The United Nations Climate Change Conference 2021 (COP26) is taking place in Glasgow, Scotland. There, representatives from various countries are present to discuss the effects of this phenomenon in the world, as well as to propose and implement solutions to reverse the situation. Taking advantage of the global exposure window, a hydrogen-powered ambulance was on display thanks to ULEMCo.

This company showed the public health vehicle called Project Zerro (Zero Emission Rapid Response Operations) that undoubtedly contributes to the required green change. It has several features to make operations easier when providing health services, and of course, maintaining the required standards for a vehicle of this type.

The mechanical section is 100% electric, a range extender with a hydrogen fuel cell, a hybrid scheme capable of providing travel over 300 miles (480 kilometers approximately). The ambulance has been promoted by the Yorkshire County Health Service (England).

In fact, the first unit is manufactured and assembled, being the first COP26 attendees to detail it closely and presence that health services can also contribute to reduce emissions. Previously, several police departments around the world have opted for electric or hydrogen-powered vehicles, but when it comes to ambulances, this is the first sustainable and green option.

Among the race that different manufacturers have decided to take on to contribute to environmental responsibility, profitable business models are also being sought in global markets.

One of them is Toyota, a company that, besides developing electric vehicles, has also forged a strategy to build hydrogen cars. To achieve this goal, the firm will set up a factory to carry out fuel cell units in Kentucky, United States, starting in 2023.

The project has as its central focus to establish a dedicated production line for fuel cell modules at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky. They will be targeted for heavy-duty truck applications, including semi-trailers, that the company has been producing with its Hino subsidiary.

Market Pioneers

This program to be initiated by the organization is the first large-scale commitment to the fuel cell. It is no longer a question of manufacturing a few Toyota Mirai at an extremely gradual pace by technicians who were producing the Lexus LFA at the time, but rather Toyota intends to generate a large volume of these fuel cell modules.

The company’s unit will offer up to 160 kW of continuous power and will weigh around 635 kg, far less than many of the battery options available for commuter applications.

Related content: Nuro Announces Ambitious Plan for the Future of Autonomous Driving

The kit will be sold as a ready-to-run pack, which includes a high-voltage battery, electric motors, transmission and the necessary hydrogen storage system.

“Truck manufacturers will be able to purchase a fully integrated and validated fuel cell electric propulsion system, providing their customers with an emission-free option for the heavy-duty vehicle segment,” said Tetsuo Ogawa, president and CEO of Toyota Motor North America.

How It Works

Toyota details on its official website that the fuel cell system being developed is more energy efficient than internal combustion engines, and has no CO2 or pollutants emitted when operating. Moreover, drivers may expect the same comfort level as gasoline-powered vehicles, with a generous range and minimal refueling time.

They detail that it can go as far as any similarly sized gasoline vehicle, but with a hydrogen-filled tank. “It takes only three to five minutes to fill it when empty. The reward is smooth and quiet operation, great performance and water vapor as the only exhaust emission.”

Moving towards a future where hydrogen will play a key role in electromobility, Spain will have a fully operational public hydrogen plant by the end of 2021, taking an important step towards electromobility and the generation of alternative energy sources for the transportation sector.

The plant will aim to supply both public and private units on a long-term basis. However, it will initially be used to provide hydrogen to Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) buses, responsible for covering urban routes in Barcelona, a city committed to this type of green fuel.

This will be possible due to the 6 million euros in loan that Iberdrola has settled with the Official Credit Institute (ICO), under the standards of the ‘Connecting Europe Facility’, an European Union initiative. The bank plays a fundamental role in the release of the necessary resources to favor this type of sustainable projects.

Additionally, the hydrogen plant will have a 3.7 million euro subvention to build a 5,000 square meter plot of land at the industrial park of Zona Franca in Barcelona, with operations starting in November 2021, or at least this is the estimated date.

So, a total of 8 buses (acquired by TMB in 2020) will be supplied with green hydrogen produced by electrolysis. This will not be a simple challenge, since each transportation unit daily consumes 160 kilos of green fuel, but the project has the necessary resources to succeed, from an economic, technological and human point of view.

Moreover, the partnership between Iberdrola and ICO has been agreed for 10 years, clearly showing their intentions to transform Barcelona into a hydrogen powered and sustained place. This “pilot plan” will also be used as a test to evaluate possible extensions in Spain, and later, beyond its borders.

Hydrogen Commitment

It is noteworthy that Iberdrola has full confidence on hydrogen, and their investments, projects and plans prove it. Heavy transport and industrial processes are among the sectors that the Bilbao-based company has targeted, and the group is responsible for the construction of the largest hydrogen plant in Europe.

The use of hydrogen as tomorrow’s fuel has great advances beyond vehicles, including airplanes and streetcars. The latter sector will be promoted by Talgo and the company’s first train of this kind in collaboration with Repsol, which will provide all its knowledge for studies and development.

Both companies are from Spain and will put their hands to work for giving life to Vittal-One, the first hydrogen train which was introduced in 2020, to replace current machines powered by diesel, a fuel source generating carbon emissions harmful to the planet.

