With much of the calendar played in season 9 of Formula E, things are not going well at Jaguar Racing, which expected to be positioned in a better place at this early stage. The team is in sixth place, not insignificant when there is still a lot of work to be done, but this does not please the members of the team.

Nick Cassidy and Sebastien Buemi (Envision Racing) are showing what the Jaguar propulsion system can do, as their team is in second place in the team standings, but Jaguar itself, with Sam Bird and Mitch Evans at the wheel, have not lived up to expectations.

When it looked all set for a win in Hyderabad, India, with Evans starting fourth in the standings, Bird crashed heavily in one of the fastest parts of the track: he hit the Maserati MSG Racing machine of Edoardo Mortara. It was such a heavy impact that his team was unable to repair it in time for the race leaving another race weekend without points.

Unmotivated

On the current state of the team, Bird stated that “the guys are really down and I’m down. I just want a good result again, I feel I deserve it, but it’s been a long time coming. I’m doing well, but I don’t have much to show for it.”

“The team worked very hard. We were well prepared and invested a lot and we are always fast. We’re in the top three or four every time we go out on the track. When they take that away from us, it’s really complicated,” he added.

In addition to not being able to take to the track in India, Bird faces a penalty for the Sao Paulo E-Prix, in which he will suffer a five-place drop on the starting grid.

Not Throwing the Towel in

“It was a disappointing setback for my championship aspirations,” Evans said. “We know we have an incredibly fast car, but I couldn’t get the points I think the team deserved. We’ll try again in Sao Paulo.”

For his part, James Barclay, Jaguar‘s director, also regretted the performance in Hyderabad, but assures that they will get out of the current slump. “As a team, we have already shown that we can prepare the cars for the race even in difficult conditions. But with all that damage, that was simply impossible.”

“We proved that the car is great, it’s fast. Luck will be on our side again, we just have to keep it up,” he assured.

After two years of total domination by Mercedes, a team leaving Formula E for Season 9, Jaguar Racing wants to break into the top of the standings and win the team and driver titles.

Mitch Evans and Sam Bird will be in charge of the team’s Gen3 cars, which will take to the track for the first time on Saturday, January 14 at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in Mexico City.

The “Jaguar I-TYPE 6” single-seater will make its debut as the all-electric racing series begins its exciting new phase, which encompasses new technical, sporting and financial regulations. The new Formula E race car is billed as the fastest, lightest and most efficient to date.

Experience Behind the Wheel

Evans and Bird are no strangers to the race track, the former already triumphed in 2020 and the latter achieved a podium and significant points in previous visits to Mexican territory.

This year, the drivers will have to put their skills into practice on the long straights, challenging corners and the new chicane section through the now famous Foro Sol stadium.

“Last season was the most successful season in Formula E, so I’m building on that momentum to start this season and focus on getting a positive result in the first round,” Evans said in the lead-up to the opening round.

He stressed that he has very good memories of his victory three years ago in Mexico City, so he feels ready to start the season with great motivation.

For his part, Bird expressed his excitement for the great atmosphere that the fans always provide in the Mexican capital. “I remember hearing the cheers of the crowd through my helmet, there’s nothing like it. I’m ready to put on a show and get the season off to the best possible start.”

Management Confidence

From the top brass at Jaguar Racing, they have put together a squad that may be capable of fighting for the top spots in the debut of the Gen3 era of the electric single-seater series.

James Barclay, Jaguar Racing Director, noted that having come so close to the title in 2022 has given them the motivation to take on the new campaign.

“With our experienced team; Mitch, Sam and the new Gen3 Jaguar I-TYPE 6, we certainly have an exciting season ahead of us against world-class opposition. With so much to learn about the new cars, the new race format and Hankook tires, this first race in Mexico will be about being as prepared as possible and ready to adapt,” he stressed.

In the same line, Phil Charles, Jaguar’s Technical Manager, stated that Mexico’s scenario represents a great challenge from the fans’ point of view, as well as from the weather conditions.

“While ambient temperatures are not forecast to be particularly high for this visit, the addition of the chicane on the back straight means that the tires don’t have much time to cool down during the lap,” he explained.

