kristoffersson lead the Extreme E leaderboard with 71 points after the Ocean X-Prix with Lewis Hamilton’s team, X44 as their closest pursuer with 57 points.

Despite the fact that Lewis Hamilton has not been seen in person treading the terrain of the first two races of Extreme E, the seven-time Formula 1 champion has used his social networks and other digital platforms to encourage his team, the X44.

With two greats like Sebastien Loeb and Cristina Gutiérrez as drivers, the team of the record man in the highest category of motorsport has not been able to control what was also his staunch rival, Nico Rosberg, whose squad has won the two X-Prix disputed so far.

In fact, part of that fight between Rosberg and Hamilton was staged last weekend in Senegal when Molly Taylor (Rosberg X Racing) and Cristina Gutiérrez (X44) collided, taking the Spanish runner out of the game.

The incident practically paved the way for Taylor and Johan Kristoffersson, who ended up winning the race. The pair of drivers also managed to win the Desert X-Prix before and comfortably lead the championship.

Praise against adversity

However, Hamilton is not daunted by the emerging hegemony of the Rosberg team and applauds the performance of his pupils so far this season.

“It is being incredible, the stage looks beautiful and I am very proud of what Cristina and Sébastien have done. It is incredible to see them work together and see their growth, which is something natural when you are in front of a new car and you go to such different places.”

“From the comments of the drivers, I understand that this circuit in Senegal was much more technical than the one in Saudi Arabia. So it is incredible to see them both perform at the highest level and it is exciting to see it for me,” stressed the Briton.

The X44 boss continues with his illusions intact by investing his money and dreams in Extreme E. “It’s the first time I’ve had a team and being part of something like that, which is so focused on fighting climate change, is very exciting.”

He stressed that he will maintain his firm commitment in this category, which pursues a valuable purpose to protect the environment and reverse the climate damage that exists until now.

“That is what has brought me to this championship, if you look at the future of the sport it is a great platform to push technology and go to different places and raise awareness of the problems we face. I think Formula 1 and other greats championships can learn from us, promoting this technology is very, very important,” said Hamilton.

The excitement of the Extreme E returns on the weekend of August 28 and 29 in Greenland, another of the paradises affected by climate change.

Sebastian Vettel’s days in Formula 1 seem to be over. The multi-time champion of the highest category of motorsport, who still holds interesting records, is not even the shadow of the one who delighted motor sport fans.

His move to Aston Martin after several gloomy seasons at Ferrari has not improved the driver’s mood and his physical condition is far from the level required for top competition.

With this scenario, other competitions are beginning to see German as a coveted option for their ranks. This is the case of Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton, both starting their team in the nascent Extreme E, who have already launched a “call” to Vettel to offer him a place in their respective teams.

Both Rosberg and Hamilton have pointed out that it is quite possible that the German will end up joining the Extreme E because he is a man of challenges, and the new category has impacted the world of motorsport with only one racing weekend in AlUla.

The marketing and dissemination of the tournament, led by Alejandro Agag and Ali Russell, has taken a hit and already has a significant number of sponsors as well as television stations with broadcasts around the world.

In addition, according to sources in the sports press in Germany, the Extreme E would fit very well in Vettel since he shares the values of sustainability and protection of the environment that the series preaches.

From the environment of the Aston Martin driver, it is known that at the end of the F1 season he will be making “the most important decision of his career.” They emphasize that Vettel does not rule out the definitive retirement from the tracks either, but he is already beginning to be seduced by the offers of the other categories, including the world of rallying of which he is a fan.

Reasons to leave F1

There are several reasons that could lead to Vettel’s divorce with the “Great Circus”. The first, his performance in recent races. In the previous season he finished the world championship in thirteenth position with only seven races in the top ten, two retirements and 33 points.

The other aspect that would put him out of the competition is his high economic record. In the pandemic context, it is difficult for any of the teams to open the checkbook to obtain the services of a pilot who, despite his trajectory, is on the way out.

Solid record

Sebastian Vettel has won four Formula 1 world titles with the Red Bull team in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013, plus three runners-up in 2009, 2017 and 2018, the latter two with the Ferrari team.

He made his debut in 2007 with the BMW Sauber team and participated in 2008 with the Toro Rosso team achieving his first victory in the 2008 Italian Grand Prix.

October 27, 2013 was a memorable date for the German when he became the youngest driver in history to be four-time champion of the highest category of motorsport.

Nico Rosberg, world champion in Formula 1 in 2016 and owner of his own team in the nascent Extreme E, believes that he has paid his debt to motorsport and the carbon footprint that he has left in the world.

And is that the German thinks that sports should have a higher purpose than competing and that is the reason why the owner of Rosberg X Racing signed up for the series of electric SUVs.

“We must build the whole of sport on the foundation of social cause, for the greater good, that’s the most important thing. The best thing would be if Extreme E as a championship can become so successful that events like the Olympics, the World Cup will start looking at what we’re doing here and why people are so interested,” told to The Independent.