This name has been chosen to demonstrate hydrogen’s “vitality”, being the first element on the periodic table (Vittal-One = One vital). Talgo opted this way to baptize its creation, promising to mark a milestone in sustainable mobility.

The first real-world tests are scheduled for this year in order to start the first stage of the project. Depending on the information obtained from these tests, manufacturing processes would begin between 2021 and 2023, to complete the hydrogen fuel cell’s inclusion in the streetcar sector.

Repsol’s Role on the Vittal-One Train

While Repsol has an important presence in the Moto GP, the company will provide all its expertise on the first Talgo hydrogen fuel cell-powered train, as the main supplier of the necessary infrastructure to generate the hydrogen for the entire network.

One of the most intriguing details is how Repsol generates the hydrogen. The Spanish company extracts organic wastes from its industrial facilities to produce biogas, which will serve as the main “engine” to produce it.

As for the train’s operating system, it employs electrified power units positioned on the axles, which are powered by energy generated by the hydrogen cell, which burns the fuel and converts it into electric charge.

Following its commitment to reduce carbon emissions, Air Nostrum confirmed through an official statement that the airline will be one of the first (along with Ravn Alaska and Icelandair) to have hydrogen-powered aircraft, after introducing the Dash-8 turboprop to its fleet.

Air Nostrum’s agreement was made with Universal Hydrogen to supply the aircraft fleet in the present and future, leading the way to green mobility due to millions of tons produced annually from commercial and cargo flights.

In order to introduce hydrogen technology to current aircraft, the airline would purchase 11 turboprop conversion kits, equipped with a hydrogen fuel cell and a fully electrified engine to replace the currently equipped power units.

Air Nostrum and Hydrogen as Future of Aviation

Regarding the full hydrogen transition, Air Nostrum confirmed that it is confident that hydrogen will be established as a default technology for mobility through the skies, although the full conversion to a zero-emission setup will be implemented after design, performance, operability and safety issues have been evaluated.

To see these planes operating on commercial flights, we will have to wait until 2025, when Universal Hydrogen and Air Nostrum plan to receive up to 60 passengers per trip on routes covering up to 1,000 kilometers.

The future mobility points out new ways to move from one point to another, but the best of all is that it shows a sustainable side totally necessary in current times where the planet suffers the consequences of the tons of carbon dioxide emitted annually as a result of gasoline or diesel consumption.

Therefore, several car manufacturers are betting on a wide range of hydrogen fuel cell to contribute to this necessary restructuration. Toyota is a pioneer in this sector, Hyundai is also involved and even Renault through its HYVIA program.

HYVIA represents the hydrogen green ecosystem developed by Renault to power vehicles with this environmentally friendly fuel, as well as its storage and distribution. “HY” stands for hydrogen, “VIA” for road, which represents a complete “hydrogen road” that comes to the market by the French brand in collaboration with Plug Power.

Hyundai achieves another milestone on its path toward a change in policies for electric and hydrogen battery-powered vehicles. The manufacturer announced its Xcient fleet of trucks in Switzerland has already reached one million kilometers driven in just 11 months.

During that time, the South Korean company’s cars have reduced carbon (CO2) emissions by more than 631 tons. Following their arrival in Switzerland in October 2020, the 46 hydrogen fuel cell trucks achieved this milestone in service of 25 Switzerland-based logistics, distribution and supermarket supply companies.

The companies that rely on these new-era trucks praise their extensive autonomy and fast refueling, two essential aspects for heavy transport which make this technology an ideal solution for their operations.

Related content: Nico Rosberg reveals his top 5 drivers

Jörg Ackermann, President of the H2 Mobility Switzerland Association, noted “the Swiss transport and logistics companies are convinced that hydrogen fuel cell commercial vehicles have greatest potential among various alternative energy vehicles.”

He detailed that partner organizations “are not limited only to introduce hydrogen fuel cell trucks. They have high expectations with hydrogen as an energy source, which has a great potential for the future, and believe that it will be the key to transition to green energy.”

Specifically, the hydrogen’s biggest advantage is its excellent storage capacity. So it will play an important role in the green energy era. Many distribution companies are already experiencing benefits by using Xcient fuel cell trucks firsthand, and I believe that if the summer operation is successfully completed, the demand for fuel cell trucks will grow even more

Jörg Ackermann, President of the H2 Mobility

Technology growth and expansion

Hyundai reported that after the success of Xcient in Switzerland, they expect to ship 140 units of 2021 model by the end of this year. Leading this green switch even further, their fleet will expand to 1,600 hydrogen-electric trucks by 2025.

The company also estimates that by 2030 its production capability will increase to around 500,000 fuel-cell vehicles, considering the construction of all its partner companies.

In addition, Hyundai is working with bus operators in Germany to conduct in-service testing of its Elec City Fuel Cell hydrogen model, while exploring opportunities to introduce the zero-emission vehicle to the European market.

“We are planning to expand to other European countries next year,” said Mark Freymüller, general manager of Hyundai Hydrogen Mobility. “Germany and the Netherlands are the most likely, but there is also a great interest in our vehicles in nearly all European countries.”