Charles added that the high-speed final corner represents one of the most challenging throughout the season, so setups, systems and controllers must be fully synchronized to perform well in Mexico City.

The third generation (Gen3) era of Formula E is just around the corner and motivation is high. A week ago, automotive giant Porsche unveiled its portentous car, and now it’s Jaguar Racing doing the same to test its single-seater that will debut in season 9.

Jaguar Test Driver, Sacha Fenestraz, was in charge of completing the British brand’s first test laps of the I-TYPE Gen3 development car, gathering valuable data and information to fine-tune all the details for the upcoming 2023 championship.

The team continues to live important days after Mitch Evans’ victory in the Jakarta E-Prix, a triumph that put the team back in the fight for the championship. Now, the unveiling and testing of the car, represents another memorable achievement in the history of the institution.

“A key milestone has been marked for Jaguar TCS Racing as we drove our new Gen3 Jaguar I-TYPE development car for the first time,” said Team Principal, James Barclay.

He said the new Gen3 car will be the most efficient in the world and marks a significant technological breakthrough for the all-electric world championship.

“This initial test is key in the development of the new Jaguar I-TYPE, and is a major achievement in our ongoing R&D process that originally began in 2020. Excitement is really starting to build for the whole team as we look forward to the next generation of Formula E.”

Technical Details

Regarding the virtues of the single-seater, Jaguar TCS Racing Technical Manager, Phil Charles, highlighted that with 100kW of extra power, no rear hydraulic brakes, 600kW of ultra-high power, it will become a stunning all-new, all-electric race car for season 9.

He detailed that it has great speed charge capabilities and is much lighter than the Gen2, so expectations and motivation are high.

“These tests proved extremely valuable for the team and now we will return to the factory to analyze the learnings and continue to develop the car. We are all looking forward to seeing the progress of the development car as we look forward to the next generation of Formula,” Charles emphasized.

The Formula E Roman stage was a real honeymoon for Mitch Evans and Jaguar. For the second consecutive day, the New Zealander conquered the top of the podium to give a great show on the street circuit of Italy.

Evans, who came into the weekend with only one point to his credit and tenth place in the standings, once again put on a dominant performance, just as he did on Saturday.

Without focusing on clear duels, the driver was able to maintain his position after starting fourth on the grid and was able to efficiently manage the energy, a situation that has been key in the last competitions of the electric single-seater series.

In the midst of these circumstances, Evans activated the Attack Mode, which gave him an advantage and he used it in the right time since the Safety Car then appeared. With that extra push and the one he had saved in the race, he had no problems to pass Robin Frinjs (Envision) and André Lotterer (Porsche) and to conquer the victory.

Collision Endangered Evans

Just as Evans was on his way to a comfortable victory, an accident involving Nick Cassidy would add some excitement to the E-Prix.

Evans lost his advantage and, no longer in attack mode, had to defend himself from Vergne, Sunday’s poleman who also arrived with more electric power at the end. However, that was not enough to stand up to the Jaguar representative, but it was sufficient to take the overall lead to the detriment of Eduardo Mortara.

Mortara did not have a good Sunday, being once again out of the qualifying elimination phase, starting in 11th place and abandoning after a collision with Da Costa when he was trying to recover, as he did on Saturday.

On the other hand, the Mercedes drivers were not relevant on Sunday. Nick De Vries, reigning champion, had an incident in qualifying that earned him a penalty and he started 13th, so he was always out of the fight. Vandoorne, who competed until the end on Saturday, this time did not perform either in qualifying (8th) or in the race, where he finished fifth, but never seemed to have a chance to fight at least for the podium.

After this interesting day, Formula E returns on the weekend of April 29 and 30, with the incentive of the presentation of the third generation vehicle (Gen3), on April 28 in Monaco.

11 teams and 22 drivers gathered in the mythical city of Rome for the Formula E E-Prix, a street circuit that honors emblematic monuments of the Italian capital.

The event, which welcomed fans after two years of pandemic, had a chaotic start after Oliver Rowland crashed into a wall, affecting other racers, which forced the appearance of yellow flags.

