The ERA Championship Series Europe 2023 grid is starting to take an interesting shape for the second season of the category, which seeks to promote the development of young talent aboard electric single-seaters, rescuing principles of sustainability, inclusion, gender equality and sportsmanship.

In this sense, a new driver has been confirmed as part of the upcoming campaign: 18-year-old Canadian/Polish Victor Smialek, who is fully ready to take on the challenge in his young and promising career in the 100% electric single-seater category.

This driver started his path within motorsport racing in manual karts, where he has raced there since 2019, training and making his way towards 2021, as there, he won the Canadian Open in Open Shifter.

He then made the jump to cars in 2022, gaining recognition in Lucky Dog Racing and winning the GT2 and F1600 championship, where he placed second and third in GPF1 in Pro-Am in Montreal.

In addition to that, Smialek was part of the Next Gen Racer 2022 organized by ERA Championship, generating interesting sensations during the competition to come to the conclusion of wanting to participate in the championship as a starting driver.

Smialek in Words

Although his career began at the age of 15, he has a good amount of recognition and prestige on his shoulders. Therefore, he is motivated to give his all in ERA Championship Series Europe 2023 under Canadian license, totally excited to represent that country in the category.

I am very excited to compete in the ERA Championship Series Europe 2023. The calendar will be full of great tracks and it will be my first contact with electric racing, which will be a very fun new challenge,” Smialek assured.

“I was very pleased with everyone involved during the Next Gen Racer. They were all professional and knowledgeable people. I was looking to progress in the car world, so joining for this year was a must-do opportunity,” he concluded.

Through an official press release, ERA Championship confirmed the participation of drivers Ellis Spiezia and Victor Nielsen for the 2023 season of the series to be held in Europe, with the aim of continuing to promote young talent and electric single-seater racing.

Both drivers will be part of the Ellysium Racing team, which has been in the series since last season, and served as the debut of the 100% electric single-seater youth category, aboard the Mitsu-Bachi F110e car.

At 17 years old, Ellis Spiezia will return to the series after being present at the car’s first public shakedown in October 2021, ahead of his debut at the 2022 Pau Grand Prix, where he became the first driver to take pole position for an ERA Championship race.

Now, in addition to his great talent he will return with more experience to continue developing as a driver. “I believe electric is the future of performance and the future of the planet. I am prioritizing electric racing, with the goal is to reach the highest level of the sport and inspire others,” Spiezia assured.

New Objectives

Victor Nielsen will partner with Ellis Spiezia in ERA Championship, who connected with Ellysium Racing through competitive electric karting. There, they realized they shared the same vision of a sustainable future for motorsport.

Thus, having Nielsen’s talent, desire and inspiration on the team will propel the team forward in relation to its goals on and off the track. “I love motorsport and I aim to make it more sustainable. Therefore, I am delighted to join the ERA Championship, as it is a step in the right direction towards sustainable racing,” said Nielsen.

Thus, both drivers join Yashish Manohar (winner of the Next Gen Racer competition) and Emilie Villa (winner of the first ERA Racing Pride scholarship) as the four confirmed drivers for the ERA Championship Series Europe 2023.

ERA Championship is the first and only 100% electric single-seater youth category that was born with the aim of promoting the talent of drivers in their sporting, personal and professional growth stages.

After debuting in style in 2022, the series is preparing to face its second season by announcing that it will award a scholarship valued at 150,000 euros. In this way, drivers who opt for it will have the opportunity to win a fully paid seat for the upcoming campaign.

The scholarship has been named the Next Gen Racer, which seeks to fund the talent of those best suited to compete in the ERA Championship Series Europe 2023.

To qualify for the funding they must attend a testing session to be held at the Pau-Arnos racecourse in Pau-Arnos, France from November 16-18 and 21-22.
Those interested in keeping the seat must be 16 years of age by March 1, 2023 and have an international D license (or equivalent), as well as some competitive experience in karting or automobiles.

ERA Championship will set a precedent in the history of sustainable motorsports as the category that will promote young talent in search of consolidating the first steps of the drivers in their respective professional careers. Under a promising format and with a long way to go, the championship is being prepared with everything by means of tests and free trials.

The Jarama Circuit in Spain and the mythical Hungaroring track in Hungary have served as a preparation stage, which has extended its days there to give the drivers the opportunity to be in contact with the asphalt as much time as possible, discovering their limits and interpreting the data obtained aboard the official single-seater, Mitsu-Bachi F110e.