With the Swiss experience and the rapid expansion of this innovation, the company hopes to demonstrate that hydrogen-powered buses are a reliable and efficient solution for commercial transportation.

With a distinctly futuristic look accompanied by an elegant black and white color scheme, the global company Segway intends to launch an electric motorcycle powered by hydrogen.

The vehicle will be called Segway Apex H2 and its performance characteristics are perhaps its most relevant attributes.

The brand, which has currently started a crowfunding between April 1 and 30, aimed at the first 99 people interested in the project, promises a two-wheeler with the ability to reach 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in just 4 seconds, with a power of 60kW.

The sustenance

The creators of the Segway Apex H2 have a purpose between eyebrows to fulfill, and the motorcycle with hydrogen fuel cells has several spaces to put and subtract small hydrogen cans that can be easily loaded.

However, there is a possibility that Segway will work on a method that allows hydrogen to be stored at home, considering that very few countries (except Japan and some parts of Germany) have infrastructure to supply hydrogen.

Price and delivery

Through its web portal, the manufacturer has announced that the hydrogen-powered electric motorcycle will have an initial price of € 9,000, intending to make the first deliveries by 2023.

About Segway

With a presence in more than 80 countries and regions, Segway is an American company dedicated to the manufacture of personal transportation founded in 1999 by Dean Kamen.

Its headquarters are located in Bedford and since 2015 it was acquired by the Chinese company Ninebot. Since then, they have been inclined to make scooters smaller than usual. In addition, in the middle of the alliance they have been able to develop an electric unicycle called the Ninebot by Segway One S2.

In November 2020, the manufacturer launched crowdfunding for the Ninebot Gokart Pro, collecting more than $ 1 million in just 9 days.

With large automotive markets such as Canada, France, the United Kingdom, Spain or the state of California (USA) committed to leaving diesel and gasoline behind for the next two decades, the days of combustion engines seem numbered. However, in many situations, battery-powered motors will not be able to cover all needs.

“Electricity is not everything,” said Udo Rügheimer, the head of innovation and technology communications at Audi. “We need to use more renewable energy but we also need another form of energy that we could use instead when the sun is not shining and the wind is not blowing.”

The 2035 and 2040 are the dates when it will be prohibited to sell cars with combustion engines, creating the impression that the world is moving towards a future of electric mobility.

Nevertheless, there will be other vehicles that have to use alternative energy sources, according to several experts, industry officials and government representatives who spoke with Insider from one of the hubs of the transportation industry, Germany.

Other routes to explore

One of the most important alternatives to electric batteries is fuel cells, which use synthetic fuels like hydrogen to store and produce energy.

The head of the International Clean Transportation Council, a nonprofit research institution, Peter Mock, explained that considering the high costs of hydrogen, it would currently only make financial and environmental sense to apply this technology in aviation.

Philipp Prein of the Berlin-based clean transport think tank Agora Verkehrswende, believe that synthetic fuels will also be needed in shipping, which accounts for a significant part of global pollution, from ships carrying goods to pleasure cruises.

“When it comes to maritime, the options are to keep using combustion engines or transition to fuel cells,” explain Klaus Bonhoff, the director general for policy issues at the German Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure.

Related content: Swedish university manufacture a battery capable of allowing massive energy storage

The vehicles whose future is most uncertain are trucks. Many thinks they have three options – electric batteries, hydrogen batteries or wired electricity – but developing them all would be too expensive.

Batteries are not such an obvious choice in this case, due to the high-energy consumption of these heavy vehicles and the long distances they need to cover in a short period of time, which exacerbates the problem of range, or the need to increase the distances that an electric vehicle can do without recharging, something that also affects passenger cars.

At the same time, the possibility of using overhead cables such as those used by urban trams and trolleybuses at the time might not be such a strange idea. Siemens tested what was called an eHighway in Sweden in 2016 and did a similar project in Carson, California in 2017. A highway near Frankfurt (Germany) was prepared to use this technology and is in its second year of use before the Germans decide whether or not to continue with the project.

Read also: NASA invents ecological tires that does not requires air

Martin Lange, responsible for combating pollution and saving energy in transport at the German Environment Agency, considers that these roads with suspended cables are a good alternative, but they would need the European states to reach a consensus and coordinate to build the necessary infrastructure.

The other alternative for trucks is hydrogen cells. From a macroeconomic point of view, Lange sees them as the most expensive solution. However, Ferdinand Dudenhöffer, founder of the Center for Automotive Research at the University of Duisburg-Essen (Germany), believes that in these types of large and heavy vehicles, fuel cells can “win the race” because they offer a greater efficiency and do not require as much investment in the refueling infrastructure.

“With trucks and buses, one would only need a few fueling stations along one highway,” Dudenhöffer said.

He also explains that the heavy vehicles would be able to run for more than 310 miles in one fill-up. “Therefore, creating the infrastructure is feasible from an investment perspective as those fueling stations would also be generating a lot of traffic.”
