Since the creation of Extreme E, one of the drivers that has fought for the title in every season has been Rosberg X Racing. Now, facing a third adventure in the 100% electric off-road category, there are no indications to think that they will not be protagonists, although, for 2023 they will do so under a new image.

The team of Formula 1 champion Nico Rosberg is preparing for the debut of the upcoming season to be held in NEOM, Saudi Arabia, where it already knows its confirmed driver pair: Mikaela Åhlin-Kottulinsky and Johan Kristoffersson. Now, the same expert hands will fight for the championship with different aesthetic details.

To adorn the 1,780-kilogram ODYSSEY 21, black was used as the predominant color of the design, covering a large part of the car in various areas (doors, hood, rear and some spaces on the roof). This color had always been present on the car, although last year it was complemented by white.

More Light Blue

Now, the light blue that was barely seen in 2022 will take greater prominence in the new season of Extreme E, taking completely the structure of the logo, the team name, touches of ornamentation in certain areas of the vehicle, which highlights a line on the rim of the tires, symmetrical with the rest of the design.

In this way and under new colors, Rosberg X Racing will try to achieve its second title in the category. Recall that they appear in the history books of Extreme E as the first champions, after showing solid in 2021, defining the title in the final race (Jurassic X Prix) against X44.

The following year they also fought at the top of the table, and in fact, they arrived as great favorites to the final dispute (Energy X Prix), but a series of drawbacks coupled with an impeccable driving of X44, ended up snatching them what would have been the two-championship.

Finally, knowing what it is like to win the series, having two years of experience and having great drivers, makes them once again candidates for the title, understanding that every point will be vital to avoid the outcome that happened last season.

More and more, purposeful sports initiatives are coming to the sports market, knowing that the future will be electric, therefore, they are betting on elaborating new and daring unique competition categories, with special additives that turn them into new ways of feeling speed.

In that sense, Ace Championship will join a bunch of electric competitions, after Nina Abt Dreier, Marketing Specialist who has worked for Extreme E, Formula E and Red Bull, revealed the news through her official LinkedIn profile.

At the moment not many details are known about it, however, the images revealed through its official channels show a car similar to the second generation of Formula E. “After more than three incredible years with Extreme E, I’ve been working on an exciting new project that we can finally reveal,” says Abt Dreier.

“This new four-wheel electric racing series that focuses on talent development and innovation seeks to develop motorsport in underrepresented markets and deliver competitive and exciting racing,” continues Nina Abt Dreider.

New Electric Racing to Arrive in 2024

Dilbagh Gill is listed as CEO and Founder of Ace Championship, who is well-known in the Formula E world after serving as former CEO of Mahindra Racing, will be at the helm of a category that will seek to develop talent at all levels, ensuring that this championship is a “feeder” platform for drivers and engineering talent to move on to other racing series.

In this way, the series also aims to become a leading talent development unit by offering an affordable entry to racing for young drivers, providing an unprecedented opportunity to grow and hone their skills.

It will feature two levels of competition: the entry level Challenger Series and the top-tier Championship, where both categories will feature the same car, meaning each team will have up to four drivers in two categories with two cars.

The world is changing very fast. One car that will perform at two different power levels. There are people out there coming here who want to become engineers, so we feel Ace Championship could be a perfect clearance for them. This championship will break down barriers and allow people to get into motorsports. It’s about innovation and opportunity,” says Dilbagh Gill.

Through an official press release, ERA Championship confirmed the participation of drivers Ellis Spiezia and Victor Nielsen for the 2023 season of the series to be held in Europe, with the aim of continuing to promote young talent and electric single-seater racing.

Both drivers will be part of the Ellysium Racing team, which has been in the series since last season, and served as the debut of the 100% electric single-seater youth category, aboard the Mitsu-Bachi F110e car.

At 17 years old, Ellis Spiezia will return to the series after being present at the car’s first public shakedown in October 2021, ahead of his debut at the 2022 Pau Grand Prix, where he became the first driver to take pole position for an ERA Championship race.