Milan De Laet was one of the drivers to test the car, giving his impressions about it. “I went quite well, a very hot day, the car was also hot, but we got enough time and information, plus the car felt good, so we were able to test what we wanted to practice,” he said.

In front of an all-electric universe, De Laet highlighted the aspects that most caught his attention about getting aboard the Mitsu-Bachi F110e, as part of the preparation path ahead of the ERA Championship debut. “The power, when you get that much power it becomes an incredible feeling.”

ERA Championship was born under the title of the World’s First Junior Electric Single Seaters Competition. Its mission is to guide the first steps of the youngest drivers so that they can make a breakthrough in this sustainable aspect of motorsports. Therefore, over the last few months they have been working to bring the best to the series.

The series will be supported “hand to hand” with FIA ETCR (Pure ETCR in 2021), therefore, from May 6th to 8th, testing took place in Pau Arnos, France, to extract as much information as possible regarding the championship vehicle, where the 16 year old American, Ellis Spiezia, participated.

After that, they announced the arrival of Software AG as a sponsor of the championship, including its name in the title. However, both parties were already collaborating with each other before, as ERA Championship used the company’s Cumulocity platform in order to obtain vehicle performance data with live streaming to the pitlane.

Knowing the specifics of battery, heat and other upgrades will be key to fine-tuning the car in the race and generating the best on-track strategy, combining the use of technology with feedback from the drivers after they get in the car.

“We have already been working closely with Software AG on this, and we are delighted that the team has decided to extend our relationship by taking on the title sponsorship of our European race series,” said Beth Georgiou, Co-Founder and Director of ERA Championship.

On the other hand, from Software AG also offered their impressions on the matter. “We love how ERA has completely reinvented formula racing by leveraging technology and data. Beth and her team have created a truly inclusive and democratized approach to motorsport,” said Dawn Colossi, CMO of the company.

Thus, with a successful round of testing in Pau and the extension of the link with Software AG, the 100% electric junior single-seater series is preparing to make its official debut on June 10 and 12, at the mythical Hungaroring circuit in Hungary, used in important categories such as Formula 1.

2022 has been labeled as the “Year of Sustainable Motorsports”. Precisely, that was the main topic addressed in the first panel of the third edition of the Green Racing Virtual Summit, where James Taylor, Championship Director of Extreme E, Khalil Beschir, COO and Co-Founder of eSkootr Championship, Valentina Conti, CEO of WES World e-Bike Championship and Beth Georgiou, Co-Founder and Director of ERA Championship, talked about the topic under the leadership of Bill Beverley, Co-Founder of Evolectric.

The electrification of motorsports serves as a platform to educate in an entertaining way the changes that need to be adopted in terms of sustainable mobility. However, all of these racing categories go beyond racing to focus on off-track aspects of environmental conservation.

WES: “Our Main Goal is to Leave the Places Where We Race Better than How We Found Them When We Arrived”

WES World e-Bike Series is an electric mountain bike competition with the UCI World Cup label that travels through various European locations (with projections to visit other continents), promoting the use of this means of transport which can be cataloged as one of the first to be sustainable for many years, where from 2019 WES adds the power of technology to increase its performance and technique.

“We have an advantage over other competitions, and that is that we do not need to build the tracks where we run. We take advantage of nature, where mountains and hills are our main resources.”

On the other hand, she stressed the commitment to continue working for the environment, assuring that the objective is to obtain energy in a 100% sustainable way. In addition, she highlighted the great human work hidden behind the maintenance of the slopes. “It is very important for WES to keep these trails running for the local population.”

Extreme E: “It is not Necessary to Have 20 Races to Generate a Positive Impact”

Without a doubt, Extreme E is one of the fastest growing series, taking into account that they are barely a year old in the world of motorsports. Its vision of sustainability is unique, providing values on and off the track, such as the Count Us In and Legacy Programme initiatives. Using a vehicle weighing 1,780 kilograms, the category visits the most remote places in the world, helps local communities and leaves no trace on site (ecologically speaking).

The category created a platform about positive change. They are totally honest about what they can do and what they can’t do. In fact, for its creation they established that it was not necessary to have 20 or 22 races to have the best impact, betting on quality rather than quantity, and so they reflected this with a calendar designed to run in five locations, with the first title defined in the last race between Rosberg X Racing and X44.