Once the accident was over, Mitch Evans, from Jaguar team, was the great leader of the opening day to give the first victory of the year to the British team. It was a round day for the squad with the fifth place of Sam Bird, who despite having started thirteenth, made a great comeback that placed him in the top 10.

Evans led during the second half of the race and was able to withstand the pressure of Stofel Vandoorne – pole winner – and Robin Frijns in a nice fight that went to the Jaguar representative.

Mortara Still in the Lead

Despite not having a good start by being left out of the duel phase in qualifying, just like Bird, Eduardo Mortara had an important rebound that left him in seventh place.

The result allowed the ROKiT Venturi Racing driver to maintain the overall lead with 49 points, followed by Vandoorne with 46 and the 42 units accumulated by Frinjs.

Mercedes Squandered the Lead

After a solid qualifying stint for Vandoorne, it looked like he might take the win after completing both activations of the attack mode in the lead. However, the Jaguar drivers had already saved energy and started an all-out offensive, which also coincided with the slowdown of the Mercedes, DS and Frinjs, who failed to manage energy throughout the day.

This Sunday, Rome will host the second Formula E race scheduled in the city, where the defeated drivers will be looking for vindication, while Jaguar will have the mission to continue its ascent after Saturday’s important result.

How teams and drivers manage their vehicles’ energy remains a key factor for good results in Formula E. Even with the third-generation (Gen3) car, which series promoters say will have more power, the autonomy issue will remain crucial in the development of each race.

In this sense, the Jaguar Racing team is implementing several actions, in order to add efficiency to its batteries and have optimal storage for the E-Prix that are about to be disputed during Season 8, currently underway.

One of the team’s strategies to support its participation in Formula E is the use of recycled batteries from theI-Pace,the brand’s electric SUV.

Related content: Di Grassi on the Gen3 Car: We Still Need to Manage Energy in Racing

The used car forms the basis of the Off-Grid Energy Storage System (ESS) developed by portable generator company Pramac. It is charged by solar panels and uses cells from an I-Pace battery pack to provide a mobile power source where grid power may not be available, such as a Formula E paddock.

Jaguar used the ESS during preseason testing in the UK and Spain, where the batteries powered diagnostic equipment for the race cars and provided auxiliary power for the team’s garage.

According to an official statement from the team, they are considering further use of mobile energy storage, as with the Formula E scenario of using temporary street circuits, there are no permanent garages with grid-connected power supplies, so this would be an interesting alternative.

I-Pace Battery Structure

The car arranged to recycle its batteries and supply them to Jaguar’s Formula E single-seater, features Pramac’s state-of-the-art technology system, which has a capacity of 125 kwh, with AC charging capability of 22 kw for electric vehicles.

The I-Pace was upgraded with a new interface and faster charging in 2020, but those upgrades were held for the U.S. until this 2022. According to Jaguar, the I-Pace’s slow interface and inconsistent range have been its main issues with this model in early introductions.

Jaguar I-Pace

Jaguar is offering at least an 8-year/100,000-mile battery warranty, which guarantees a 70% state of charge. That anticipates battery degradation limits, and once the battery pack can no longer be used for automotive or energy storage applications, Jaguar claims it is 95% recyclable.

The next Jaguar EVs will be built from a new platform called Panthera, with the aim of giving the manufacturer a unique design and marking a significant change in the industry.

Formula E teams are fine-tuning their artillery ahead of Season 8 of the electric single-seater category. The tournament will arrive by 2022 with a new qualifying format and an expanded calendar with more races and new venues.

As for Jaguar Racing, it is reorganizing all departments and established a major alliance to strengthen the structure and development with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), a global leader on information technology, consulting and business solutions.

The India-based company expands the global sponsorship portfolio in sporting events, which already includes the New York, London and Amsterdam marathons, and will now venture into sustainable motorsport.

The Partnership’s Focus

Jaguar Land Rover and TCS will build on a broad commercial relationship. Translating leadership in technology transformation and experience of working with key players across the automotive value chain, the company has the ambition and conviction to support the team to become a global role model for electrification.

The rebranding of the team includes a rebranding of the successful Jaguar I-TYPE 5 race car for the upcoming Formula E season. In addition, Jaguar TCS Racing has begun a freshening of its image as part of the “Reimagine” strategy.