Now, in addition to his great talent he will return with more experience to continue developing as a driver. “I believe electric is the future of performance and the future of the planet. I am prioritizing electric racing, with the goal is to reach the highest level of the sport and inspire others,” Spiezia assured.

New Objectives

Victor Nielsen will partner with Ellis Spiezia in ERA Championship, who connected with Ellysium Racing through competitive electric karting. There, they realized they shared the same vision of a sustainable future for motorsport.

Thus, having Nielsen’s talent, desire and inspiration on the team will propel the team forward in relation to its goals on and off the track. “I love motorsport and I aim to make it more sustainable. Therefore, I am delighted to join the ERA Championship, as it is a step in the right direction towards sustainable racing,” said Nielsen.

Thus, both drivers join Yashish Manohar (winner of the Next Gen Racer competition) and Emilie Villa (winner of the first ERA Racing Pride scholarship) as the four confirmed drivers for the ERA Championship Series Europe 2023.

FIA ETCR had set a precedent the previous year after competing under the name Pure ETCR. However, for 2022 it took an impressive leap in quality after adopting FIA homologation and racing this year under a new name: FIA ETCR eTouring Car World Cup.

However, in the words of Xavier Gavory, Series Director, racing under the Pure ETCR format was more about a test season. “It was a fitting launch pad towards a bright future. I am particularly proud of the fact that we managed to keep our DNA, to be different and daring,” he assured.

Of course, he highlighted the commitment to sustainability as a core element of the series. “We serve the sport right through a different race format with short and sharp battles, plus a much more sustainable approach,” he emphasized.

FIA ETCR 2022

The category is barely two years old counting the previous format. There is still a long way to go, although, it brings with it all the necessary elements to establish itself as one of the most attractive touring divisions in motorsport, with the added advantage of being aligned with electrification going forward.

FIA ETCR is still young, but it is getting stronger despite the challenges along the way. The most important element is the fact that we are stepping up and building momentum to become an FIA World Cup represents a big step forward,” Gavory noted.

“On the track, the action was phenomenal with so many different scenarios in our race format. We saw photo finishes, teammates crashing into each other, drivers talking directly to their rivals while still on the track to express their opinions, team tactics and dramatic moments off the track,” he finished.

A few weeks ago, WES announced the official calendar of the UCI E-MTB XC World Cup. Several interesting news and novelties accompanied this revelation. New circuits will take over the competition, while a new race format will be premiered with fans in anticipation.

The legendary Spa-Francorchamps circuit will receive all the action, adrenaline and speed of this sustainable category, being one of the most attractive scenarios to be visited by the series. However, before admiring the competition, it is necessary to know exactly how the format works in which the cyclists will try to achieve glory.

The championship will be run under a double race format, where the qualirace will establish the order of the riders prior to each valid, twice per weekend. Diversity will continue to be part of it, where men and women will race together. The top 50 finishers of each gender will be part of the following WES UCI E-MTB XC World Cup race.

(Photo: WES World E-Bike Series)

The route of each course will be announced prior to each event. A great combination of mountain, coastal and urban areas will guarantee adrenaline-filled action and challenges to overcome. In addition, there are individual prizes to be awarded at each round:

Magneti Marelli Checkstar Power Lap: Will be awarded to the rider who achieves the fastest lap.

WES Holeshot: Will be given to the fastest driver at the start of each race after the first corner.

Of course, at the end of the season there will be an individual and team champion. However, if a bike manufacturer supplies vehicles to more than one team, he will also be eligible for a separate title. The same will apply to the motor manufacturers.

The return of Extreme E to action will have a positive news for the category, as Enel has been confirmed as the main sponsor for the Island X Prix, an event that will take place in Sardinia, Italy, from October 23 to 24, being the first race to be held on European territory.

Thus, the name of the event will officially be Enel Island X Prix. Let’s remember that the clean energy company and the 100% electric SUV division joined forces at the beginning of the year to use the competition as a platform to develop new charging technologies, as well as the JuicePump 40 Race Edition.

“I am delighted that Enel X has extended our partnership to become the title sponsor of this event. The brand is already supporting the series through its charging technology, invaluable as we showcase new innovations within electric motorsport,” said Alejandro Agag, Extreme E Founder and CEO.

