The Hydrogen Roadmap plan will supply the city of Madrid a fleet of cabs powered by this green fuel as part of the transition to clean and sustainable energies, which will be in circulation from 2022, to reduce carbon emissions in the Spanish capital.
This was confirmed by the Professional Taxi Federation of Madrid (FPTM), along with David Perez, Transport and Infrastructure Counselor of the Madrid Community, asserting that it is an “ambitious and competitive” project, with 53 million euros destined as funds from the city towards sustainable mobility. Part of the project, however, will be financed with European funds, with an estimated investment of 100 million euros.
This fleet would exceed 1,000 hydrogen-powered cabs, and Madrid is not alone behind the project, as Toyota, Madrileña Red de Gas, Price Waterhouse and Grupo Ruiz are all behind supporting it to ensure a successful implementation, and promote switching to clean and efficient transport modes.

The initiative will be called Tax-As-Service and seeks to encourage cab drivers in Madrid to gradually change from fossil fuel to a more environmentally friendly one, with the purpose of reversing the effects of climate change, which must be tackled now to avoid greater problems.
Madrileña Red de Gas will be the company responsible for distributing hydrogen throughout the city using refueling stations. The energy supply networks are one of the biggest challenges towards sustainable change, because it is useless to have an environmentally friendly vehicle, but with limited options when it comes to replenish the energy.