To make it possible to move from one location to another, Extreme E impacted the world with the St. Helena, a large ship in charge of logistics between each X Prix, which reduces the impact on the planet significantly.

eSkootr Championship: “Since the Launch, We Have Been a Carbon Neutral Series”

A new sport for a new generation, inspiring a new movement for safer, sustainable and more liveable cities. That is the vision of the eSkootr Championship (eSC) after adopting the burgeoning  micromobility vehicle and adapting its performance to turn it into a racing machine. Reimagining racing and refresing its significance to influence, inform and inspire.is part of its mission.

Since eSC’s arrival was announced, Khalil assures that they have looked at all aspects necessary in order to be certified as carbon neutral since inception before the first race. The small size of thee S1-X and the championship’s infrastructure helps that significantly compared to other categories.

“If you look at the S1-X in depth you realize how sustainable it is. The  natural fibre of the chassis, the battery. We make sure we meet all these details to be ensure we are carbon neutral, even when we’re not racing.”

Also, he highlighted the work the series is doing in developing a new tire (EcoTyre) that will be used soon, which is made from materials extracted from vegetable oils.

ERA Championship: “Our Series is European, so We Can Travel Anywhere Without Flying”

Perhaps one of the most important series in sustainable motorsports: ERA Championship has the mission to guide and solidify the steps of young drivers entering the world of competition, being the first electric single-seater division dedicated to entry-level drivers.

In collaboration with FIA ETCR they will visit several European circuits, promoting the sustainable values of the series and demonstrating that power does not depend on combustion, as electricity can be equal or even stronger than fossil fuels.

One of the aspects to work on, without any doubt, is the pollution generated by aircraft emissions in each flight, where the damage caused to the atmosphere increases in each heavy cargo transport. There, ERA Championship makes an exceptional contribution by dispensing with air vehicles, since the series focuses on competing in Europe, making the use of aircrafts unnecessary.

The series aims to compete outside the European continent, but sticking to sustainable terms by setting series in every place it wants to visit: “We will also race in other continents but there will always be an original series, so we won’t load our cars on flights around the world, “That’s part of the many things we think we can do differently,” Georgiou commented.

A promising, young talent with an infinite desire to compete at the highest level will take over the ERA Championship Series, as Ellis Spiezia confirmed his involvement for the 2022 season. The American will embark on a new chapter on his career within the motorsports world.

Spiezia spent two years in electric karting in Europe, but the time has come for a bigger leap. The junior electric formula is supported and endorsed by FIA ETCR (formerly known as Pure ETCR) for five weekends across Europe from May through June.

Ellis, also known as “Electric Renegade” has been competing in karting since 2020, focusing his career going forward on electrification sustainability and green outlook. Spiezia is very clear that the future of motorsports goes through sustainable mobility, where he is preparing to be one of the best.

The 16-year-old driver competed at the DEKM, held in Germany. In addition, he competed in four karting categories in 2021, all of which are 100% electrified. As a promising youngster, Spiezia hopes to set an example for the next generations, while trying to prove that a career within electrification is possible.

“In electric motorsports, the performance is undeniable and the parity of materials makes it really about the driver. I know exactly where I stand on the grid. I think sustainable racing will open up new avenues for drivers to have access to seats, focus on developing their skills and have much more visibility within the crowded junior series space,” Ellis said.

Spiezia will be racing under an incredible environment, as his Crew Chief and Manager will be his mom, Michele Spiezia, who is proud of what her son and driver has accomplished so far, though the best is surely yet to come.

“Our greatest asset in approaching this new opportunity with a fresh perspective is that we are not a legacy motorsports family. We will empower a new generation of drivers to prioritize electric motorsport as an exciting path to the top level category,” stated Michele.

About Ellis Spiezia

Ellis Spiezia is a 16-year-old American electric racing driver. Coming of age on and off the track, and in the wake of a global pandemic, Ellis and his family of filmmakers embarked on a unique journey in 2020, leaving their home in Hoboken, New Jersey, and hitting the road to further his competitive career. Electric motorsport became the only accessible and unique entry point into the sport given the parity of materials, cost and his family’s lack of racing experience. The performance spoke for itself.