On the other hand, Francesco Venturini, CEO of Enel X, also offered his statements following the strengthening of the union between the two parties. “As title sponsor of the Island X Prix, at Enel X we are pleased to support Sardinia with legacy projects as a proof of our commitment to make concrete contributions to the region, for which the company is paying special attention through its projects aimed at fostering the electrification of energy use.”

This fourth round of the championship will take place at the Army’s Capo Teulada training area in Sulcis-Iglesiente. The venue is loaded with history and will feature some of the biggest and most talented names in motorsport: Sébastien Loeb, Carlos Sainz Snr., The Hansen brothers, Catie Munnings, Molly Taylor and Laia Sanz as pioneers, not forgetting the rest of the staff who will also be there.

Why Sardinia?

The Legacy Programs of Extreme E will focus primarily on responding to the recovery of the environment due to the devastating forest fires that occurred in the region. In addition, restoring and conserving seagrasses will be another initiative.

Moreover, leading scientists will offer a series of seminars intended to highlight the problems, but beyond that, to offer solutions regarding climate change. In fact, decarbonization will be part of the talks, where Enel X is a pioneer thanks to its chargers designed for electric vehicles.

The impact that motorsports has on people can go a long way towards a solid path to full electrification within the automotive sector, as the capability to see how sustainable vehicles perform under demanding conditions may convince many people to opt for them.

This generates one of many theories about how motorsports can benefit automakers. Precisely, that was one of the topics developed during the 2nd Green Racing Virtual Summit, where Massimo Bercella (CEO of Bercella SRL), Eric Morley (COO and Co-Founder of Blue C), Javier Alonso (Motorsports Director at QEV Technologies) and Nate Schroede (Director of Special Projects at Our Next Energy, Inc), held an interesting debate led excellently by Bill Beverley (Co-Founder and CEO of Evollectric).

Bercella is a leading Italian company for design, engineering, state-of-the-art solutions and manufacturing of racing ride parts and seats. They have produced over 1,500 chassis for various championships (Formula 2, Formula E, IndyCar, LeMans, among others).

Related content: GRN Summit: Extreme E, Pure ETCR, eSkootr and Enel X Chart The Future of Motorsports

“Over the past 5 years, we have evolved in electric racing by working with multiple carbon fiber parts for ABB FIA Formula E. Enabling light weight while providing a safe structure for the drivers competing in these championships is one of the objectives.”, said Massimo.

“We have been involved in motorsport for many years,” stated Eric Morley before providing his views on motorsport and the automotive industry.

“Electromobility and electric racing are the future. There is nothing that can survive and it’s not sustainable. We have to adapt to what the market and everyone wants,” said Javier Alonso, who has more than 25 years of experience in the motorsport sector and is convinced that we currently have a great opportunity to demonstrate that electrified racing is possible, with Formula E, Extreme E as an example.

How Motorsports Can Benefit Car Manufacturers

For Maximo Bercella, the future is electric. “They definitely have to pay attention to the motorsports sector for many reasons. They have the challenge to motivate themselves to be the best, to develop technologies.”

Furthermore, he also pointed out the example of Formula 1 and how carbon fiber parts were transferred into manufacturing cars. They are currently used on electric hypercars, a clear example of how it influences the automotive industry and its builders.

Why motorsports are so important?  “They try to make the best zero-emission cars, so if manufacturers didn’t have them, they wouldn’t be able to build a brand, and to generate communications around it,” says Morley.

“Motorsports have to be there. They are the future.”

Javier Alonso

From Alonso’s point of view, starting something new is complicated, using Formula E as an example, with hard times at the beginning, but after years of persistence, and above all, raising awareness, it is now a benchmark for sustainability.

For Nate Schroder, on the other hand, the off-track work of the brands is also important, using what Audi has done as a reference. “I’m very excited about how things have gone from the labs to practices.”

“Electrification gives you the opportunity to be relevant and to focus on progress for the future, and with that, comes a lot of opportunities,” commented Robin Shute concerning the outlook for manufacturers and how they benefit from motorsports. “You have to focus on where EVs are strong, use their strengths and take them into serial products.”