Jaguar TCS Racing aims to “reimagine racing” and use a high-profile championship to test, learn, develop, collaborate and share innovations, including cutting-edge electric vehicle technologies across Jaguar Land Rover, to benefit the future development of road cars.

The learnings and technology transfer from Formula E will help reinvent the Jaguar brand as an all-electric luxury manufacturer starting in 2025, matching the company’s commitment to the Gen3 era.

Organizational Changes

In the midst of Jaguar’s ongoing revamp, the experienced James Barclay takes over as managing director of Jaguar Land Rover Motorsport Limited, in addition to his role as team principal of Jaguar TCS Racing.

Meanwhile, Jaguar Land Rover CEO, Thierry Bolloré, becomes chairman of the new organization. All future opportunities and benefits for the Jaguar and Land Rover brands will be explored through this newly formed division.

Heading into the final Gen2 season after the team’s most successful Formula E campaign, where they finished as runner-up on the constructors’ table, the British squad has a highly competitive and efficient single-seater racing car in the Jaguar I-TYPE 5, and one of the strongest driver pairings with Sam Bird and Mitch Evans returning to provide speed, consistency and highly valuable experience.

Only 14 points separates Sam Bird from leading the Championship, currently held by Nyck de Vries with 91 points. The Jaguar Racing driver had a black weekend in London, where he was unable to score points due a couple of retirements.

Bird regretted not being able to score at the London E-Prix, as he was leading before the start: “We had the pace. It just didn’t happen for us”.

The Briton, however, remains with high hopes, because a good run in this weekend’s double-header in Berlin, closing E-Prix season seven, would allow him to get his first Formula E title, a symbolic fact because Sam has been with the electric single-seater series since its debut in 2014.

“Winning the title would be super. It’s something I’ve been working on for seven years. I’d be really excited if I do it,” said the 34-year-old driver.

Setting his Sights on Berlin

Sam has promised himself to do all his best in Berlin, freeing from any pressure, as he added that, regardless the result, he will keep his head up for doing a good job.

“I had some positive results there in the past. I have never won in Berlin, but I had one or two podiums. So, there’s no reason why I couldn’t add one more to that count,” he said.

He continued, “If I I can leave Berlin knowing that I’ve done everything in my power to try to win the Championship and it’s not happening for some reason, I will be at ease.”

“We can leave Berlin with something really special,” the driver noted, while referring at the same time to the current campaign as his “best season” so far.

With only two dates left for the end of Formula E’s seventh season, the British team Jaguar Racing is still battling for Team Championship, ranking 3rd, 10 points away from the first place.

Besides all the achievements earned by the team, the drivers’ performance stands out. In this sense, the team has confirmed that New Zealand pilot Mitch Evans will continue to drive the Gen 2 Jaguar I-Type 5 for the next season of the 100% electric single-seater competition.

Specifically, Evans, who has been with the team since 2016, will ride with Jaguar for two more seasons so far, which means he will be on board when the series’ third generation of cars, dubbed Gen 3, kicks in.

“I have been approached by other teams, but my home is and will be Jaguar. We are currently experiencing good results on track; Jaguar I-TYPE 5 has excellent performance and we are ready to compete with anyone on the grid”, were Evans’ words.

Meanwhile, Jaguar Racing team principal, James Barclay, said that Mitch is one of the best talents in Formula E, and a key asset to the team.

“Mitch’s speed and track results in Formula E speak for themselves, and we have continued building a formidable partnership year after year,” he said.

Mitch Evans after the London E-Prix

Evans in Season Seven

After the 13th race held in London, Evans holds the eighth position with 75 points, 20 points behind Nyck de Vries at the top of the standings.

So far, he has taken 4 podiums at the lowest level, enough not only to be confirmed by Jaguar Racing, but also to keep his (minimal) hopes of winning the championship.

His teammate Sam Bird, meanwhile, keeps more chances of winning the season, since he is in third place, only six units away from the lead.

The actions will be defined next weekend in Berlin, on August 14 and 15, where the 14th and 15th rounds will take place and define the ABB FIA Formula E Champion, on its first edition as a World Championship.
